Book of the Month
Kick-Ass Premiere HCThe greatest super hero comic of all-time is finally here! Have you ever wanted to be a super hero? Dreamed of donning a mask and just heading outside to some kick-ass? Well, this is the book for you--the comic that starts where other super hero books draw the line. KICK-ASS is realistic super heroes taken to the next level. Miss out and you're an idiot!
I loved Call of Duty 4. But I loved it because it had nothing to do with World War 2. While I find the war to be interesting, I don’t think it makes a good video game setting. So CoD4 was the first CoD game I ever enjoyed. While I tried the CoD:WaW beta, I didn’t get into it very much. It had some nice improvements, sure. However, those improvements just made it feel like a patched CoD4 with a setting and weapons that I didn’t care for.
I’m also not a huge World of Warcraft fan. Not because I dislike the payment schedule like many of you. In fact, I think that’s fine. When you get 100+ hours in per month, plenty of free content, and servers that allow you to play with all your friends online, I don’t see how you can complain about $14 a month. Heck, I spend $60 on each new video game, and I generally don’t get that much play time in. However, if you can’t get the 100+ hours per month in, as is my case, then the $14 a month isn’t really worth it. So yeah, if I had the time for it, I’d be there. But I don’t, so this isn’t an issue for me.
I also have to mention that I’m not a big fan of stand alone albums for the music games. I don’t care if it’s one of my favorite bands, I will not pay $40 for one of their albums. Greatest hits or not, that’s too much. If they were going to do it this way, they should have eliminated the ability to play the game on it’s own using that disc, and just made it a purely import and play copy. I’d really love to have a large number of those games on my copy of Rock Band 2. But not for that price.
However, I am looking forward to Banjo Kazooie Nuts & Bolts this week. I won’t be playing it until about Christmas time, given the time I need for Gears 2 and Left4Dead next week. But I still definitely want to get to it before the end of the year. Plus, coming with the original game on XBLA is pretty big for me, since I never played it when it came out, and it’s pretty popular amongst gamers. Unfortunately, I’m not the type of gamer that can usually find enjoyment out of old games. I don’t like to re-watch many movies, and I don’t like to play old games. I’m just weird like that.
I usually don’t like “realistic” shooters very much. That goes double for a shooter set in WWII. That’s why I haven’t even tried Call of Duty 4 yet. Despite getting tons of praise, I would much rather play other types of games. I plan on playing it at some point, but it’s not on the top of my list.
I am going out to get Mirror’s Edge after work today. I’ll be sure to let you guys know what I think of it. I loved the demo, so I’m sure I’ll have a lot of fun with it. Also, my wife is getting me Nuts & Bolts for my birthday. I probably won’t be getting it until my actual birthday in a couple weeks, but I know it’s coming. That will give me plenty of time to put into Mirror’s Edge.
After that, I’ll probably get Prince of Persia in early December, but that will be it for my video game purchases for a while.
I was able to play a couple chapters of Mirror’s Edge last night, and it was awesome. So far, I agree with most of the reviews….when you are running through the environment and pulling off some crazy moves, the game is great. However, when you have to fight someone, it isn’t as fluid as I’d like it to be. However, it isn’t annoying enough to really make a difference for me. Being chased (or chasing someone else!) is a ton of fun and a completely different feel than you get in most games where you are meant to take things head on and shoot everything. Mirror’s Edge is all about finding a path around or away from the enemies, unless there’s no other option.
I haven’t tried the time trials yet, but I fully expect that part of the game to take up most of my time.
I’ve heard that Mirror’s Edge is INCREDIBLY short. Like 5 hours, max. Let me know about that.
Also, I started play Banjo Kazooie (The N64 version) yesterday. I ordered my Nuts & Bolts copy through Amazon, so I don’t have the new game yet. However, since I never got to play the original, I played through the first world. I’m not a big fan of playing old games, so I have to say that I was REALLY impressed, and found it to be a lot of fun. Lots of collecting, moves to remember, puzzles, etc. I highly recommend it if you haven’t played it yet. I got it for free, so of course that’s great for me. Normally it’s $15 though, so check out the demo when it releases to non-preorders.
I also got news tonight that I (finally) got into the Public Preview of the NXE. Only 6 days early, but I’ll take it. So that comes down the pipes tomorrow.
Just played the Mirror’s Edge demo and I have to say, that altough this isn’t normally my kind of game, I’m pretty impressed. Will probably wait till the price drops to get it though.
Played Lego Batman demo and had a lot of fun.
Also played Tomb Raider: Underworld demo and it reminds me of Legend (which I like). Looks great and was fun, but the damn camera is still pretty bad. Looks frustrating, but I’ll eventually get it because I have a weakness for Lara.
For those that have played the demo, thoughts?
Next up for me is Guitar Hero: World Tour, but I’m so involved in Rock Band 2 that I’m in no hurry.
good times
A few words about Mirror’s Edge: Subway. Train. Holy. Crap.
I think a lot of the extra play time for Mirror’s Edge will come in the time trial mode. I have to say that it is completely addicting, and it is pretty cool to be able to race against “ghosts” of anyone who has set a time. Seriously, you can pick anyone on the leader board and race their ghost. It let’s you see fancy ways of getting through the environment. There are definitely more shortcuts than you think. I spent a bunch of time last night trying to put good runs together in a few of the time trial levels (there are a LOT of different areas to unlock).
I’ve been hearing about 6-8 hours for the story mode. I’ll let you guys know how long it takes me once I finish it. The game would be a lot shorter if I didn’t die so often. The game gets fairly brutal in places, especially if you are trying to figure out exactly where to go when there are a bunch of cops shooting at you. However, every single level so far has had an insanely cool moment or two in it.
I don’t think the game is for everybody, but I’m having a blast with it.
I also bought Nuts & Bolts when I got Mirror’s Edge, but I haven’t played it yet (had fun with the demo though). Technically, Nuts & Bolts is for my birthday, so I’ll probably hold off on it for a couple weeks or so. I plan on downloading the original game since I’ve never played it before. If I really like it, I’ll probably get the sequel, Banjo Tooie, as well. I believe it is supposed to come out fairly soon as well.
