New Vampire Show on CW
Sunday, February 8th, 2009
With the recent Vampire craze sweeping the nation, its time for The CW to get in on the action, with another novel adaptaion.
Despite the fact that The WB canceled Angel just a few years ago, their new network is ready to bring a new Vampire show back to the air waves. This time with “Vampire Diaries” a series of novels written by L.J. Smith.
Originally published in 1993 — which, as the CW took pains to note, was years before Stephenie Meyer launched her Twilight book franchise — Vampire Diaries revolves around a young woman who’s torn between two vampire brothers — one good, one evil — who are battling for her soul, and the souls of her pals, family and the small town where they live.
The CW has reunited with Dawson’s Creek scribe Kevin Williamson, who last produced Hidden Palms for the network.
“Vampire Diaries” comes from Alloy Entertainment, the same shingle whose past book series led to the CW’s series Gossip Girl and Privileged.

Excuse me while I mourn the Vampire genre…
Really? This actually sounds pretty interesting. Kevin Willaimson has done really cool things with the horror genre.
Seriously? “I know what you did last summer” was pretty bad, Scream was lackluster after the first one and Dawson’s Creek got consistently worse and overdramatic. None of this makes me feel any better about the fact that not only is Kevin Williamson behind it, but yet another awful vampire book series is being made into a tv show and/or movie.
I think, and could be wrong, that all those things that went downhill, went downhill b/c Williamson stop being a big part of those projects.
That is 100% correct until around five years ago or so. He hasn’t done anything good for a long time.
*GASP* Say what you will about Kevin Williamson but L. Smith wrote some of the trashiest, awesome-est teen books in the 90’s. Over-dramatic, everyone drop dead gorgeous (though she refrains from reminding you every few seconds) and to the naive innosence of a 12 year old pretty hot. No, they’re not Shakespeare but they ARE NOT EVEN REMOTELY THE SAME AS TWILIGHT. L. Smith novels don’t pretend to be anything that they aren’t, and the character’s motivations are always justified. I could talk for hours on how awesome she is.
It really does pain me that most of her recent success is based off of Twilight and that hordes of 13 year old’s will just claim that these books (and show) are just a rip off of Twilight.
*I* for one look forward to this only because it’s about damn time L. Smith got some respect, all her books back in print, and the right to write more.
Also, her Nightworld novels are her best ones- THOSE’D make a great TV series- but I’m not really sure how. Maybe an anthology series for teens? I just really like the world they’re all set in.
This could be interesting . . .
Might keep me watching the CW
Dawson’s Vampires?
Is it awful? I’ve never read them. Oh, and Scream 2 is totally underrated.
Personally, I like all three Scream movies, although the third one is admittedly a big step down.
That’s what happens when you get a new screenwriter to pen something that was created and written by someone else before. They never quite get it.
Scream 2 rocks , The guy from sliders is in it ,
I’m down with anything that leads people to the vampire genre… and I’m willing to give it a try. Very interesting choice for the CW, hopefully they realize that keeping Supernatural around is a good idea.
I’ll probably set my Tivo for this one and check out the first episode, I mean, why not?
I’ll check it out. I enjoyed the books when I read them as a teenager. Best books ever? No. But the genre wasn’t flooded the way it is now.
let us know on the podcast when the show starts
Pathetic.
Terrible idea.
I eagerly await the fail surely to be accompanied by a legion of sad fans who will claim it was the greatest thing since breathing.
ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh undecided…
heyyyyyyy Sunshineyness, are you going to do a review on these books???
Oh, I so am now.
aweeeeeeeesome sauce!!
I’ll check this out when it starts but I don’t have high hopes for it
On the subject of Vampire shows anyone else watching Being Human ?
Is it just me or did the scary vampire sort of go the way of the dinosaur? I’m going to give this a shot but I’m afraid that this will probably be a generic teen drama with vampires tacked on.
I told one of my good friends and she squeed so it can’t be that bad
Oh great :( Another friggin teen drama. When will they end along with reality shows?!?! Someone stop the madness. And why must they mess with the vampire genre? Everything was fine with just “Angel”, “True Blood”, I even like “Moonlight”. Now we have “Twilight” and now this
the only thing I am hoping for is that we get a good spoof movie out of all these vampire tween dramas. harken back to the good ole days of the first scary movie (which is a great spoof on the horror movies at the time even).
look, i think that it wll be a good show but maybe not, i have never read these books but i hsve read the twilightr saga which is not so much focused onthe horror element as apposed to romance, but am reading another vampire saga called the house of night which is pretty good..considering i am 14 year old girl..i think that they should make a show of it because it has horror and just the right touch of romance…….plus it has a school comparrisons..we all have the cliques aznd enemys…
