We are joined once again by John Pavlich from Sofadogs and Geekshow’s own Movie Night podcast. Scott Pilgrim is 23 years old, lives in a cold, unnamed Canadian town, plays bass in a band called Sex Bob-Omb and has a very cute 17-year-old Chinese-Canadian girlfriend, Knives Chau. His “precious little life” is amiably unstructured, and he drifts, happily unemployed, between band practice and time spent with Knives. His relationship with Knives is chaste—walks, chats and hugs—although Knives is getting bigger ideas. “We haven’t even held hands,” Scott explains. “It’s just nice, you know.” But then he starts having dreams about Ramona Flowers, a mysterious, equally cute and perfectly legal hipster chick on Rollerblades who delivers books for Amazon.ca. Ramona is anything but simple, and O’Malley’s tale of adorable slackers in love is transformed into a wildly magically manga–kung fu fantasy adventure. We meet the first of Ramona’s seven evil ex-boyfriends, Matthew Patel, who challenges Scott and his band to a supernatural martial arts duel right out of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. O’Malley has crafted a delightfully hybrid comics love story. It’s an alt-lit, rock ‘n’ roll graphic novel with wonderful manga-influenced drawing and a comically mystical plot that manages to capture both the genuine intimacies and serial dishonesties of young love.

Johnny Storm to Battle Michael Cera in “Pilgrim”

Edgar Wright continues his string of casting for the action/comedy Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World. Chris Evans, often the best part of the two Fantastic Four movies and pretty badass in Sunshine, has been cast as Lucas Lee, one of the evil ex-boyfriends that Michael Cera’s Scott Pilgrim must destroy in order to win the hand of Ramona (Mary Elizabeth Winstead.)

In the comics, Lee was a doucebag skateboarder/movie star and I think Evans will be hysterical in the role. So far, every bit of casting has been spot on and I’m really looking forward to seeing how Wright does with actors that aren’t part of his usual crew. To be honest, the only guy I’m worried about is Cera. Will he play the Scott Pilgrim in the comics or will he re-format the role to fit his standard comedic style? Hopefully we’ll find out before 2009 is over.

Scott Pilgrim Updates

Preproduction is moving right along on Edgar Wright’s new film, the adaptation of the Oni Press comic Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.

Keiran Culkin has been cast in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. He joins Michael Cera and Mary Elizabeth Winstead who have already been cast as Scott Pilgrim and the object of his affection Romona Flowers. Culkin plays Wallace Wells, Scott’s gay roommate who is the more responsible of the two, and is known for his pithy observations.

Also joining the cast is Aubrey Plaza, playing the obnoxious lead singer and guitarist of Scott’s band, Sex Bob-omb. Plaza is a comedian who will be making her big screen debut later this year with Judd Apatow’s Funny People and was recently cast in the untitled new series from The Office masterminds Greg Daniels and Mike Schur. The series is set in the office of Amy (Poehler), deputy chairman of the department of parks and recreations in Pawnee, Ind. Plaza will play April, an intern who shadows her.

Last Week, director Edgar Wright posted a set photo from the upcoming film on his myspace page. It looks to be the entrance to Scott Pilgrim and Wallace Wells’ apartment.

The series is about 23-year-old Canadian Scott Pilgrim, a slacker, hero, wannabe-rockstar, who is living in Toronto and playing bass in the band “Sex Bob-Omb.” He falls in love with American delivery girl Ramona V. Flowers, but must defeat her seven “evil exes” in order to date her.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is due in theaters later this year.
