I know there's a couple posters here who haven't read the book. I'm curious about the perspective of the un-initiated.
What about this film looks interesting to you? What are you expecting from it?

I have read the book, but only after I had seen the theatrical trailer for the movie. The trailer looked so interesting that I decided to check out the source material before seeing it, and I'm glad that I did. I think I will have a better appreciation for the story than I would have going in blind.
I'm not sure what I'm expecting from the movie. I expect it to look very nice visually as the trailers have all looked amazing from a visual perspective. Zack Snyder seems to be a big fan of the material, and a few of the interviews I've seen with him sound promising as to what he wanted to accomplish with the movie. Some of the early reviews seem to indicate good things and some don't, but the places that I generally trust have been extremely positive.
I think the movie will be at least a good experience, especially for fans of comic book movies, but I'm not really expecting it to catch on with the general public so much. Personally, I can't wait to see it, and I am expecting to love it. Hopefully I won't be disappointed.

It's odd to me that Watchmen was turned into a film with such a huge commercial push. I mean, they can monkey with story and change stuff around but at it's core Watchmen doesn't have a lot of mainstream appeal.
It seems like the movie has found itself at the center of this geek storm but that's not really what it is.
I wonder if the movie will have the balls to commit the moral ambiguity of the novel. I really, really doubt it.

Oh good, I thought there might be spoiler in here.
I have not read the novel… yet. I kept meaning to, but I put it off. Then I went to get it and they didn't have it at the book store I usually go to. So I looked online and found 100 or so at the Chapters in the city closest to me. I have a hard time with some comics (I'm weird I guess, all the dialog seems all over the place), and even though it's a GN I thought it would be the same. The reason I decided to read it is because an author I like gave it rave reviews. I would have read it with or without the movie after reading his comments. I definitely would have seen the movie regardless as well. I have heard lots about the Watchmen GN, and I was interested to see a comic book type movie with enough edge that it's rated R (here it's 18A). Also, I know some people didn't care for Zack Snyder's 300, but I absolutely loved it. It was beautiful (my sisters and girl friends think I'm a little off for my taste in some things, lol). Mind you I didn't read the novel so that could have changed my opinion.

I am so unbelievabily excited for this movie. For a long time I was one of those “unfilmable” naysayers. But then at comic-con a few weeks back I got to watch the first 18 mins and me, my friend, and her sister each turned to one another afterwards and said at the same time “I want to watch the rest of it!”
I'm very rarely one of those people who goes to an adaptation looking for a carbon copy. Mostly I'm happy with a film if they take the intent and spirit of the work. And that's what I'm mostly hoping for with this movie.
And if this film does end up sucking (*knock on wood*) I will at least be glad that if not for it so many people who otherwise would never have have read the book have. My roomate is in the middle of it right now and it is the first time she's ever read a comic book, and a girl I work with just finished it and she loved it. Is in fact going to be borrowing a bunch of Alan Moore's other stuff from me soon and even asked me to reccomend some other author's work. So, regardless of how this movie turns out it makes me so happy just knowing that on our main floor at my store we have a table dedicated to Watchmen and that it's selling well. And maybe when people are done with it they'll start going to the comic store for other things.

One thing that interests me is that it seems like a lot of critics have an axe to grind with with this film.
Two examples

Notice that both take shots at the medium as well as the percieved audience.

Most of the “geeky” sources I go to for movie reviews (like Devin's review at Chud, for example) seem to have loved it so far, so I fully expect that I will love it as well. I'm sure I'll find some things I don't like, but I expect the overall film to be great.

Hey I messed up, I meant to put a [massive] spoiler warning on those links, especially the second. I’m actually sort of horrified by their absence.
If some smart admin could fix my error that’d be great.

And Polygon, I’m surprised you call Devin “geeky”. Haven’t you read his anti-geek manifesto?

I had better refrain from reading those reviews then. I am not yet finished with Watchmen. I will be by the release of the movie (I was going to go on friday), but now my bff is coming for the weekend and she has no interest in seeing it. I can't find anybody to go with me actually, not even my hubby. So when my mom and I went to the movies a couple weeks ago I tried to convince her by telling her that Papa Winchester is in it and showing her the posters, etc… lol. I'm not sure if she's sold though. I think it might be kind of dark for her taste.

Devin may think that he's not geeky, but he's kidding himself. Chud as a whole is fairly geeky, just a different, somewhat cynical flavor of geekiness.

Chiming in late on this, but I have to say, I am thoroughly excited for this film. I haven't read the source material. Not for lack of want, just time and money. When I did finally get the money to get the trade, the stores were sold out.
For those of you who wonder about it's mainstream appeal, last weekend I was getting ready to leave my parents house when a Watchmen trailer came on. My 69 year old mother and 74 year old aunt said, “I don't know what that is all about, but I have to see it.” Needless to say, I'll be going for a second viewing with them this weekend, as I can't miss the midnight showing tonight. I've also had gads of co-workers, not usually interested in the genre, coming to my office to ask about it. I think there is some appeal there. Not from the “Sex and the City” crowd, but some appeal.

Unfortunately, I have this thing on Friday called “work” so I won't be going to a midnight screening. I'll just have to catch it Friday night or sometime Saturday.

I remember reading that. It was pretty amusing, and certainly classic Devin.
So Devin's not a fanboy, but he does say that he is a “movie nerd”.
Here's Devin's (somewhat) infamous review of Rob Zombie's Halloween in which he gave the movie a “Fuck You Out of 10″:

I too have this thing called work on Friday. They will just deal with a Zombie WonderJenn. :)
Actually my employers know by now that when blockbuster movie season hits, expect me to be drinking copious amounts of coffee and Mountain Dew on Friday.
