Haven’t even heard the episode yet, but I wanted to give a big welcome back! We miss hearing from you guys. E3 looked like there were going to be some great games this year.
Still no Wayne yet. I’m hoping to get him back to recording soon.
After listening to this again, I have come to the realization that I need to ban the word “cool” from my vocabulary. ;)
Played the demo of Crackdown last night. Gotta say, you are dead on. After I gave it a bit of a chance, it was super addictive. Gonna have to look for it today.
I had a lot of fun playing Crackdown with you today. I hope you didn’t mind the few times I was a little careless with my rocket launcher. ;)
It was a blast. Sometimes literally. :)
My problem with the idea that the psp would become completely digital is that games are afew gigs a piece and im in australia and have capping in my broadband, so it would limit what I could get.
That and i really dont like digital distrabution for games, as I tend to enjoy having a physical copy.
I have to think that they would think of situations like that. I imagine that they could put out physical copies that you could use on your PS3 or PC in order to copy it to your PSP that way instead. After all, along those same lines, you would have to have a way to take them off and put them back on, in case you run out of space.
Well thats another problem with digitising everything, the space. we would have to buy the memory sticks to hold all our games aswell….so in many ways its still a physical copy. I understand we could keep them in external harddrives or something, but it still seems like you’d need the equipment.
If Sony decides to go completely digital with the PSP, then the new PSPs will have a built in memory solution of 6-12 gigs. Also, I don’t know how the Playstation store works, but if it is anything like Xbox live, then you can also delete and redownload the games later if need be.
Now, if you plan on going all digital with an original PSP, then that may be a problem. Still, digital is a big improvement in a lot of ways. For instance, if you don’t have to press disks or ship to stores, then that it a lot of money they don’t have to spend. So in theory, they should be able to pass some of the savings on the consumers.
In theory yes, but they would still have issues. While I like the idea of a fully digital world alot of people would find the change hard to swallow and I believe alot of the casual gamers or parents of gamers will be cut off. That isnt nearly as big an issue as it would of been afew years ago but its still a valid point.
The ps3 works the same way yes, but that goes with my old point about many countries having a caping on their broadband, having to redownload games would be extreamly inconveniant.
I personally like the idea of psp 2.0 being digital (aside from my downloading cap) , but I think it would be a tall order.
Well, if ti’s going to start, it’s going to start on a mobile platform with smaller sized games. But I think it’s a completely natural and understandable step, personally. I doubt that they will completely shut off the retail chains to start with. But if you buy one of these PSPs, you will be doing it with the understanding that you no longer have the option to use UMDs. For people that understand that, it’s not a problem at all.
But I imagine that it will be another case like Popcap or Steam, where a large portion of their business is done through the downloading of games, but you can still find physical copies in stores.
It’s probably the mindset that XBLA got me into, but I just don’t mind smaller games being digitally distributed anymore. I still like having my physical games for the big Xbox 360 games. But I totally don’t mind if I don’t have a physical copy of Puzzle Quest, Carcassonne, Uno Rush, etc. Mobile gaming is the next logical step. Whoever tries it first will have a huge leg up on the rest of industry.
Sorry…whoever tries it second. Ask Apple how digital distribution is working for their gaming business. Now, it looks like Microsoft and Sony will be racing to get a piece of the pie next between the Zune HD and PSP.
Well, it’s already beginning. There are several new bits of news, announcements, and rumors that have happened since we recorded. The Modern Warfare 2 trailer looks fantastic, and the studio behind the Conduit has announced one of their new Wii games, Gladiator A.D. (IGN is supposed to reveal the other one tomorrow).
Major Nelson is going to give away tickets to the Microsoft press briefing. Nothing else is included. No tickets to the show floor, or plane tickets. But even so, both he and his co-host say you will not want to miss the show. They say it’s something you will look back on and say, “I was there when they announced that.”
Of course, they could be completely off base on hyping something people won’t be interested in. But the more they continue to hype the show, the more I think they have something big to show. Especially Major, who is a big time gamer. He also sees all the rumors people come up with first hand. If he thought it was something everyone had already guessed, he would have laid off the hype a tad bit.
It’s going to be a great E3, I think.
At least one of the rumors we talked about has already been confirmed. The ZuneHD was announced yesterday. It has a touch screen, and it will be integrated with XBox Live. There aren’t a whole lot of details yet, but I’m sure we’ll hear more next week.
It was revealed, at the very least: http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/26/zune-hd-is-official-heading-your-way-this-fall/
Looks pretty attractive. I like the Zune for the most part. Though I’m not a big fan of it’s marketplace software. Unnecessarily large and a resource hog.
But yeah, they’ve already confirmed that it will interface with XBLA in some way, so I’m curious to see what they have in mind. If I can play Carcassonne on a Zune? Sign me up. But some of those games obviously weren’t made with something like a Zune in mind.
Seeing as how Microsoft sent out a press release, and they have an official page for the ZuneHD, I’d say it’s been announced.

If it ends up having a price point somewhere in the DS to PSP range, and you can play at least some arcade games on it (it’d be especially cool if you could play ones you already own), then I might consider getting one. Otherwise, I don’t really need (or want) another portable device.
Yeah, I know it was announced. The point was that they actually revealed what it looked like. That was in response to you saying there wasn’t a lot of details, not in response to you saying it was announced.
What I meant with “not a lot of details” was that we don’t know all the system specs, how exactly it will integrate with the 360 and to what extent, whether it plays games XBLA or otherwise….you know, that sort of thing.
Yep, I knew what you meant. That’s why I said “At the very least”. In other words, we may not know much about it, but at least we got to see what it looks like. It’s one of the few details we got.
From IGN Concerning Microsoft’s E3 event:
May 29, 2009 – Monday, June 1 at 10:30am PST, Microsoft kicks off E3 with its annual press conference. During the presser, you’ll be witness to a number of new announcements and see some games showcased for the very first time. IGN will be there every step of the way. But when the curtains close around noon, don’t shut down your computer. We have more.
As soon as the conference ends, we’ll have exclusive previews of three of the biggest games shown during the press conference. Here’s a hint: one was announced a while back, two are being announced at the show. While you’ll see demos of both during the press conference, we’ll have brand new bonus videos for each game and greater details. Trust us — these games will not disappoint.
On top of these exclusives, expect impressions of the biggest games as well as our overall thoughts on the conference. Keep in mind that once Microsoft has had its say, the day is far from over. EA and Ubisoft are also holding press conferences on Monday. It may be best to just take the day off, sit in front of your computer and read IGN until you go blind.
…So, 2 un-announced games, and one announced game. I would assume the announced game would be ODST. I what the un-announced games are going to be. They said the games “will not disappoint”. I would if we will see Peter Jackson’s Halo game. I doubt there would be two Halo games sharing the spotlight. Likely a Lionhead title. Hopefully something different than Fable. That’s too recent.
