Dinklage Cast In HBO’s ‘A Game Of Thrones’
Thursday, February 5th, 2009
HBO’s adaptation of George R. R. Martin’s A Song af Ice and Fire series is finally moving forward.
Actor Peter Dinklage has been cast as Tyrion Lannister in HBO’s A Game of Thrones.
Tyrion, (a POV character from the start of the series) is Tywin’s third child, a misshapen dwarf nicknamed “The Imp” and “The Halfman”. As a fan-favorite character, he is the personal favorite of the series’ author George R. R. Martin as well. Though Tyrion shares his father’s talent for political maneuvering, he receives little respect from Tywin because of his deformity, sharp tongue, penchant for whoring, and the death of his mother during his birth. He is capable of cruelty to his enemies, but also has great sympathy for fellow outcasts and the mistreated.
The series will be written by David Benioff (The 25th Hour and X-Men Origins: Wolverine) and D.B. Weiss (writer of the ill-fated Halo adaptation).
Still no word on when it will go into production, or when it could possibly air.

I am really looking forward to this series. It sounds interesting and Randy can’t say enough good things about the book series.
I think the series could totally be a gateway drug to all that is A Song of Ice and Fire. So in addition to wanting it for myself, I want it for everyone else.
Peter Dinklage wasn’t my personal choice for Tyrion, but he probably would have been my second choice. He’s as big of a name as they come in the world of midget actors. He’s very talented. The was a lot of support for him to get the role, so it’s nice to see that the producers are following through on taking fan casting suggestions seriously.
The one thing that I will say is that I think the very beginning of A Game of Thrones is probably the weakest part of the story. So I’m a little worried that the Pilot may not warrant a full season order. But I also think that the beginning story will be better told on screen than in text. Part of the main problem I have with those early parts is the sheer number of characters you are introduced to in such a small amount of time.
“So I’m a little worried that the Pilot may not warrant a full season order.”
I don’t know . . . the pilot’s gonna probably end with a particular incident involving an individual seeing something and then having something bad happen to that individual. That’s the kind of sick, dramatic, awesome cliffhanger that may MAKE the pilot. The problem is the rest of the first season up until the end.
Though, look at Rome. Not much happens in Rome. It’s mostly people talking with some occasional bloodshed. It was still rivetting.
I think this will be the same way, if they have the same flavor and level of acting.
I definitely hope your right. I couldn’t remember how far into the first book that event happens. That would definitely leave people hanging on. I always get worried when the fate of a season rests on one episode. I haven’t watched Rome (It’s actually the highest HBO show on my list though!) I’m wondering if they had the same, “We will pick up the show if the Pilot looks good” stipulation. I guess they probably did. It’s not that uncommon. It just seems like it, since there aren’t many shows people follow before the Pilot is even made.
That particular event happens at the end of the ninth chapter (out of 73 total), so it happens fairly early. Plus those early chapters happen over a fairly short period of time, so I could definitely see the pilot of the show encompassing everything up until that particular incident.
Isn’t it fun being deliberately vague in our descriptions? ;)
This. Is. Awesome.
I really like this casting. I think he fits the role nicely. I can’t wait to hear about who they get for the other roles.
It’s hard for me to picture, because of his hair and the cleanliness of his appearance. But I’m certain once they get him nice and dirtied up, he will be perfect. With that said, they are bastards for letting this one slip and not the others. Ultimately, this is good news, but not very surprising. I’m interested in just about every other character’s casting choices more.
Don’t get me wrong. Tyrion? Top 3-5 favorite characters in the story, easy. But in any decent casting discussion Dinklage got mentioned. So I’m more interested in the characters that had dozens if not more names mentioned as suggestions. Especially Arya and Jaime/Cersei. Those will make or break the series, IMHO.
Once they announce a cast, we should check to see how many people from our own casting lists from a while ago got on the show, if any.
Rome, I miss it so much.
