Wow another?????
Awesome guy’s.
Seriously??!!
If you keep spitting out episodes, I’ll never have time to catch up on ANYTHING!!
wait…why is that a bad thing?
Can more of Scott and I ever be a bad thing?
Is it possible to OD on podcasts?
Damn! I haven’t been able to catch up with the last episode and the Sorcerer’s Stone commentary yet. I guess I’ve got to get more podcast listening done.
It feels good to be productive…
Rome is well worth the money, and I paid full price.
Do yourself a favor and watch it.
Also, kind of a spoiler here….. but, uh, McKidd wouldn’t be involved in a Rome movie…. cause, well- just watch the show.
Oh, and Rome was a co-production between the BBC and HBO at $100 million per season, it only got canceled because of cost- and even then HBO execs have expressed regret over canceling a show that had 5 planned seasons covering a lot of truly awesome history.
I always heard that Rome was only going to be 1 season, but after it was so popular HBO went out and made them make season 2. I may be wrong, but that’s what I’d heard originally.
Eh-hem.
From Empire On-line
“Then, of course, there’s the thorny issue of plotting, but divine intervention might be at hand. “I discovered halfway through writing the second season the show was going to end,” added Heller [creator of Rome]. “The second was going to end with the death of Brutus. Third and fourth season would be set in Egypt. Fifth was going to be the rise of the messiah in Palestine.”
Yeah, he had a huge story planned, and the bean counters took their piggy banks and left him hanging.
That doesn’t necessarily indicate what the original plan was. Only the plan after HBO realized the show was a huge hit. Apparently, it got it’s second season greenlit after Episode 3, according to wikipedia. So if there was a plan to do only one season, that plan didn’t last long. So it’s quite possible you are both right.
I got the Australian boxset of rome for $70 (thats not too bad for alot of series here), and while I havent gotten passed the first few episodes, the box itself is beautiful with a collectors box, a booklet, and some other little trinkets.
Im scared to death to see what they do to Bill and Ted, I loved those movies when I was younger and would hate to see these “hollywood emo” white rapper bill and ted remakes happen.
Great show guys, made the long drive to work feel way too short.
Haven’t listened to the show yet….
But I loved Rome. It was such a dork, history geek soap (more stately than Tudors though) Although parts of the second season bothered me, but I won’t spoil.
Also, do the math- his kids NEVER AGE. The show takes place over a pretty significant stretch of history and THEY NEVER GET OLDER. Bothered me. The first season was phenomenal though.
His kids aged: bastard son went from infant to early teens, quiet daughter went from 6-7 to late teens, eldest daughter went from 13-14 to early twenties.
Yes, your right- they did age a bit, I was exagerating, but not nearly as much as they should have.
I looked it up:
Season 1 spans 8 years, 52 B.C. – 44 B.C.
Season 2 is set between 44 B.C. and 30 B.C.
The baby should have been about 22 by the end of the show. :P
I need to finish Rome. I think I watched about 4 episodes, then missed one and never caught up. It was great up until I stopped watching.
I can’t imagine that HBO wouldn’t have planned more than 1 season. Maybe with the cost, they didn’t think it would go past 1, but wanted it too?
I bet HBO regrets canning Deadwood too. Do yourself a favor and watch that show.
I meant past season 2. :)
Interesting question, Rome might’ve been a joint project with BBC, but all HBO series are expensive on DVD, WHY?
There are usually no more than 13 episodes per season (like the BBC) and it can’t be that expensive to release these DVDs, right? Well, maybe it is because HBO is a subscription channel and not available to the masses and therefore has a potentially smaller audiece?
Yet, The Sopranos was a really popular show. I remember when season 1 came out on DVD it was 80$ retail. jeez
Any ideas?
I think it has to do with no ads on HBO. Their only source of revenue is the monthly subscription fee to the network. They had to make their money through the box sets. I know that they cracked down on letting public venues (bars, dorms, restaurants, community centers, etc) have subscriptions. I remember when Sopranos first got big a lot of bars would host nights where people came to watch the show, drank/ate and got to watch it without subscribing to the network themselves. HBO was none too thrilled with that I imagine.
I remember being dead set against Rome when it first started- the rumor at the time was Rome’s greenlight, could only have been possible if they canceled Carnivale- and I freaking LOVED Carnivale. (Just picked up those box sets 20 bucks each on Black Friday Amazon sale. Squee. Gonnas haves me a Carnivale party!) But I got over it pretty quickly when I accepted that was the mean producer (who basically stated in the cancellation interview that he didn’t care for genre shows) not the shows part. Yeah, where’s a Carnivale movie??? I’d totally kill for a Carnivale movie.
That makes sense Sunshineyness. My dad really liked Carnivale but I never watched it. May have to give it a viewing. It seems to have a good cast (at least I like Clea Duvall)
