Oh my goodness, cangratulations Ben! *Snort* I think you guys should livecast the wedding. LOL, I'm kidding.

And goshy, I got mentioned twice in the podcast. I feel all special now. :P

I'm still leary of new Trek, but I'm gonna give it the benefit of the doubt and just hope the trailer was a by-product of just bad marketing. Trek is very hard to market, most people view it as the ultimate nerd thing to this day. Spiderman or Superman might be able to be marketed to anyone, but Trek still persists as being the truest "nerd" thing. It's one of the few geeky things I like that even to this day when I say I like it people look at you like a loser and go "you're not one of THOSE people, are you?" Even my own mother doesn't understand Trekies and often denigrates against them when I was growing up and would turn to Trek. And I can't help but wonder if the trailer was a product of them trying to de-nerdify it. Not unlike that marketing campaign a few years ago to try and make Zema cool (obvs didn't work- I still wouldn't show up to a party with a Zima) Like I said on the other thread, I like the design and look of it. I LOVE that they kept the original series uniforms and I think Vulcan's design is neat. Simon Pegg is probs gonna steal the show, and was probably the only one on set thrilled to be there, being the big nerd that he is.

I do agree- original Trek is very same to original Who. The sets were made out of cardboard, they were produced on a shoe-string- but gosh darnet the stories were there. They are two shows which, to this day, the stories are some of the best science-fiction ever written.

First, I want to say “Congratulations to Ben” That’s very cool. I may not know you personally, but I have gotten to know you “professionally,” (that’s in quotes, because technically professionals get paid) and I think you’re a great person: smart, loyal, funny, and obviously cool. She’s lucky; there’s no question. I’ll be sad when and how this affects the show.

(That was supposed to be more endearing and less creepy...oh well)

Second, I wanted to address the “Hero” series for Showtime. As a gay man, I have watched Queer as Folk (The L-Word was a little too Lesbian for me). I think what we (as a community) liked about it was that it took “us” seriously. We weren’t the “token” character or the funny friend, but the main event. It was a show for us, by us, and about us. There has never been a show before or since that has treated the subject matter with such care.

However,I don’t see how Showtime can have “Hero” be about a superhero who happens to be gay without dealing with all the “gay” stuff. The reason that I say that is because our society is not yet in a place where it’s ready to accept that. You can have a superhero that happens to be: a woman, African American, hispanic, etc, but not gay. It’s still in the taboo category. Just look a proposition 8 in California. Many forms of discrimination are legal in the majority of US states. (Jobs, housing, hate crimes, marriage)

That being said, I can’t wait to see if it can be pulled off. I would LOVE a show (any *good* show) about characters that happen to be gay. Where it's treated as almost an afterthought, and no big deal. As far as I’m concerned the Brits did it well with Captain Jack on Doctor Who/Torchwood, so the door’s ajar. I don’t tend to watch a show “because” it’s gay or has a gay character, unless it’s done well.

I also agree that the superhero/family stuff should be more of the focus.

Dave

PS it’s pronounced păl'ə-mŏn

Glad you guys feel the same way as I about the Star Trek trailer. I think its pretty cool how Abrams is doing is own thing with the franchise. The way I see it, we've had eleven movies of "Old Trek." Why not try something fresh?

I also didn't care for some of the editing in Quantum but really loved the movie as a whole.

During your discussion on "Quantum of Solace" I was thinking that Quantum is a front name for Spectre and that Spectre is the organization that M and company doesn't know about

I have to agree with your sentiments on animation. I wish that we could get more animated movies here that aren't necessarily stories for kids. I love all the Disney stuff and the Pixar movies, but I would love to have more variety hit the mainstream and be successful.

Of course I am an animator myself, so I'd better have a love for animation. Otherwise I'd be in the wrong career.
