My latest favorite is the Watchmen soundtrack, which I was just nuts about.

Who else thought the Coraline soundtrack was off the chain?

This is really wo questions: best score and best soundtrack.  I tend to think in terms of the best collection of songs that fit the theme of a movie, rather than the best score.

My best score choices:

Pan's Labyrinth

LoTR

Gladiator

For a Few Dollars More

Hero

Glory

Star Wars

Jaws

The Day the Earth Stood Still (original)

I have a hard time picking out a soundtrack made of songs from movies that aren't a musical.  However, Scorsese and Tarantino usually have excellent soundtracks in their movies.

I am much more into movie scores, so I'll just mention a bunch of those as they come to mind…

Lord of the Rings

Star Wars

Jaws

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Blade Runner

The Natural

Chariots of Fire

Gladiator

Braveheart

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves

This is my awesome signature…please don’t step on it.

Any season of Supernatural (Yes I know not a movie but come on)

Good Will Hunting

Resident Evil (Marilyn Manson FTW)

He Got Game (big PE fan)

Score of Batman Begins and Dark Knight

Matrix

Killing conversation, one thread at a time.

Completey off the top of my head:

Even though the movies were kinda lame I loved the following soundtracks:

200 Cigarettes (just a great 80's collection. I love Blondie…)

City of Angels (HATE the movie, love all the music though)

I am Sam (mixed bag, but I love a handful of the Beatles covers)

And for movies that rock:

The Commitments (great covers)

Moulin Rouge

Back to the Future

Wings of Desire (sorry, it's the hipster I try to bash in me)

Rock and Roll High School (HOW can you hate a movie that the Ramones are in… HOW? And all the other music rocks.)

As for score, no shock here, I love the music for Terminator the best. I put the score on the other night and when the love theme came on my roomate poked her head out of her room and was all “what is this? It's awesome.” I told her and she was all, “really?!”

lol, when the soundtrack list appeared I was prepared to download the songs… then I realized I had all the songs already by virtue of being the nerd that stopped buying new music in 1998.

The best movie soundtrack would definately have to be Across the Universe.
