I think this topic os probably geared more towards what movies you have watched lately, but you can certainly mention teleision shows if you would like (unless we[ve already got specific threads for it outside of this one).

So, what have you been watching lately?

A couple weekends ago, I watched Repo! The Genetic Opera, and I really liked it.  It was certainly a different sort of beast.  The entire movie is sung with no spoken dialogue like a regular musical.  I rented the movie because of Anthony Stewart Head, and he didn't disappoint.  That guy has got some serious pipes!  Anyway, the music is very good (it even has some actual opera in it), and the visuals are very well done.

Rating: A-

This past weekend, I watched Burn After Reading.  The Coen brothers have an interesting filmography, and this one is no exception.  Every single character is absurdly stupid in their own unique way.  Brad Pitt, Frances McDormand, and George Clooney were particularly amusing, and JK Simmons has a coupl brief but great appearances.  If you like other movies from the Coen brothers, you should certainly give this one a look.

Let's see…

I recently netflix-ed Wristcutters: A Love Story and found it kinda eh.

Did a marathon of Alien and Aliens on a lark over the weekend with a friend and a few beers- still awesome movies… maybe one day they'll make a third, here's to hoping. ;)

Just started watching Space: Above and Beyond on vague memories of liking it back in the day- so far it seems a little bleh, but maybe it's because I'm spoiled on BSG now or it possibly might just be a bad pilot.

I'm in the middle of a Trancers marathon right now. Always cracks me up how Helen Hunt “mysteriously” disapears in the middle of the franchise. (IE Her career started taking off after the 3rd one.) Trancers is such a stupidly awesome 80's B movie.

Oh! Last night before going to bed I watched a pretty awesome teen sex comedy from the 70's I rented as an effort to see every movie Michael Beihn was in. It was called Coach- actually a fairly interesting and genuinely funny movie. Other than the whole student/teacher hooking up and falling in love creepy “it's the 70's it's okay now” thing it actually had a really realistic vibe to it. There's a scene where the kinda nerdy guy (who's a real looking nerdy guy, not a Revenge of the Nerds type) is asking this girl out. And, her friends are behind her laughing and trying to be cool, his friends are behind him snickering and cajoling him forward and I just thought, “wow, I must have seen that scene a thousand times in HS.” *Shrug* Kinda interseting.

They did make a third Alien movie, and it's even really good.  Sure, Alien3 doesn't reach the heights of the first two fims, but I've never understood why people hate it so much.  I've always found it to be a fun film to watch.

Sorry, I've had this debate too many times. Suffice it to say I just don't care for Alien3 and nothing anyone will say will convince me otherwise. I'm also not a fan of really any of Fincher's work so there's that too. It's just become a running gag with my friend that we deny the existence of Alien3.

Alien: Resurrection though is only enjoyable as more of a science experiment than an actual movie. It was like, someone said here Steph: here's a franchise you love, a director you love, and a writer you love- but none of the three belong with each other and/or the franchise- here's that movie. Such a weird, weird combination…

Last night I was lucky enough to catch The Room on adult swim.

It is a pretty special movie. And I mean that both as a compliment and as a comparisson to retards.

The film is definitely beyond your average “so bad it's good” movie. The enjoyment is not in making fun of it. It's in the fact that you can't believe it exists while you're watching it. I hear Robert Wiseau's accent is Austrian but I think he's foreign to the planet earth.

I give it four stars out of four. I can honestly say it hit me harder than many actually good films.

Rusty- I might have to check that one out. Those kind of movies are usually my favorite. The kind that go beyond even 'so bad it's good'- it's how I feel about Ed Wood's opuses. I won't link it up to here because I don't want to get into trouble, but has anyone ever been to Cinemageddon? It's my favorite source for the weird and hard to obtain.

I agree, Alien 4 is a weird, weird combination….

I loved Alien3 before I even knew who David Fincher was.  Now that I know all the behind the scenes troubles that happened during the production of Alien3, I think I appreciate the movie even more.

I will say that I love David Fincher's movies (especially Seven and Zodiac), so maybe something about his aesthetic just clicks with me.

My wife and I went to see “Milk” a couple weeks ago. It was playing in an old theatre that is being renovated. I went more for my wife and the atmosphere of the theatre, but ended up liking the movie. I despise Sean Penn as a person and never thought much of him as an actor, but he was good in the movie. The cast as a hole were great and the story was a good. I like when storys are base on true. I find myself googling the subject to fing out how much was true. I googled Madame de Pompadour after watching “The Girl in the fireplace”. I also caught on Flix the other night “Cruel Intentions 1800’s” or I guess it was called “Valmont” it had Annette Benning. It was good. I thought there was another movie Cruel Intentions was based on with John Malkovich, but I’m not sure what it was called.

I hope you're joking.

Olorindic- Your thinking of Dangerous Liaisons, which is based on the French book of the same name. There is a version with Malkovich but there have been many adaptations through the years.
