Tennant out as Doctor
Thursday, October 30th, 2008
Well, we knew it was coming, didn’t we? Still, that doesn’t really help it sting any less. BBC is reporting that Tennant will be departing Doctor Who after the upcoming Christmas Special and 4 more specials next season. In 2010, we will be seeing a new doctor. But who? (No pun intended.) BBC has a list of odds for various replacement candidates. In that list, they include Paterson Joseph, David Morrisey, James Nesbitt, and John Simm. What is your own personal Who shortlist?

hmm, interesting. Well, David Morissey is the new doctor in “The New Doctor” at christmas so I doubt he’d be the next replacement, but who knows. I want Bill Nighy, dude would be an amazing Doctor.
After listing to him do it for Big Finish I’d love it to be David Warner but maybe at 67 he’s a little too old so for me it has to be Paterson Joseph he would make a brilliant Doctor. and lets hope it isn’t going to be Russell Tovey
Paterson Joseph – Not a bad choice.
David Morrisey – Not crazy about the idea
John Simm – Wait… wasn’t he The Master? I’m confused…
James Nesbitt – My absolute favorite pick. I will be campaigning for him until the new doctor is announced.
Yeah, I’m not sure where they pulled that list from. But Simm was indeed the Master.
Personally, I want Patrick Stewart or Hugh Laurie as the Doctor. But we all know those two aren’t going to happen. I kind of want to know how they will go about bringing in the new Doctor and the companion. Will the companion come before or after the new Doctor? Will the new Doctor be brought in by Davies or Moffat?
Patrick Stewart isn’t going to be the Doctor, but he is going to be appearing in one of the 2009 specials as a Time Lord known as the Meddling Monk. He apparently befriended Tennant on stage while they were both in Hamlet recently. My guess? The Meddling Monk story will be the final special and Tennant will regenerate there.
Hugh Laurie is doing House at the moment, but I would be head over heels if they somehow got him to be the 12th or 13th Doctor. He would be amazing.
I’d assume for dramatic purposes, he’ll end up getting his new companion in one of the specials and regenerate with them in tow. If he was alone, he wouldn’t have anyone to share that moment with. I think Davies will introduce him in a similar way to how he intro’d Tennant (ie. At the very end of an episode for a few seconds), but Moffat will be the one to really sell him to the audience.
Randy, you need to watch Moffat’s Jekyll series that starred James Nesbitt. It’s only six episodes and it convinced me over a year ago, that he would be the best choice to take up the role after Tennant. I think he could bring a darker take to the role that would match what seems to be Moffat’s goal on the series. He said that he always remember Doctor Who scaring him, and that his goal would be to scare a new generation of children. Nesbitt would be great for that.
The only snag in your campaign for James Nesbitt is that he’s apparently said in the past that he is not interested in the role.
Bill Nighy would be really really cool. It would be a nice change from the young dashing Doctor. You know what else would be cool? if Tennant reincarnated into a female. Does this go against Time Lord law? Can they change sexes? That would be such a crazy twist.
I wouldn’t be opposed toa female Timelord. In fact, I liked Jenny quite a bit. However, I’m kind of attached to having the Doctor have SOME similar qualities. Make him a female would be a bit too far in my opinion. I’m not against the first Black doctor though, if he still had enough similarities to connect him to the mythos.
I haven’t seen Jekyll yet, but I do like the Nesbitt look, at least. Paterson Joseph was in Jekyll as well, wasn’t he? The discussions I’ve seen on him so far rip on his abilities to use a believable dialect cover. But that shouldn’t be a problem with this role…
I’d hate to see a female time lord, not that I’m sexist or anything, it’s just the doctor in every incarnation has been a man, that’s just how it is, sorry. Now someone I forgot to mention earlier but would make an amazing doctor is Chiwetel Ejiofor (Serenity, Children of Men), the man has acting down to a science and has taken on many different roles, he would rock it as the doctor.
Dude, I’m a big Chiwetel Ejiofor fan but he’s getting way too many juicy movie roles to do a TV show, even one as iconic as Doctor Who. But I agree he would rock that role. I dunno…I’m kinda infatuated with my female Doctor idea, I may have to write a fan fic. lol.
Speaking of Jenny, she would make a great companion. It would bring a different dynamic to the show. Instead of the sexual chemistry angle we’d get the father showing his daughter the ropes of being a hero angle.
If the Doctor were to be made female, then I think the companion should be male.
But yeah, I’d rather have a male Doctor.
Can you imagine Hugh Laurie as The Doctor? man that’d be awesome. I’d almost give up House for that. :)
God I just had a scary thought…Female Doctor AND Companion Captain Jack
It’d be much the same as a male Doctor and Captain Jack. He is Omnisexual….
It actually works better I think, chemistry wise, for male Doctor and Jack since… the whole John Barrowman’s gay thing and all… not that he doesn’t have chemistry with anything that moves… he could have chemistry with a door… okay no I’m just justifying my slashy ways…
You know would make a fantastic Doctor? Eddie Izzard.
