Because I really enjoy Nathan Fillion I watched the first episode of Castle tonight.

Generally, I dislike episodic shows and I also dislike police procedurals.

But I must say I enjoyed the show enough to watch the first four episodes in one sitting.  Nathan Fillion is at his finest.  The dialogue is clever, and his foil does a good job.  The show is predictable from a plot standpoint, but that doesn't matter much since it's about the banter and the unrequited sexual tension (”UST”) ala Bones.  It can also be touching at times.  I like the supporting cast as well.

Overall, I'd say it is my favorite new show – and I'm shocked that it is since I hate the genre.

What do others think?

I was just talking to my roomate about procedurals now. Is it the new thing for them all to have that “quirk” so to speak?

I watched the first episode- Fillion was the only reason I'll keep watching it. He has a bit of that Bruce Campbell charm in him that no matter what the material is he can still make the viewing enjoyable.

By “quirk” you mean the UST?  I hear UST is a buzz phrase.  The concept originated in the mellow days of Tracey and Hepburn, and some of the highest rated procedurals have used it (Moonlighting, Remington Steele, X-Files, and currently Bones).  All feature a uptight female and a cavalier male.

The problem is sustaining the UST.  They have to move the relationship forward or the audience gets frustrated, but once they hook up the UST is imploded.  So often they hook up in dreams or under some extreme circumstances where it can be an embarrassment later.  These shows tend to sparkle for 2-3 years, then get dull – IMHO.

Fillion has that rouge charm that keeps the show moving.  I started to like Stanic as well.  The first 4 episodes were pretty good, the fifth was just so so…

I watched the pilot episode of Castle, and I really enjoyed it, but I haven't watched anything after that.  I'll probably catch up online sometime if I can find the time.

This is my awesome signature…please don’t step on it.

i enjoy it, but i think it might be just because of nathan fillion. The show is not boring yet but honestly, how far can they go on this premise alone? Hope they innovate and keep me hooked

Right now Nathan Fillion is the only reason i’ll keep watching. It has some good humor in it but it will be a lower priority for I am too far behind on other shows. It has potential so I won’t give up on it yet.
