Early Review for Whedon’s Dollhouse
Friday, December 5th, 2008
Appearing online is an early review for Joss Whedon’s new show Dollhouse…
Apparently the pilot for Dollhouse may not make television history, but there is still hope, I mean come on its Joss. Time Magazine posted a review online for the new show and had more than a few things to say about the pilot…
“If it weren’t for Whedon’s pedigree, I’m not sure I’d be dying to see a second episode. But for me, the main draw now is not seeing Dushku become a different person every week, but getting to see Joss Whedon become a different writer every week.”

Early reports of Firefly were lukewarm at best, but the show turned out to be great. I hope this is the same situation.
I want Dollhouse to be good, and I really like the concept for the show, unlike the author of that review. I can’t wait to see it for myself, and I’ll definitely give it several episodes to find its feet.
Firefly got canceled, so that’s not exactly re-assuring for those of us that wants to see not only another Whedon series, but also see one prosper :)
That review pretty much sums up my expectations. I’ll give it a fair try because it’s Joss, but beyond that the premise doesn’t really interest me – a character of the week procedural.
Joss’s strength is in making epic and long story arcs based upon interesting dark mythologies and strong (female) characters – peppered with great humor. I guess this seems dark…but at best the serialization will have to be in the background or come out through her memory leaks (ala Faye Valentine?)
He is enamored with Dushku, who just doesn’t do it for me. Never really liked how she played Faith. Seems a vanity role for her, and one I’ll be surprised if she is up to.
I have to agree with MtnMeister about my feelings towards the show, it doesnt look like something I would really watch without Joss attached to it. I do like the cast (Helo and Faith, I cant really talk to badly about those guys) and will give the show at least afew episodes to get a taste for it.
However from the previews and what we have seen so far I dont think its like Feye, it seems to be a residual gradual memory of things they are picking up after the initial brain wipe.
I could be very wrong and will admit to being very standoffish to this project, but want to see it be a success, if for nothing else other than Joss deserves one.
@ Prettz: I too like Helo, and that could offset my not-so-warm feelings towards Dushku. It’s funny, I feel like I “owe” it to Joss to give it a try – he gave us so much via Buffy and Firefly (and to a lesser degree, Angel) so the least I can do in retunr is to give his new projects a try even if they don’t sound interesting.
(I will admit that I actually loved the Firefly concept when I first heard it “Cool! A space western with Buffy wisecracks? How could that possibly fail?”)
@ MtnMeister
Honestly? I was expecting firefly to be a low rent live action cowboy bebop when I first heard about it………wich knowing me, I probly still would have loved.
@SaberJ: I was only referring to Firefly’s quality, not its untimely demise. :p
@MtnMeister: Angel to a “lesser degree”? I guess its a matter of opinion, but I think that Angel was much more consistent than Buffy was, and it had some insanely great story lines and characters. I would at least put it on par with the other two, if not higher.
I like Angel, I’m in the middle of S4. The whole Conner storyline bothers me. Then again, the S4 BtVS with Adam and the Initiative sucked too.
@Pretz
I also thought Firefly could be a live action Cowboy Bebop with Joss humor – which I too would have loved! Cowboy Bebop is such a gem. I remember my daughter and I watching the last episode and my daughter was crying. My wife was like “how can you guys be crying over a cartoon?!”
Firefly needed an Edward! Joss missed the opportunity to have Mr. Universe be a grown up Edward!
Hey, even if it’s a “persona of the week” procedural. Buffy started out as a “monster of the week” procedural too.
