Simon Pegg, the cult film star who brought us Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz has an interesting piece of advice for those wanting to buy the DVD of his movie How to Lose Friends and Alienate People- Don’t.According to Pegg and the film’s director Robert B. Weide, the version of the film that’s on Region 1 (United States) DVD is not the version of the film they wanted to make (nor for that matter was the version that made it to theaters.) Here’s a quote from Weide;

“In any movie, there are a number of scenes that get cut in an effort to keep the film from running too long. Some are of little consequence, but others are important scenes that are very painful to lose. In this instance, there were a few scenes that I fought hard to keep, but eventually acquiesced with the knowledge that at least they’d be available on the DVD. Well, not so in the U.S,” says Weide. “Simon and I worked very hard to make sure the DVD would be packed with bonus material. The British distributors (Paramount) solicited our input and included all of the extras. Sadly, the American distributors (MGM/Fox) locked us out of the process and managed to leave off most of the bonus material.”

I’ve heard nothing but bad things about How To Lose Friends and Alienate People (Besides from Will that is) and it really sucks that they’re not letting a great comedic mind like Pegg make the kinds of movies he wants to make. I mean, Shaun and Fuzz were hits and they were totally the work of his (and Edgar Wright’s) imagination while this film and Run Fatboy Run bombed critically and commercially (at least in the States) and from what I’ve heard Run Fatboy Run suffered from similar neutering. Hey, Jack, is the Region 2 DVD any good?
