Based on the comic series by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr, Kick-Ass is a superhero film like no other. Dave Lizewski, an average teenager and comic-book fanboy, decides to take his obsession as inspiration to become a real-life superhero. Only problem? He doesn’t have any powers. But when your name is Kick-Ass, who needs them?

Clash of the Titans – Theatrical Trailer

Born of a god but raised as a man, Perseus (Worthington) is helpless to save his family from Hades (Fiennes), vengeful god of the underworld. With nothing left to lose, Perseus volunteers to lead a dangerous mission to defeat Hades before he can seize power from Zeus (Neeson) and unleash hell on Earth. Leading a daring band of warriors, Perseus sets off on a perilous journey deep into forbidden worlds. Battling unholy demons and fearsome beasts, he will only survive if he can accept his power as a god, defy his fate and create his own destiny.

Defendor – Theatrical Trailer

Bruised and beaten, arm in a sling, neck in a brace, Arthur Poppington (Woody Harrelson) sits in front of court-appointed psychologist Ellen Park (Sandra Oh). After making her swear to secrecy, Poppington begins to tell the story of his secret life as “Defendor” – yes, that’s an “OR” – spelling is not one of his super powers. By day, Poppington directs traffic around road construction sites, but at night he dons a pair of black tights, a black jersey with a crude “D” duct-taped to his chest, and trawls the streets as his alter ago. As Defendor, Poppington engages in what he believes is a super heroic fight against crime in an attempt to fulfill his unrealized dream of capturing his archrival, Captain Industry – a gun trafficking crime lord who Poppington mistakenly believes is responsible for the death of his mother.  When coming to the aid of Katerina Debrofkowitz (Kat Dennings), an underage prostitute, Defendor tangles with her pimp, Chuck Dooney (Elias Koteas) – a crooked undercover cop. By doing so, Defendor bumbles his way into a criminal underworld, and the stage is set for a showdown with Captain Industry.

The Losers – Theatrical Trailer

An explosive tale of double cross and revenge, The Losers centers upon the members of an elite U.S. Special Forces unit sent into the Bolivian jungle on a search and destroy mission. The team–Clay, Jensen, Roque, Pooch and Cougar–find themselves the target of a lethal betrayal instigated from inside by a powerful enemy known only as Max. Presumed dead, the group makes plans to even the score when they’re joined by the mysterious Aisha, a beautiful operative with her own agenda. Working together, they must remain deep undercover while tracking the heavily-guarded Max, a ruthless man bent on embroiling the world in a new high-tech global war.

A Nightmare on Elm Street – Theatrical Trailer

Freddy Krueger  returns in A Nightmare on Elm Street, a contemporary re-imagining of the horror classic. A group of suburban teenagers share one common bond: they are all being stalked by Freddy Krueger, a horribly disfigured killer who hunts them in their dreams. As long as they stay awake, they can protect one another…but when they sleep, there is no escape.

The Last Airbender – Theatrical Trailer

Air, Water, Earth, Fire. Four nations tied by destiny when the Fire Nation launches a brutal war against the others. A century has passed with no hope in sight to change the path of this destruction. Caught between combat and courage, Aang discovers he is the lone Avatar with the power to manipulate all four elements. Aang teams with Katara, a Waterbender, and her brother Sokka, to restore balance to their war-torn world. Based on the hugely successful Nickelodeon animated TV series, the live-action feature film The Last Airbender is the opening chapter in Aang’s struggle to survive.

I realize we here at Geekshow haven’t really done much reporting on Kick-Ass, so allow me to reitterate the plot; the film is based on Mark Millar’s (Wanted, The Ultimates)comic book series about a geek who decides to become a masked crusader…and roundly gets his ass kicked. Aaron Johnson stars as the film’s title charecter (Yes, his superhero name is Kick-Ass.) and the film co-stars Christopher Mintz-Plasse as Red Mist, another wannabe crime-fighter; Chloe Moretz as Hit Girl, a bloodthirsty eleven year-old assassian; and Nicolas Cage as Big Daddy, Hit Girl’s father and boss.

The scene-stealing footage shown at the Con centered on Hit Girl brutally and efficiently taking out a roomful of grown men using a variey of swords and knives, ; inspiring a standing ovation from those in the screening. Vaugn is convinced that her performance as Hit Girl will turn Mortez into a star, telling SlashFilm “If we’re Star Wars, she’s our Han Solo.”

Kick-Ass was made independently and still lacks a distributor, but after the rousing feeback generated at the Con, I’ll be very surprised if the film isn’t bought by a Fox Searchlight-esque distributor.

He talked about his current comics work (War Heroes, Kick Ass, etc.) as well as his proposed Superman reboot. He has apparently been in talks at Warner Bros. to actually go forward with it and it sounds like it could be awesome. He describes it as “a big three-picture Superman thing, like a Lord of the Rings epic, starting over from scratch again with a seven-hour Superman story. One to be released each year.”
