Bryan Fuller wants to make a new Star Trek series
Saturday, March 21st, 2009
On March 2nd, the acclaimed TV creator/writer Bryan Fuller told IF Magazine that he’s kicking around an idea for a new series set in the Star Trek universe.“I would love to return to the spirit of the old series with the colors and attitude. I loved Voyager and Deep Space Nine, but they seem to have lost the ‘60s fun and I would love to take it back to its origin,” Fuller told IF Magazine.
Fuller himself got his start in TV by writing scripts for Star Trek Voyager and Deep Space Nine. The creator of Dead Like Me and Pushing Daisies offered no details as to whether or not this new Trek would take place before, after or even during the upcoming J.J. Abrams origin saga.
In other Bryan Fuller news, the upcoming episode of Heroes, ‘Cold Snap,’ will be the first one written by Fuller since the first-season Company Man, which many say is the best Heroes as ever been.
Just a thought; how cool would it be if Greg Grunberg was cast as the new Captain?

So long as the writing is good, I’m all for it.
Depending on the nature of the show, I’d like to see them plan out the entire series like JMS did with Babylon 5.
Can’t agree. JMS did some great things in B5 but the worlds are uterly distinct. JMS was interested in exploring like myth, spirituality, and gods. And he did it well, it’s a point of pride for me that atheists are often better at exploring faith than our theist counter parts. We ask better questions whereas theists get to “god did it” and think they’re done (still coming down from BSG finale)
But Star Trek is a humanists world. I can’t image Jim Sheridan and Delan having the chutzpah to ask god for ID.
Hmmm… Ronald Moore was able to bring in the ideas of religion and spirituality in DS9 to mixed results. *Snort* But then, I’ve always thought BSG was everything he ever wanted to do in DS9 but wasn’t allowed to do.
I think calling DS9 “mixed” is being generous. It seemed like RDM wanted to talk about gods and religion while at the same time acknowledging that it didnt fit in the Star Trek universe very well.
So we get “gods” but the show never fails to remind us that they are just aliens who live in a worm hole. At the same time we’re supposed to respect the religion of the bajorians who are worshiping aliens like ass backwards primatives. No commitment, No follow through.
And also the aliens have magic powers when ever it’s convienient.
And Nick, in the time it took you to write “don’t tempt me” you could’ve just written your opinion. What’s the point of commenting if you’re just going to write “no opinion”? And for the second time, is there some reason you don’t just hit the “reply” button?
Since it seems to be deeply offending you, I’ll hit the gosh darn reply button.
Second, the reason I try to avoid religious arguement is becuase it will go on for days and days and eventually each party member will reduce their cases to just swapping petty insults at each other, which I’m sure is like, you’re perfect Sunday, but I could do without it.
I dont get comments like yours. If you don’t want to get into it just don’t leave a comment. Seems a little simpler to me.
And I don’t care if you use the “reply” button (although I recommend it) I was curious if you had some reason for not using it. You still haven’t told me why, I should call you daffy, the way you keep ducking my question.
Cool new avatar by the way!
In all honesty, I just don’t think to hit the reply button. I just get in the habit of going to the bottom of the comment line and starting there. It’s the Mexican in me; we’re used to taking our place at the bottom
Rusty James, don’t tempt me with religious argument!
It is very cool news, have been missing star trek for a while now. The movies are great but but I really want a new series.
And I agree with rusty, (as an athiest myself) this new series will be a lot better if it sticks with a sceptic/science approach to things.
@Rusty
1) I responded to your skeptic geek post in the forums.
2) The point I was trying to make about JMS was that he took the time to figure out what his story was and to have a sentence or two for every episode so he knew what was going to happen. I think this would be a good step for most tv series to take.
3) I think the messages and themes in B5 are inline with a secular humanist outlook. (Think of Sheriden asking the Vorlons and Shadows to leave so the younger races could grow up uninhibited, sort of like throwing away Gods). I too was also disappointed in the BSG finale with the “God did it” answer to things. Stuck me of being too much “deux aux machina”
4) Your interpretation of DS9 strikes me as bizarre.
5) I tend to agree with TNN, that most religious discussions can are pointless. I think that might be avoidable of the nature of the dialogue between the two parties was highly structured.
I’m not sure I like the idea of going back to that “60s fun”. I hope he doesn’t want to turn make a goofy campy show, which doesn’t take itself seriously.
The thing is, the only thing that made the 60’s Trek “goofy” by today’s standards was some bad acting, and a small tv budget (even for the day’s standards) take all that away and those scripts were solid and genius even. Where we see “camp” now is not the fault of the writing.
