I just saw that hollywood will be remaking my favorite movie of all time “Let the right one in” 2 years after it’s original release. I’m so pissed about this! What’s the point of remaking a perfect movie three years after it’s release.(They even started BEFORE it’ original release” Don’t tell me it’s to improve it or anything like that. There’s only one reason: to cash in on other peoples creativity. Instead of just distributing the original movie properly but no they have to rape it like only hollywood can. Why are americans afraid of subtitles! I don’t get it! What if Europe would make a new version of the dark knight one year after release and all of europe would not even know about the original. How will you get Americans to see forreign films if only shitty remakes make it to their screens. The original director of LTROI said “Remakes should be made of movies that aren’t very good, that gives you the chance to fix whatever has gone wrong. I’m very proud of my movie and think it’s great, but the Americans might be of an other opinion. The saddest thing for me would be to see that beautiful story made into something mainstream.” and “I don’t like to whine, but of course – if you’d spent years on painting a picture, you’d hate to hear buzz about a copy even before your vernissage!”
Please see this movie before it comes out in America. I’ve heard the guy from f”cking cloverfield will do it(wtf). Please excuse me for some spelling mistakes but English isn’t my language.

I'm of two minds on holywood remakes of recent foreign films. I don't think remakes / adaptations / sequels ever hurt the original. I don't like much of Zack Snyder's Watchmen but when I open up Alan Moore I completely forget it. I'm not angery that it was made, it's completely irrelevent to me.

But I also do agree that it's disrespectful to the original material. It's almost like they're trying to version it out. Also it's boring and unimaginative. I hate reading about the endless parade of remakes and movies about cereal box characters; often taking up the time of many of our best directors; Spielberg's is working on his remake of OldBoy, Michael Hanke remade his own film in English because he decide the original wasn't condescending to the right audience, and of course Scorcese won an oscar for his remake of Infernal Affairs. And I guess Peter Berg's next film is Battle Ship: The Motion Picture. However I am really looking forward to Werner Herzog's remake of Bad Leutentant.

It's unfortunate that this amount of effort isn't being spent giving the original films their due. Most American's probably don't live anywhere near a theater that played Let The Right One In or Oldboy. I'm still waiting for Chan Wook Park's new film to come to my state.

It's easy to adopt a condescending attitude toward the American film goer. But that attitude is naive and misdirected. Most people the world over don't spend their time keeping abreast of word cinema, so we're hardly unique. What was the last Makhmalbaf film you took in at the theater my Belgian friend? My Danish associate Henrik loves to go on and on about terrible films American's make and how stupid the audiences are. But the truth is that the number one film in Denmark this summer was Transformers. Those “big dumb american films” are actually the most truly international cinema there is.

Also, I have to admit there are quite a few of these recent foreign remakes that I've loved. Verbinski's the Ring, Scorcese's Departed, Crowe's Vanilla Sky, Nolan's Insomnia, The Office US etc…

I agree 100%. I don’t blame the American people but the studio’s and the evolution of hollywood the last 15 years and their unwillingness to take any risks. Great movies mean originallity wich means new idees wich means risks. For instance I saw a quote from the producer of the “let the right one in” remake: “we will make it very accessible to a wider audience”.That quote made me want to cry. Excpect a pg-13 at least. But you are right when you say that it won’t hurt the original but I just hate that so many people will only see the remake not knowing about the original. On the other hand you could say that those movie’s limited releases is the only thing keeping these movies so good. As soon as a large amount of money is involved it starts going downhill. Thank you for responding, I appreciate your opinion. I followed your discussion on transformers 2 and I couldn’t agree more. Words like “popcornflick” or sentences like “I was’t really expecting much” make me sick. thank you for replying!BTW have you seen “let the right one in”? If yes what did you think?

The images and mood of Let The Right One In stay with me but it doesn't seem like I appreciated the film as much as some others.

I have not seen since it was in theaters here, almost a year ago. It's hard for me to make time to rewatch movies but it's on the top of my list.

Have you seen either version of Funny Games? And what did you think of Haneke's idea to remake his own film in English?

I personally have nothing against North American remakes of foreign films, but I usually have no use for them either, except for a few like The Ring, The departed and Funny Games. My problem with the movies is that North American Film makers don't 'get' foreign films and don't have the faith in the audiences to enjoy them for what they are.  The first thing they seem to do is try to tailor the movies for what they think an American audience wants, never realizing that the charm of the movie is that its not generic and formulaic. Since hollywood is already making movies for everyone it would be nice if they took a chance on a foreign remake without changing it.

For example last year they remade 'My Sassy Girl', the original Korean movie may be my favorite movie. The American version came out as a run of the mill watered down and very generic rom-com. The charm to both main characters was completly taken out by choice, seemingly to fit the stereotype for rom-com fans. All of the characters quirks that were off putting or confusing were erased and any plot twists were very heavy handedly forshadowed almost embarrasingly. the result was a boring predicable movie that went to video for the most part. It felt like they don't trust viewers to be able to think for themselves even though it worked in the original.

I liked was 'funny Games'. While it was just a remake I loved the preformances in it. The idea of remaking his own movie was interesting and while it is a waste to make it the same way twice I still have a soft spot for it. And I loved The departed because Scorsese Made the story his own. In that case he took a good thriller and added a ton of content to it, its hard to compare the two but I actually prefer the Departed.

I have a love for foreign movies and this year I've been watching asian movies almost exclusively. (I have a good asian DVD dealer near my house). To be honest most of the domestic movies I've seen here this year are boring in comparison.

@I'm still waiting for Chan Wook Park's new film to come to my state.

'Thirst' was great. Park Chan-Wook is one of my favorite directors,  especially 'JSA', 'I'm a Cyborg, but thats ok'. and the movie crush and blush which he wrote.

I’ve only seen the remake and liked it. I used to think a remake was safest with the owner of the original vision but that was before Indiana Jones and star wars. I know, not remakes but still they showed me that even the maker of the best movie isn’t a garantie for quality in the continuation of that vision.
