Matt Smith is the New Doctor! UPDATED!
Saturday, January 3rd, 2009
The BBC have announced that Matt Smith will be the eleventh Doctor Who.
He is a relative unknown actor, although he has had several leading roles and starred in the BBC drama ‘The Ruby in the Smoke’ with the one and only Billie Piper (maybe she put in a good word). He will be the youngest actor to play the Doctor at 26 years old.
He was cast over Christmas and will begin filming for the fifth series of Doctor Who in the summer. David Tennant is filming four specials in 2009.
His first full episodes as the Doctor will not be until 2010. Will the transformation from David Tennant to Matt Smith take place this year ?
Just thought I might add a few pictures of Matthew Smith from The Ruby in the Smoke that I was able to find. -Ben

interesting… different… I like it but will have no real oppinion until I see him in action
though I really liked him in Ruby in the smoke
Im not a doctor who fan though i randomly watch it if its on but im not feeling the new guy. Seems a bit young, rather they made him older than Tennant. Have to wait and see though.
Wha? Wha? Wha? What happened to Patterson Joesph?
Well this is a bit of a shock…
I checked the sites announcing Joseph a while back, and those sites admitted in the article that it was still a rumor. Sort of like the Eddie Murphy Riddler thing…sorry Nick
Finally…anticipation…over!
Me and Will are going to talk about this on Geekeasy tonight. But if you guys want to check him out, there’s a video on Youtube of him being intereviwed about being cast as The Doctor. Check it out
interesting is about all I can say. I hope they cut his hair.. don’t really care for the flock of seagulls look he had in that interview. I know nothing about him, but he seems genuinely excited which is always a good thing.
Damn I was looking foward to seeing Patterson Joesph’s doctor. Having just marathoned through Doctor who over the last week I feel really dissapointed with anybody who isnt Tennant, but I dont know this new guy and will be looking foward to seeing what kind of doctor he is.
On a side note I just watched “Blackpool” a show Tennant was on in 2004 and I recomend it to anybody who needs a good fix of tennant (at least youtube the scene with the smiths song playing, brilliant).
Blackpool was incredible :D
I can think of worse people for it but not a lot
I just think that it is funny that there were all these rumors about how the new Doctor was going to be a woman or black, and in the end its just another white guy.
So far all the decisions the BBC have made on actors for the show have been right on the mark. I can remember back to when Billie Piper was announced as the next companion. Billie Piper, a cheesy pop star who had no previous acting experience – how could she be any good? How wrong I was. I’ve not seen Matt Smith in anything before, but I trust that he will bring something new, interesting and unique to the role. Can’t wait.
I’m sad about Patterson Joseph not getting the part. But I think this guy could do a good job. He seems passionate about the part which is always a plus.
I’d have liked to have seen Patterson Joseph, but so it goes.
I’m reserving any real opinion on the eleventh Doctor until I see him in action.
The BBC has a pretty good track record with this. I think more or less every regeneration has initially seemed dubious and even off-putting, but eventually the actor comes to feel appropriate for the part (except possibly Colin Baker).
I think the only one that really escaped that reaction was Eccleston, because of Doctor Who’s long hiatus before the revival, and because his immediate predecessor was a one-time role in a controversial TV-movie (discounting the audio adventures and animated episodes and such).
Also, I agree with Neil Gaiman in that I trust Moffat’s instincts.
Got to admit, I was skeptical at first when I read this, but after youtube-ing his work and watching a few interviews I am completley on board for Matt Smith to become the 11th Doctor.
It will be odd at first seen as David Tennet has rulled the screen as The Doctor. Change CAN be a good thing and I think in this case it most definatley is.
Though with Steven Moffat claiming series 5 will be a darker series to the previous can Matt Smith pull it off? I hope so, can’t wait to see how all this turns out, although aren’t we all getting ahead of everything. David Tennent still has four hour or so long specials to shoot and Matt Smith will not start until 2010. He also stated that there are various scripts finished for series five already!
Russel T. Davies has said that the first special will air around Easter time, then the next about summer and the remaining two are, twp part episodes. So I’m guessing it’s going to be big. Who do you all think will get the honour of killing of Tennent?
I can imagine it’ll be a sacrafice to save somebody.
I’ve always liked the idea of The Doctor getting younger with each regeneration. Sort of like how you want to be older when you’re young, but when you get old, you start wanting to be younger.
Interesting way to look at it
I am almost finished with the second season of Dr Who, so I should be caught up well before Matt Smith takes over the role. I think he looks fine, but I’ll have to see what he does with the character.
Hello! I just joined the site, and I love the content and the writing.
I believe that the show is in good hands. Russell Davies and Julie Gardner would not have handed the show off to new Exec Producers and Head Writer that wasn’t up to snuff. Steven is an awesome writer. I’m very curious to see where he is going to go, especially if it’s darker. I’ve loved how dark Battlestar Galactica has been. I’m sad that it’s going to be drawing to a close over the next 10 weeks or so plus another TV movie (”The Plan.”) Matt Smith is going to be fine. If you’ve watched the Doctor Who Confidential: The Eleventh Doctor he appears very enthusiastic about the role, and he appears very talented in the clips shown of him from other work he has done. I choose to believe that the show will continue to be ‘fantastic.’ Too much enthusiasm surrounds the revival of this show for it to be any other way.
Cheers!
I am also sad that BSG will be ending. Hopefully the new Caprica series will end up being good.
Welcome to the site MacTimeLord! Glad to have you aboard!
Upon closer examination of the photo at the end of the article, I note that he looks a little like a young Peter Davison, aka the Fifth Doctor.
Wonder if that had any bearing on the casting choice (though I suspect it would’ve been subconscious even if it did).
I thought that as well. Especially watching him in the DWC with the announcement. Glad someone else noticed that as well.
I’ll miss David
But this guy look good I hope he also can act good
He’s 26 years old? Wow, when I first saw those 11th Doctor publicity photos I was shocked that they’d cast a teenager as the Doctor. haha
I just figured they were “reaching out” to that younger fan base.
Though I’m sure Smith will make a very interesting Doctor, it is taking me a long time to come around to liking this choice.
I can say one thing, though: as much as I like DT I’m dying to see the new guy in action!
