Spotlight – Shazam App
Wednesday, March 11th, 2009
What’s that song on the radio? Shazam will tell you!
This award-winning free app listens to a portion of the song in question then miraculously tells you the who and what.
Shazam is simple and surprisingly accurate. It catalogs your requests as ‘tags.’ These tags are basically your Shazam history. Tags contain all the usual information: Artist, Song, Album and Cover Art. It also gives Artist bio, discography, the ability to take or attach a picture and a link the YouTube video (if available.)
You can sort tags by artist, date, or title. Just click Tag Now and Shazam ‘listens’ for 20 seconds.
It’s free and available here.

I’m using Midomi at the moment, but I’ve been thinking about looking at Shazam too, seems like it might offer a little more?
Brb after I download :)
Actually, Midomi has the ability to type lyrics and artist and it’ll give you results. So ok the surface, it seems like more. The thing is that those features can be used as a google search. The big difference is that, in my experience, Shazam is more acurate.
I’ve been using this since it was first released. It’s like magic and one of my favorite apps. It works nearly every time, with only foreign and tiny indie songs giving it trouble.
Crazy thing is that I was thinking of songs for a Christmas CD last year, and I heard a song while I was in the restroom at an Olive Garden. I knew the song, but not the artist. I opened Shazam, held it up toward the speaker (thankfully no one walked in) and now I know. It was like magic.
Ok and I’m back.
I did a test of 50 songs, and Shazam got more correct (though only by about 8).
I still find Midomi more useful, because you can hum/type etc, while Shazam only accepts proper recordings. Though having a tag history is nice.
All up I think I’ll keep using Midomi rather than Shazam.
You know I could *never* get Midomi to work when I hum… Maybe I am tone deaf :)
Actually I still have both on my iPhone.
