Now, this doesn’t mean that Routh can’t play Superman when a new film project finally gets off the ground. In fact, Routh is still very interested in playing the charecter.

“The term of the contract expired. But if they call me again, I’ll go back to the character without thinking twice,” Routh told Omelette during an interview on the Scott Pilgrim set.

What this does mean is, when and if Bryan Singer or Mark Millar whoever the hell actually ends up making a Superman movie in the next couple of years finally gets to the casting process and wants to cast Routh, a new contract will have to be written.

I really loved Routh as Superman and I think the dude himself is very cool. I hope that whenever we get a new Superman movie, it’ll be him in the tights.

Rumblings of a Superman reboot have been making the rounds for months now, causing everyone to wonder who would be behind the camera. Today, we may have our answer…

Who’s directing Superman?

It’s the big question on the minds of a lot of comic fans. After the mostly disappointing performance of Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns, a 150 minute love letter to Richard Donner’s 1978 original film, Warner has been dancing with the idea of a complete relauch of the character.

Then, a few months ago, it was revealed that comic scribe Mark Millar (Wanted, Ultimates, Superman: Red Son) had an idea for a Superman trilogy that he was trying to sell to Warner Bros. It would tell the story of Superman from his birth on Krypton, to his eventual death on Earth thousands of years in the future. Not only that, but Millar claimed to have a “big time action director” interested in his take on the project.

Today, a rumor making the rounds claims that not only is a Superman trilogy on the fast track at Warner, but they’ve chosen a director to bring Big Blue back to the big screen. Or should I say… directors?

The Wachowski Brothers are directing Superman.

Director James McTeigue (V For Vendetta) spilled the beans during an interview in Berlin to chat about the progress of his new film, the Wachowski produced Ninja Assassin. When asked what was next for him, he confirmed that he had signed on for second unit support of the Wachowski’s next film, Plastic Man, which is a script they’ve been trying to get produced since before The Matrix. But, the film has been delayed indefinitely due to Warner’s current shake-up in the DC movie department.

He then stated that Bryan Singer has refused to get behind a Superman reboot of any kind, leaving executives at WB with no choice but to turn elsewhere for a fresh creative direction.

The Wachowski Brothers have been approached by Warner Bros to helm a reboot of the Superman franchise as a trilogy. He said that they haven’t signed everything quite yet, but if they do, he will either move to second unit duties on that film, or be promoted to direct Plastic Man.

Bryan Singer, meanwhile, will be moving on to his remake of Logan’s Run that he’s been trying to get off the ground for a long time.

Is the Wachowski Superman trilogy and the Mark Millar Superman trilogy one in the same? Nothing is known for sure, but I for one, am excited at the prospect of the Wachowski Brothers directing Superman. I just hope they’re not writing the script.

If you were to ask any normal person they might laugh at you and say Clark Kent, and they may be right, however Superman is not any one thing for everyone. Everyone seems to have their own characteristics that make up their interpretation of the Man of Steel, and if there were a team of writers that reflected my own love of Superman, they would be Geoff Johns and Richard Donner.

Already famous as the director of the acclaimed Superman: The Movie Richard Donner has been a fan favorite in the Superman mythos for decades, and so his decision to work on Action Comics in 2006 was met with excitement. Even after the success of the original Superman movie, Donner was removed as direct for all the sequels, a decision that has always been a disappointment for many fans. Like the release of Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut in 2006, Superman Last Son allowed fans to get a glimpse of what could have been, and it was sweet.

The decision to team up with superstar writer Geoff Johns didn’t hurt either. Fresh off the heels of his popular limited series Infinite Crisis, Johns teamed his writing talents with Donner and their obvious love of the character to bring one of the freshest Superman stories in years. One of the themes of Infinite Crisis was to show that the DC Universe had become stale, and its characters were no longer the beacons of Truth, Justice and the American way they had once been. With Donner, Johns was able to craft a story that would bring Superman back and bring critical acclaim back to the book that started it all, Action Comics.

The story itself is nothing short of a summer blockbuster, worthy of Donner himself. Along with the Man of Steel their are appearances by Lex Luthor, Bizarro, General Zod, Ursa, Non, Metallo, Parasite, and Sarge Steel just to name a few. When a meteor show brings a young Kryptonian boy to Earth it means big things for Superman, but even bigger things for Clark Kent. Convinced that the boy is in danger from not only villains but the government alike, Clark and Lois decide to adopt the young Kryptonian, and Christopher Kent is born. Little do they know that his real parents are on their way and are determined to turn Clark’s world upside down.

When reading the story, I can’t help but be reminded of Superman The Movie, because there are so many similarities in how the characters are portrayed. Bringing back Zod, Ursa, and Non, characters heavily influenced by their appearance in Superman II, may have seemed risky, but it paid off. They were brought back in a very intriguing way, but it still made sense in the context of the story. Not only did we get to see the return of Zod, but we also saw the return of Mon-el. A friend of Clark’s who is trapped in the Phantom Zone.

One can not talk about this story without taking time to talk about the amazing work of Adam Kubert on pencils. There has been some debate about his involvement on the project since an illness caused the last two issues to be delayed. As a result the story took 19 months to come out in issues, but all I can say is that it was totally worth the wait. I especially love his treatment of Clark and Lois in the book. Lois has been portrayed by many artists over the years, however I really like how Adam handles her, she looks very sophisticated, but at the same time shows the kindness that defines her character. I just love how Clark is portrayed, he looks like a big country boy, but I can see that there is more to him in his eyes, and Superman looks fantastic. A good balance between big and muscular, while not looking obscenely big. Also in my opinion on of Adam’s biggest strengths his his backgrounds, you can see that he spends a great deal of time getting all the details in there.

There is another special feature in this series that makes it unique, chapter four is presented in 3-D. This may sound like a gimmick, and I’m sure it was to an extent, but its explained in the series. In this issue most of it takes place with in the Phantom Zone, and the 3-D glasses act like protection goggles, and give the Zone a nice look to it. It was a really awesome affect, and I hope if we ever travel into the Phantom Zone in a movie, that it is in 3-D as well.

For me this series is all about Superman and how he fits into our world. An outsider from the moment he crashes here as a baby, Clark finds and instant connection to Chris, the boy from Krypton. And even though Superman has saved the world who knows how many times, he is still seen as an alien by the government. No matter how many lives he saves or how many friends he makes, he will always be alone, and that is the tragedy of Superman.

At the end of the day what we have here is just a great Superman story from two of the men that know him best. As Scott and I have said I’m sure hundreds of times anything that Geoff Johns touches turns to gold, and Richard Donner is the man that brought Superman to the world back in 1978. Everyone has their own interpretation of who Superman is and who he should be. I’ve never seen my Superman, but this is about as close as anyone has ever gotten.

I do believe a man can fly.

A couple of months ago it seemed that the chances of a ninth season of Smallville were pretty slim, well all that seems to have changed. Michael Ausiello of Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Tom Welling is close to signing a deal to keep him on the show through a ninth season, the are close to a deal with only a few minor points left to iron out. An imporvement in quality of the show, as well as in ratings may have been the turning point in these negotians.

What does this mean for the proposed Martian Manhunter show?

With the way season eight has been going this is awesome news, and maybe they’ll go for ten seasons since they’re so close.

As I’m sure a lot of you know, the condition of the next Superman movie has been up in the air for nearly three years now. As of right now there are two teams who have a real shot at being the creative force behind the film, currently going under the moniker The Man of Steel. There’s Mark Millar and his mystery “action director” and Bryan Singer, who directed 2006’s Superman Returns. I have now chosen a side; Bryan Singer needs to direct another Superman movie

I made this decision as I was leaving a sold out screening of Valkyrie, Singer’s first directorial effort since Superman Returns. I don’t want this to be a review of Valkyrie, mostly because Will and I are probably going to talk about it on the next Geekeasy (Episode 7 for guys, we recorded episode 6 right before we went to go see the flick.) but I will say that I had a blast watching the film and it reminded me what a fantastic filmmaker Singer is. There are shots in this film-little tricks with the camera and whatnot- that could only have been done by the guy that made The Usual Suspects and X2:X Men United. Singer has this really interesting visual style and imagination that I forgot how much I admired until watching Valkyrie. Now I’m fully aware that Warner Bros. has officially stated that they want to “reboot” the Superman franchise a la The Incredible Hulk. I think this is a great idea, even though I admired the hell out of Superman Returns. The movie was weird love letter to Richard Donnor’s Superman and even though it the franchise back a few years, I’m glad Singer made the film that he wanted to make, if only because he now has it out of his system.

Look, Singer’s a smart guy. He knows that the popular consensus with Superman Returns was that it was long, boring and “artsy” (see, intelligent.) And when he says he wants to go Wrath of Kahn on the sequel, I believe him and I believe its what’s best for the franchise. What I don’t believe is good for the franchise is Mark Millar’s Lord of the Rings meets The Godfather saga. Don’t get me wrong, its a really cool concept….for a graphic novel. But if Warner Bros. thinks that Singer’s “Superman as Jesus” killed the franchise, wait ’till they get a load of “Superman as Michael Coreleone meets The Omega man in this epic three part saga that ends with the world dying.” And this whole “top secret action director” bothers me as well. When I think “action director,” I think Paul W.S. Anderson, Louis Leterrier and those other guys that make unambitious, hyper-edited gun fight-a-thons that come out in August. (I dug The Incredible Hulk, btw) I don’t want an “action director” to handle Superman, I want a “filmmaker” which Singer is and always has been. I want someone who knows how to excite an audience with thrills and chills, but not the expense off story and character.

I believe in second chances, even when it comes to billion-dollar industry like film. And I think that Singer deserves a second crack at a badass, epic Superman movie with Brandon Routh back in the costume that he was born to wear. To me, we as moviegoers shouldn’t have to choose between action-packed or deep. Look at Iron Man and The Dark Knight; guys, we can have both. And we know that Singer can deliver both, just look at X2. So as little as it matters, I’m letting my opinion known; I think Bryan Singer is the right man for the job. With him behind the camera, I can believe a man can fly.

Citing “actor availability” issues Executive Producer Darren Swimmer is saying that Smallville’s proposed ninth season may not happen. Since Lana Lang and Lex Luthor have already left the show than one must assume that this is all about Clark Kent and actor Tom Welling.

Its also being reported over at TVGuide that the climax of the show, Clark assuming the mantle of Superman may not even happen. Saying that issue with the main film series as a possible conflict. That is surprising since that really seems like that is the new direction of the show.

On the Sydney based talk show, Sunrise, director George Miller has announced that he is no longer attached to the Justice League: Mortal film in any capacity. Miller also confirmed that when the project does move forward it will most likely be recast because,”the studios seem to want bigger stars in their superhero movies now.”

Once again it seems that Warner Bros. and DC Comics, cannot seem to get their act together with any other franchises, excluding Batman.

UPDATE: Apparently this wasn’t true at all. Get the real story here.

Comic scribe Mark Millar was recently interviewed on G4. He talked about his current comics work (War Heroes, Kick Ass, etc.) as well as his proposed Superman reboot. He has apparently been in talks at Warner Bros. to actually go forward with it and it sounds like it could be awesome. He describes it as “a big three-picture Superman thing, like a Lord of the Rings epic, starting over from scratch again with a seven-hour Superman story. One to be released each year.”

Best Selling Novelist and Comic Scribe Brad Meltzer (The Zero Game, Identity Crisis) premieres the trailer for his newest novel, The Book of Lies, being released on September 2nd from Grand Central Publishing. Now, this wouldn’t normally be something I would post about, as I like to keep articles somewhat related to geek-culture, but in this case it actually fits the bill quite nicely. The book’s description:

In Chapter Four of the Bible, Cain kills Abel. It is the world’s most famous murder. But the Bible is silent about one key detail: the weapon Cain used to kill his brother. That weapon is still lost to history.

In 1932, Mitchell Siegel was killed by three gunshots to his chest. While mourning, his son dreamed of a bulletproof man and created the world’s greatest hero: Superman. And like Cain’s murder weapon, the gun used in this unsolved murder has never been found.

Until now.

Today in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Cal Harper comes face-to-face with his family’s greatest secret: his long-lost father, who’s been shot with a gun that traces back to Mitchell Siegel’s 1932 murder. But before Cal can ask a single question, he and his father are attacked by a ruthless killer tattooed with the anicent markings of Cain. And so begins the chase for the world’s first murder weapon.

What does Cain, history’s greatest villain, have to do with Superman, the world’s greatest hero? And what do two murders, committed thousands of years apart, have in common? This is the mystery at the heart of Brad Meltzer’s riveting and utterly intriguing new thriller.

The trailer itself seems like something from out of a conspiracy-theory documentary and features the likes of Joss Whedon, Brian K. Vaughan, and Damon Lindelof drawing a link between the murder of the biblical Abel and the murder of Jerry Siegel’s father.
