I’d like to introduce you guys to the new forums. Very simple to get into, you just need a single account on Geekshow.us, and then you are ready to post. If you are logged in at the top of the screen, then you are ready to go! Head over to the forums, and get us going.

Most topics won't be linked to the forums. So the discussion for individual posts will usually still take place on the front page.

My main problem with the discussion on the front page, is that it doesn’t generate any long discussions. You can’t see when there are new replies, so as soon as a few newer articles show up, they kill whatever chance there was for anything more than a few comments.
Randy, is there any way to change that? To add something that shows you when there are new comments to old articles?

You can see the 10 most recent comments. You can also subscribe to the RSS feed of a post to see when new comments are posted. I'm not sure what other options there would be. Do have a specific idea in mind?
I totally get that it's not the best solution in the world, but I'm not aware of much better options that are out there. I would be interested in looking for something though, if I am pointed in the right direction. Show me a site that does it better…

I have examples for sites, but they’re not in English…
Basically, the idea is to have a list of old articles on the main page, that have new comments that you haven’t seen (the site keeps track of this for each user). As soon as you enter the article, it disappears from the list, until there is another new reply.
To keep this list from being too long, in the sites I know:
a. This list only includes articles that you have entered, and that have new comments since the last time you entered. Articles that you never read don’t go into the list.
b. The list shows you no more than 10 articles, but remembers more than that. so when you click on one of them, it disappears and article number 11 with new comments comes in as number 10.
c. Only put older articles (which have been pushed out of the main page) into the list. Articles that are still on the main page have a number at their top – just like this site writes that a certain article has 83 comments, these sites write that there are 83 comments, of which 45 are new for this user.
I don’t know how hard this is to do, but I know several sites that do it.

If there is a Wordpress plugin for this, it would be as hard as installing it and turning it on. If there isn't, I might as well build us a new hotel building to have GeekshowCon '09 at, and fly everyone in for free. Because both of them would be about the same difficulty for me. :)
But now that I have an idea for what is out there, I'll take a look around and see if I can find anything.

BTW, I also have the option to link forum posts to comments. So that's another option to keep the forums from killing the comments. The only issue is that I don't think it works in reverse. And I have yet to test out the feature. So that may be turned on in a day or two after I get a chance to test it out.

Yay for the forums!!! I missed the forums so much since that was where I usually posted. The comments are cool, but then there are times you just want to chat in general about a topic and now we can.

Have you seen the main menu bar lately? It's a little crowded.
