‘Avatar’ Trailer Released
Friday, August 21st, 2009The countdown has ended, and the Avatar “teaser” trailer has been released. It’s over 2 minutes long, but is composed mostly of random scenes. Still, it gives a solid look at the style of the movie from James Cameron. Check it out after the break.

Scott Pilgrim Vol. 1-6From writer/artist Bryan Lee O'Malley comes the story of Scott Pilgrim, the 23 year old slacker who's precious little life is turned upside down when he meets the girl of his dreams (literally), Ramona Flowers, and discovers that in order to be with her, he must fight and destroy her seven evil ex boyfriends. The visuals are impressive, however did any else get that feeling of Ewoks vs. Imperial Troopers? Let’s hope the story is half as good as the effects. (crosses fingers)
Nope. I didn’t get that vibe at all.
I feel the same about the story though. All the attention that Avatar gets is on the CG, but I’m just hoping that James Cameron can still tell a great story. If Avatar’s story and characters are even half as good as Aliens, it should be a pretty good time.
Oh yeah, I was going to say that I got a different vibe from the trailer. The color palette and the jungle locations in the second half of the trailer (hell, even some of the interiors at the beginning) made me think “this is kind of like Halo” for some reason. I think it’s mostly because the saturated color palettes for both are very similar.
The air vehicles are a lot like the Pelicans from Halo’s USMC as well.
I was much more impressed with this trailer after watching it on one of our large HD monitors here at work. Despite some of the compositing work on the FX being obviously unfinished, I was still very impressed with the composition of shots. I also really dug the design of the different creatures towards the end of the trailer.
I really don’t understand the Cameron hype. The terminator movies were great but that’s about it. I personally think that titanic is one of the most overrated movies of all time. I also can’t understand why he casted Joel Moore, that guy from “dodgeball” and “the hottie and the nottie”(worst hour of my life, I should have known better). Don’t get me wrong, I’m looking forward to this but I just don’t understand the hype.
The hype is James cameron directed Terminator, Aliens, and Terminator 2 (…and True Lies to a lesser extent) before he did Titanic. And like it or hate it, Titanic was a pretty big technical achievement for its day. Then, Cameron decided to stop making narrative feature films for a while.
So Avatar is not only James Cameron’s return to narrative movies after a long absence, but it is also his return to sci-fi. Aliens and the Cameron Terminator movies are bona fide classics, and people are excited to see his return to theater screens, myself included.
Terminator is (IMO) the best movie ever made. Terminator 2 is an equal and worthy sequel if ever there was one. There was also Aliens, The Abyss, and True Lies- all some extremely excellent movies. All movies that have changed and/or influenced everyone in the business. All his movies have been successful and they all tell very good stories well. Let’s not forget all the scripts of great action classics he worked on in the 80’s (Point Break and Rambo 2 to name a few). The shoot out at Tech Noir in Terminator? NO ONE shot an action sequence like that before Cameron did it- truly a brilliant piece of filming. Yes, I’m an uber fan of his but that is WHY I am.
THAT’S where his hype comes from. If there is anyone on this planet who deserves every bit of hype he’s got: it’s Cameron. It’s amazing to me how many people have forgotten this: he has never made a truly bad, awful, steaming pile of crap (because even the haters have to admit Titanic was not the absolute crappiest).
And I actually enjoy Titanic (though I know it’s not cool to say) as some of the best history porn that there has ever been. I think it might be another ten years though before all this backlash dies down enough for people to be able to watch it honestly again. I’m not saying anyone’s hate of the movie is wrong or not valid but I wish people would just watch it through honest eyes, forget the damn song, forget the army of 13 year old girls (who despite what you may think honestly liked the story NOT Leonardo) and the gazillion dollars. There is more than that that made that film #1 for 15 weeks. There’s something to a movie that makes it resonate so well with so many different people that I find terribly fascinating.
I don’t know who this Moore guy is… but seriously, he’s, like, 6th billed. I don’t think he’s in the movie much. And you never now, the guy could be good but stuck in crap movie until now.
Joel Moore is mostly famous for producing some terrible “cult” horror movies including Hatchet and Spiral. He was also in Art School Confidential. He’s a decent character actor from what I’ve seen. It’s not his fault someone paid to see The Hottie & The Nottie. Most of us would just know better.
He appears in one shot in the trailer.
Ok, srry totally forgot about aliens and the abyss. Should have went to imdb before commenting. Didn’t mean to offend. the trailer looks awesome that’s a fact.
love it, saw clips at movie-con, love it even more.
Also, I never saw Titanic, I refuse to be part of the biggest money maker of all time.
Don’t worry- I was 14 when it came out and saw it 9 times in the theater. I more than made up for your lack of a ticket.
Wasn’t the average number of times each person watched it like 10? Kind of hard to “cover” for another person when the movie made so much because people watched a ton.
I haven’t seen it either yet and it’s not on my to see list.
I’v seen it all…

just never in one sitting…

or in order.
While it looks like a mostly CG movie, it is beautifull.
Is it wrong the part that made me happiest was when I seen the depressed intern from bones was the guy pushing his chair?
I think that’s Joel Moore.
Yeah your right, I noticed that when i googled his name after posting it…. that’ll teach me to post before doing my homework.
Joel Moore was great in Grandma’s Boy.
I think the CG is good, but it was also distracting. I’d like to know more about the story. Dialog would be nice. I’m looking forward to seeing more…
Hopefully we’ll learn more about the story when we see the movie.
Honestly, if the story is good than I could give two figs about the CG. I’m a little worried Cameron’s gone the Lucas route and got too excitable over his new toys that he neglected the story, but I refuse to
From everything I’ve read it’s Dances With Wolves in space. I don’t know how I feel about that, but we’ll see.
LOL, Ten bucks says Sam Worthington nobly dies at the end of the movie.
After reading the synopsis and seeing the trailer, I get a “Dancing with Wolves” in space feel. Graphics look amazing.
