Why the push for big Mega-Mixels in Cell Phones ?

I struggle to understand why cell phone manufacturers keep putting bigger and bigger photo sensors into mobile phones. The latest are up to 8 and 12 MP ! Why ? With the tiny lens on cell phones the images will suffer. I'd rather them focus on better internet browsers, better operating systems and interfaces. Any other views ?

Personally i don't quite understand the fascination with the camera in phone thing. I only use it for mms, and those pictures don't need anywhere near that quality.

It's nice to be able to take a quick picture on the run. And as long as they can do it cheap I'm not opposed to bigger and better cameras. However, I rarely ever use my camera, so it's not a big sticking poing for me. I'd actually rather have an LED flash on the phone than to get a slightly better camera. JMO. Cool

The camera on my phone is a nice afterthought, but it doesn’t get much use. If they want to put better cameras in that I don’t have to pay an arm and a leg for, fine by me.

I find I take more pictures with my phone than I do my camera. My phone's camera is a 3.2 and has a flash, but I hate the pics taken with the flash on. I guess that even though my camera is loads better than my phone, I use the phone because I always have it on me unlike the camera. If I'm going somewhere important of course I take my camera.

I don't really see the sense in the larger mega pixels though. How often do you need that anyway? The average person doesn't need more than – what – 6 maybe? An 8×10 pic printed only is 3-4 I think.

Don't get me wrong, I do like my camera on my phone. In fact I've taken over 500+ shots with my phone. Still, it can never replace my 'proper' camera. The shots I take with my old 3 MP camera are still loads better than with my 5MP phone.

The issue I have is that even with an 8MP camera phone it still would be poor quality.

My phone is great for casual, spur of the moment shots and I will continue to use it. If I want a good photo, I'll take my camera.

You don't always have your normal camera on you. You almost always have your cellphone on you. Maybe they should start putting cellphones in cameras instead? Wink

Personally, I've always said as long as I dial 7 numbers and get another person than my phone's done it's job.

Nicer cameras are selling points plain and simple. Like zoom lenses on cameras- they're nice and all, but not really important. *shrug*

Good zoom lenses are important. But the difference between 7x and 8x isn't. :)

They are, and I love a good zoom lens as much as the next camera nerd. I was just referring to how sales people at stores like to use the zoom lens as they're biggest selling point when dealing with a customer that doesn't really know cameras.

Now, the question was why put higher megapixel cameras in cell phones? I agree, there is no need.

Now, if the question was why put better cameras in cell phones? That I want.

Like what was said earlier, I always have my cell phone with me. My iPhone has Facebook, so I can just upload directly to Facebook, or Flickr, or Photobucket or Picasa… wherever.

I can't do that with a camera. Even if I could, that's 2 pieces of technology that I don't want to carry around.

It's like this for me: I take pictures with my cell phone, but I take movies with my digital camera, and my camcorder sits on the shelf.

I almost never use the camera on my phone. While it seems like a nice feature if you want to take a photo on the fly I think I spent too much time around photographers to ever turn to my phone as my primary camera.
