Very good review you guys! It’s been over a year since I read Bone last, so I had forgotten a lot of little things, like the funny hats and whatnot.
I noticed that you had some questions nad criticsisms about the Granma Ben, Sister storyline. Did you know that Jeff Smith made a Bone prequel called Rose? It goes into a lot of detail that he didn’t have time to cover in Bone.
Had no idea. Good to know.
Rose really was a pretty good read. The art is cool, but very unusual and it does tell an interesting back story that feels slightly separate from Bone.
Rock on Sunshineyness! I was all over the Disney Adventures as a kid. I loved it when they featured Bone. It was so different. I was floored when I realized at age 10 that it was a real comic. I went out and got all the B&W trades.
Can anyone else see what an amazing movie this could be? I just saw Coraline 3D and I would kill for a good Bone movie with the claymation/CGI mix….the big action scenes, the dragons. It could be a family friendly film, but the story allows for a more mature movie….it could be pretty sweet.
Very nice review. It’s funny. I never realized it, but I literally grew up with Bone. I was about 11 or so when I first read it in the Disney Adventures magazine, and than when I was 19 and went back to get the trades I realized it STILL wasn’t finished I was floored. I actually still have the original three volumes in B&W trades that proudly announce that ‘coming soon vol 5!’
I’m looking at it now and apparently you could call “1800 Smiley2′ to order books and merchandise. :P
It’s funny though you mention a Nicktoon version. There was for a bit an attempt at Nick Studios to make a Bone cartoon but from what I read it was going to be awful. Nick wanted to make a movie with pop songs (I believe they wanted to use NSync songs or Britney Spears stuff, something like that) and they wanted to kiddie it up and popify it and take away a lot of the epic-ness of it. Or at least according to Jeff Smith.
And what Scholastic has done with the series is amazing. I love when kids come into my store and ask for Bone they think it’s this new series and they look so confused when I tell them the series is over and I read it when I was a kid. The parents especially get confused when I tell them they can buy the one volume set cheaper or that there are two side titles as well.
Also, there is an adorable Bone plush available for 13 dollars that I have sitting on my shelf. His backpack opens too and I made a little copy of Moby Dick out of some scrap paper and wrote on the first page “Call me Ishmael.”
