Two Geeks Episode 71 – Reach Out and Touch Scott
Monday, July 21st, 2008
In this episode Scott and Ben record in person! We’re also joined by Geekin’ host Randy McKinney. News involved secret Warner/DC meetings, a possibly abstract Robocop, King Arthur trading in his sword for a gun, and much more. Trailers this week were for Watchmen, The Spirit, Terminator: Salvation, and the new Iron Man cartoon series. Finally we review Hellboy 2: The Golden Army. This episode was apparently having some sort of technical difficulties that couldn’t be helped. There is a constant static buzz from about 5mins in until the end. It only gets really bad twice and luckily they are only in 30-60sec patches. If you can make your way through it, this was a really fun episode. Stay tuned for our Dark Knight review very soon!

“Who’s the target audience for a dueling ballet dancer movie?”
This guy!
FIX THE DAMN MIC!!!
I’m in for a dueling ballet movie too. :)
24 did place over a fairly long period of time. In fact I think between season 3 and 4 there was a 5 yr fast forward in the story.
Great news that Fanboys is getting the original storyline. i was really bummed when I heard it was going to be changed. Maybe the damn movie will finally ocme out now.
Graet episode despite the audio problems.
It’s a shame there is a bit of static in this episode, as it was a great episode overall. Still, I’ve seen a bunch of discussion over the various Dark Knight trailers. This is where you can hear us discussing it. I’ll be interested to see who’s thoughts mesh.
That episode title is ironic, becuase that buzzing you kept hearing was me trying to communicate wth you guys through white noise. (I’m a ghost, btw)
Yeah, Unfortunately our Dark Knight review has the similar audio problem. It sounds like some sort of electrical problem. Not really sure.
Scientist- Keanu, are you a couch right now?
Keanu- My body is.
By the way, about the Watchmen trailer. I don’t know that I was ever a naysayer of this film but I wasn’t too enthusiastic about the trailer.
I had to watch it several times to make up my mind. First of all the last shot in the trailer of Dr. Manahattan and Laurie on mars stopped my heart. It was amazing to see that scene brought to life in the theater.
Secondly, I wasn’t sure about the Pumpkins song at first but now I think it totally makes the trailer. Using a song from the Batman and Robin soundtrack was genius. That kind of slick commentary perfectly compliments the sensibility of the book.
The trailer goes out of it’s way show us only scenes that are recognizable from the book. (except for Nite Owl in the snow. I didn’t recognize that at all) I appreciate Snyders commitment to the book but seriously, how well is this gonna work? I notice we didn’t see any minute men or anything like that.
I think this movie is going to play kind of like a greatest hits reel from the comic. Comedian’s death->Dr. Manhattan’s origin->Rorshark’s arrest->Manahattan and Laurie on Mars->Prison break. All brought together by some shakey connective tissue. I wouldn’t be surprised to find the movie is brought in at just over two hours.
I wonder how they’ll handle the end.
A few predictions: I think they’re going to water down the ending. Not just the violence either. You’re not allowed to get away with moral ambiguity in Hollywood. Viedt won’t just get away with it.
Comedian raping Silk Spectre and then they fall in love? If they keep that I will eat my shoe (I’m wearing shoes made out of ham. I might eat them anyways).
Also from the trailer it looks like they’re making Nite Owl into a less compromised more heroic character.
I overall like what I’ve seen and heard but I just don’t think you can tell this story in Hollywood.
Finally, I’ve given it a lot of thought. I can already visual the apologies for this but I’m not on board; I hate the slow mo flying kick from Nite Owl.
Watchmen Trailer: I’m kinda with Rusty on this one. It *looks* amazing. He definitely got the look right. It’s just the story that I’m on the worry about. I simply put think the movie will be dumbed down. I also don’t think ‘normal’ people understand that- you don’t have to agree with the statement of a story to like it or think it’s good. I really think that it will be heavily toned down. We’ll see I guess… On the positive note- the trailer is such a huge hit that right now the Watchmen trade is on backorder- they’re gonna have to go into another printing of it. I guess everyone who went to see Dark Knight last week now wants to read the book. I’m correct in assuming Alan Moore gets some money for that right? In royalties? (Comic book royalty/copy write stuff can get complicated) so at least he’s profiting off this movie in a roundabout way.
BTW, has anyone seen this animated panel thing that DC put out? It’s… interesting to say the least. My only complaint is the voice work. I wish DC coulda casted a different voice for the characters. Because when it gets to the Silk Spector… it really is jarring to hear a guy’s voice coming from her. Kinda like in an audio book.
T4- Okay. I am a huge Terminator nerd. More the first movie than the others. But still, a member of this fan base. Friggin’ awesome trailer. I think the reason some fans were pissy was actually because Ain’t It Cool posted a synopsis of a reported trailer for the movie that got screened early that supposedly had a lot more footage and was supposedly cooler than this. It’s stupid, but I think that’s why. Don’t care. Loved the trailer, and because of that and Christian Bale (who has been the love of my life since his early days in Empire of the Sun, Newsies, and Swing Kids) and the no Arnold thing I am officially stoked for the movie. I’ll say it: I have hope. T3 was a huge disapointment but I think this movie is exactly the next locgical step in where the franchise should go. I was wary of McG at first (I can rant for hours about how disguisting Charlie’s Angels is) but I’ve been reading his production blog and honestly… I think he actually has respect for the concept- and I think he might know what he’s doing. Dunno… we’ll see I guess. But, oh man… can’t wait for more footage from this movie.
I read a report from the Watchmen panel at ComicCon, and it sounds like the footage they showed went over well. I believe it was more of a showreel rather than any single scene, but it sounds like there was a lot more stuff than was shown in the trailer.
I have finished reading Watchmen for the first time now. I plan on reading it through again very soon. Anyway, I went back to watch the trailer again to see what I thought of it now that I know what is going on. I agree with you guys in that he has the “look” down pat. Some of the clips in the trailer look like they were lifted straight from the pages.
After finishing Watchmen, I also had my doubts about pulling off some parts of the story in the movie, especially the ending. However, I went back and read an interview with Zack Snyder from Comic Con that I skipped over in fear of spoilers. They specifically asked him about the ending. He kind of dances around the answer a little bit, but I feel just a *little* bit better about the movie now.
From http://www.chud.com:
Q: You’ve gone a long way towards making fans happy with the trailer. 85% of fan’s fears seem to be assuaged by the trailer, but what they keep asking me about is the ending. Can you let them know that they have nothing to worry about?
A: I’ll say this about the ending. Patrick hinted at it in that article [Entertainment Weekly]. I was thinking, What is Watchmen? I believe the crux of the movie is that it offers a moral choice. That is Watchmen. Let’s just say that, without getting too spoilerish, a certain character in the movie survives that. Makes a moral choice that we would consider, or what an audience might consider questionable, but on paper you could make an argument for. I have to say, you pose that to studio… you tell the studio that this guy who kills millions of people, he’s going to be okay at the end. That’s tough. It’s not like Lex Luthor ends up on an island. I’m saying this guy might be right. That’s the movie, that’s the fun. Look, I love Iron Man. I think the movie is awesome, I think Robert is amazing in the movie. I walked out of the movie and said, ‘That was great! Let’s get a beer.’ I’ve always said that you walk out of Watchmen and say ‘What’s up?’ Or you get a beer and [mimes a drunken argument].
