Thursday, January 29th, 2009
Welcome to the first spin-off to the wildly popular Trailer Geek articles, the Gaming Edition. This is like the CSI:Miami of the Trailer Geek universe. This week we have the latest trailers for Final Fantasy XIII, Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena, Street Fighter IV, and House of the Dead Overkill.
Final Fantasy XIII The latest entry in this long-running RPG series is coming to the PS3 and XBox 360. Set in a futuristic city, the game will feature turn-based battles and stunning visuals. Unfortunately Final Fantasy XIII won’t be released in the U.S. until sometime in 2010, so you’ve still got a long time to wait.
Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena Riddick returns in this remake/continuation of Escape From Butcher Bay on the original XBox. Dark Athena will feature improved graphics and AI, an expanded single-player campaign, and brand new multiplayer modes. The game is expected to release this April.
Street Fighter IV The latest entry in this popular series of fighting games comes to consoles in mid-February. Returning fighters include Ken, Ryu, Chun-Li, Guile, and M. Bison, among others.
House of the Dead: Overkill This rail-shooter adopts a tongue-in-cheek grindhouse presentation style. You’ll be able to use your Wii remote to kill hordes of zombies on February 10th.
Batman: Arkham Asylum An upcoming game for the Playstation 3, Xbox 360, and PC based on DC Comics’ Batman. It is being developed by Rocksteady Studios and will be published by Eidos Interactive in conjunction with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and DC Comics. It is based on the long-running comic book mythos, as opposed to most other Batman games which are adaptations of the character in other media besides the source material. Features Mark Hamill as The Joker, and Kevin Conroy as Batman.

Book of the Month
Y The Last Man Vol. 5In this final Deluxe Edition hardcover collecting Y #49-60, Yorick and Agent 355 prepare for their ultimate quest to reunite the last man with his lost love, while the person, people or thing behind the disaster that wiped out half of humanity is revealed. Then, Yorick Brown's long journey through an Earth populated only by women comes to its dramatic, unexpected conclusion.
“They came for brains, you’ll give them….bullets.”
LOL! :D
The setting of Final fantasy XIII is about one of the most visually appealing I’ve seen. So I’m definitely starting to look forward to that. The combat also looks pretty fun, but we’ll have to see how it turns out. A long road ahead.
Im hopping ff XIII will get me back into final fanstasy games (and rpg’s in general), the older I get the less intrested I seem to be in them.
I wasnt a fan of butcher bay, but I have always liked riddick as a character so I might check it out… see what the reviews say about the gameplay first.
I really like the new street fighters look, the mix of old and new really appeals to me. Iv always sucked at 2d fighters, but still, i’ll play it in the arcade for sure.
Ahhh house of the dead…. my old drunken late night quilty pleasure
Love the grindhouse style trailer for HOTD
AND SWEET MOTHER OF ALL THAT IS…has anybody else seen the full trailer for the batman: Arkham Asylum game? its beautiful.
Yep, I sent a message to Polygon to tell him to add it. But it’s late, so he probably won’t. Maybe I’ll just go add it myself :P
There. Added. :)
Yeah, I didn’t check my email until this morning. Last night I was too busy watching a few episodes of Jericho after watching Supernatural.
If you was watching Jericho, then I can forgive you :)
I’ve only got two episodes from Jericho’s 1st season left to watch. :D
That trailer for Batman Arkham Asylum is pretty sweet. Having Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy’s voices in the game will make it that much better.
Pure awesome!!!
Yeah but I have to admit its weird having the joker be anybody but Ledger after the dark knight, haha specially when he calls batman “my dear dilusional dark knight” and claimed he was having too much fun to want to escape.
I thought the Joker sounded like they took the interpretation from the Animated Series and then ran it through a Dark Knight blender. The result is a weird amalgamation that is much darker sounding than the cartoon but more cartoony than DK. I thought that it matched the visuals very well.
Squee!!! I can’t wait for FF!! I am so happy I can buy a 360 and play it. Now I don’t have to be the oddball out with my sony product while all my friends have 360’s.
I’ve soured on JRPGs as time has gone on, but I will give FFXIII some serious consideration when it comes out. As long as the story is as good as the visuals then I will probably buy it.
Street fighter 4 looks great, but fighting games have limited appeal since I left college and dodn’t have opponents readily at my disposal.
