Towards the end of today’s Avatar panel, director James Cameron announced plans to realese a special sneak preview of his 3D sci-fi opus in theatres for free for one day only. This marketing experiment is, Cameron hopes, a way of spreading good word of mouth for the film, set for a December realese.

J Michael Straczynski was hired by Warner Bros to pen a remake of Forbidden Planet back in October, and now it seems that James Cameron is eyeing the project as his follow-up to Avatar.

Loosely based on William Shakespeare’s The Tempest, the original saw a group of Earth scientists who are sent some 17 light years away to investigate what happened to a colony of settlers on Altair-4. They find a man with a secret and his daughter who somehow survived a hideous monster attack on their planet. Gene Roddenberry has noted that Fred Wilcox’s original 1956 sci-fi film was one of the inspirations for Star Trek.
