UPDATE: It was just reported that Marvel Studios is in final negotiations with Joss Whedon to helm The Avengers. Which means he’s essentially seconds from signing on.

Wow. I honestly didn’t think this was going to happen. I’m much more excited than I thought I’d be. What do you guys think?

Original Post:

Originally reported by IESB and then later confirmed by LA Times, Joss Whedon is Marvel Studios’ favorite pick for the director of The Avengers. Is this a geek dream come true? The only thing better (for me) would be a Whedon directed X-Men First Class, or if he got the reins of Marvel’s Runaways adaptation (which I guess he could even still do after The Avengers wrapped).

But it is important to note that the film will not be WRITTEN by Whedon, he would strictly be calling the shots behind the camera and nothing more. He’s only done this three times before to my recollection (two episodes of The Office and his upcoming episode of Glee), and never for a film. This would be an interesting experiment at the very least.

What do you think of the possibility of The Avengers being helmed by Joss Whedon? Let us know in the comments section below!

Marvel Studios has officially offered the role of Steve Rogers in Captain America to actor Chris Evans.

THR is reporting the offer, and I have mixed feelings about it. Is Evans the right choice for Steve Rogers, arguably the most important role in Marvel’s Avengers movie plan? I mean, at least he has charisma (which is more than I can say for that cardboard standee some refer to as Channing Tatum), and he’ll definitely be able to hold his own among the likes of Robert Downey Jr and Edward Norton, but is it the right kind of charisma? Steve Rogers needs to have that old soul out of time leader-y vibe, and while I’ve heard that Evans has proven that he isn’t always Fantastic Four’s Johnny Storm, can he really play Captain America?

But at the same time, he was probably the best choice of what was left (and since Marc Blucas never got an audition…). Plus, I’m just happy a decision has finally been made.

UPDATE: Chris Evans has accepted the role of Steve Rogers/Captain America in a nine picture deal with Marvel Studios. He is officially wielding the shield.

This leaves me with only one question: Who should play Cap’s teenage sidekick, Bucky Barnes? If he doesn’t get Spider-Man, I’d say Anton Yelchin.

What do you guys think? Let me know in the comments section below!

Been waiting patiently to find out who would be cast as Steve Rogers in Marvel’s The First Avenger: Captain America? Well, you’ll have to keep waiting… but the list is narrowed down to six actors. The list and pictures after the break.

There have been a lot of rumored casting going around lately, which can always be assumed to happen as a comic book film’s production begins to approach, but in the case of Captain America, most of those rumors didn’t seem entirely out of question (not counting the Will Smith rumor from a couple years ago…). From Chris Pine (Star Trek) to Jensen Ackles (Supernatural) to Ryan “Captain Awesome” McPartlin (Chuck), every rumor seemed to fit the role rather well. Now, its been revealed that Marvel Studios has their list of shield-wielding hopefulls:

John Krasinski (The Office, Leatherheads)

I love John Krasinski, I really do. I love Jim Halpert. I’m even pretty fond of Leatherheads, and can see the connection that the Marvel Studio execs are obviously making. But seriously, Captain America?! I’ve always said that if they ever wanted to make a 30-something Spider-Man flick, with Peter Parker as a high school teacher, Krasinski is their guy. But he’s just not right for Cap.

Chace Crawford (Gossip Girl)

Consistently the least interesting part of Gossip Girl (I know, I know “There’s interesting parts of Gossip Girl?!” If that’s your reaction, it should really put into perspective how yawn-inducing Crawford’s character Nate Archibald must be), I see it physically, but I don’t buy him as a leader. I’ve never seen him display the acting chops I would deem necessary for the role. Besides, the guy’s next movie is a remake of Footloose… a guy’s gotta eat but I really don’t want to see Cap teaching a town to dance.

Michael Cassidy (Smallville, The OC)

On The OC, Michael Cassidy played Zach Stevens, one of the “new kids” introduced onto the show in season two (and then subsequently written off by the end of the season). His character was kind of a dumb but likable, “aw shucks” kind of a guy, but again, I just don’t get it. Sure, if he bulked up and squared that jaw, I could see him in the role physically, but his voice isn’t demanding and leader-y enough for me. He went on to play the new editor of the Daily Planet on Smallville’s seventh season, but I never bought him as the boss. Every time he gave orders to Chloe or Lois, it felt weird, unnatural, and totally took me out of it. If he can’t convince me he can run a newspaper, how the hell would he be able to carry the presence necessary for Captain America?

Mike Vogel (Cloverfield, 2003’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre)

Better. Closer. Warmer. He’s definitely got a look close enough to Steve Rogers (Only complaint would be that he’s just a bit too… “pretty”). The problem however is that while I’ve seen him in both movies listed above, I can barely remember him in either. Does that mean that I just didn’t find his performances that memorable? That’s not good when he’s supposed to be playing one of the most recognizable characters in comic history. Of course this curse could also be a blessing, it would definitely give him an “unknown” air to him, which would allow him to really dive headfirst into the role. Besides, once he plays Cap, people will definitely remember him. Consider Vogel my tentative number 2.

Patrick Flueger (The 4400)

I’ve never watched The 4400, and looking over his IMDB, I don’t think I’m familiar with anything he’s done at all. He’s got the look however, but I can’t give my approval unless I see something he’s done. But I guarantee you this: If Patrick Flueger gets the job, The 4400 will instantly be added to my netflix que.

Scott Porter (Friday Night Lights, Caprica)

My number 1 choice by a mile, Scott Porter would be an awesome Captain America. I haven’t had a chance to catch Caprica yet, but from the little bit of Friday Night Lights I’ve seen so far, I think he’d be great. He’s got troop-rallying leadership down. He’s absolutely got the all-american midwest vibe going for him. He should be a shoe-in for the role. Of course, this almost guarantees he won’t get it, but lets hope for the best.

Well, that’s what I think. What about you guys? Let us know in the comments section!

Marvel Studios recently semi-officially announced that they’re pushing back most of their upcoming films by a year or so. In fact, the only Marvel movies who still have their old release date are Wolverine and Iron Man 2. Thor will now hit theaters June 17th, 2011, instead of 2010 and the big ol’ Avengers movie will now come out May 4th, 2012. The First Avenger: Captain America has also been pushed back, but only by a couple of months; from May 6th, to July 22nd of 2011.

I have to say I’m mostly relieved by this. For a while It looked like it was going to take a miracle to pull of so many action-packed blockbusters on such a short string of time. Now Marvel’s got some breathing room.

Oh, they also announced that Spiderman 4 will be released on May 6th, 2o11, Cap’s old release date.

After the recent addition of director Joe Johnston, it was announced today that The Chronicles of Narnia film series scribes Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely are in final negotiations to script Marvel Studios’ The First Avenger: Captain America.

Considering the film is set for release on May 6th 2011 and will lead directly into The Avengers just two months later on July 15th, Johnston is going to have to cast Steve Rogers/Captain America ASAP, but he’ll need a script first. Marvel Studios really should have hired writers months ago. I can’t imagine that Markus and McFeely will have much time to work on this. I just hope that they have it planned out, and the quality of the film won’t suffer.

Fingers crossed.

The director for Marvel Studios’ The First Avenger: Captain America has been hired, and his name is Joe Johnston.

Johnston has directed such films as Honey I Shrunk the Kids, Jumanji, October Sky, and the upcoming The Wolfman starring Benicio Del Toro. But none of those films are reasons to get excited about Johnston directing Captain America. No, there’s only one movie in his filmography that has completely sold me on his ability to direct Cap’s big screen debut, and now I can’t imagine anyone better. Keep Reading…

It was a little film called The Rocketeer.

MTV is reporting the rumor that Will Smith has been offered the role of Captain America in Marvel Studios’ The First Avenger: Captain America and the subsequent film, The Avengers.

First of all let me say what I know a lot of you are probably thinking… “WHAAAT?!”

Now here’s the part where you guys get a little freaked out:

I almost believe this.

But probably not the way you might think. I think Will Smith was in fact offered the role of Captain America, but I don’t think he’ll be playing Steve Rogers. There was a character by the name of Isaiah Bradley who is known in the Marvel Universe as the “Black Captain America”. He later becomes the grandfather of Patriot, a Young Avenger.

I wonder if this is all a lot of craziness over something as simple as a glorified cameo. A possible set-up for a Young Avengers film?

But of course, Marvel’s never been shy about changing up the race and/or gender of it’s characters. So Big Willie might in fact be playing Steve Rogers after all.

Or it could all be BS. Who really knows?

= ?
