Amazon Launches a New Kindle Reader
Wednesday, February 11th, 2009
Amazon have announced this week that they will be releasing a new version of their popular electronic book reader, the Kindle. The Kindle 2 is slimmer, lighter and has a longer battery life than the original version which was released in Nov 2007. Like the original this new version makes use of the high-speed wireless data network, EVDO, to allow books to be downloaded directly to the device when on the move.
The Kindle 2 will have 2GB of internal storage and can be easily expanded via the built in SD card slot. The onboard memory will allow around 1,500 books so more than enough for the average trip on the train.
The screen quality has been increased from 4 shades of grey to 16 shades to allow better reproductions of photos on the 6″ screen.
If your don’t feel like reading then use the ‘Read-to-Me’ function and the Kindle will read the book via the in-built speakers or through headphones.
I’ve been interested in getting an electronic book reader for a couple of years now. In the UK, we only have access to a couple of models including the Sony Reader. I would love to get my hands on a Kindle. The ability to download books and newspapers wherever I am is very appealing. The E-ink displays are very clear and easy to read.
The Kindle 2 should be available from 24th Feb for purchase via the Amazon.com website.

i have also been looking for an electronic book reader for a while myself. i have been leaning towards the sony for a while now but when i saw this i fell in love, the only trouble is, like your self i live in the uk and i have not been able to find out when it is being released over here. any ideas?
There has been no news from Amazon on when they will be releasing the Kindle in the UK. I suspect they are in discussions with data network providers to set up the wireless book download facility.
Am I too old school? I love the feel of a book in my hands and the idea of reading off of a screen seems, I dunno, ech. I’m also very cheap – I love Half Price bookstores and paperbackswap.com. I haven’t paid full price for a book in years, and can’t imagine doing so now. On the flip side, I’ve got Rheumatoid Arthritis, and holding a book, especially a hardcover, can be particularly painful at times, so this would probably be the answer I’d been looking for. Hm. More thought is definitely required.
i agree with you, i love the feel of a book the only trouble is i am running out of space to put them all. i have thought about selling some but i can’t bring myself to part with any of my books.
I love the look and idea of a Kindle. I’d read a lot more if I had one. Especially if you could also get Comics and such on them. But there is no way I would ever pay $350 for one of these. Ever. And the price has yet to come out since they first went on sale.
For that price, I’d just buy a cheap laptop and find some other way to get the material. Sometimes I wonder if these people even want to give people a reason not to pirate stuff.
Iv been hearing alot of rumors about amazon being sued for copywrite laws for kindle book sales but I cant really find any evidence to back this up. Anybody else been hearing this?
Amazon just released a Kindle App for the iPhone. So far it’s pretty cool – I’m just trying it with the free samples so far.
