GeekiN Episode #85 – Stirring The Pot
Sunday, December 14th, 2008
In this weeks episode, I try to stir the pot a little with some easily disputable conversations. Did Twilight make for a better movie than it did a book? Are award shows overrated and a slap in the face of genre fans? We discuss these topics and more. Take a look after the break for the complete topic list, as well as the Boxoffice report and GeekJerk Reaction lineup.

Ahhh right on time to be listend to at work tomorrow, I cant thank you enough for helping cure the boredom of the workplace.
Damn you Randy! How can you hate The Fly, it’s one of my favourite films.
I watch award shows because films I do care about are nominated, the best film I’ve seen all year is Vicky Cristina Barcelona, it’s an amazing movie that kept me in awe the whole way through. The Dark Knight was good, but it is far from my top 5 of the year… Never heard of A Christmas story, what is it?
The fly is what it is. A decent cheesy horror movie. I don’t hate it. But I don’t need it to be retold either.
You’ve never heard of A Christmas Story? Check the Christmas movies poll over to your right, then imdb it. Anyway, I think you’ll be in the extreme minority of people that don’t at least consider The Dark Knight to be one of the best 5 of the year. I’m probably in the extreme minority of people that consider it to be in the top 5 of all time though, so we are even. :)
Woo hoo.:D I’m kind of excited that my question to you guys ended up being question for listeners to answer. I thought, you know I really haven’t heard any talk about True Blood since I caught up a little with the Podcast. I was surprised you didn’t skim the email.
Now,I shall type up a email on if I watch/like True Blood.
LEGACY! LEGACY! LEGACY!!!
The sound quality on this episode was really good guys, clear and loud.
Im one of the few people who didnt mind the twilight movie, I knew what I was getting into from, the preview, sure it was stupid and as alot of problems (one of the most anoying for me was it felt like i was watching a 2 hour music video the way it was edited), but it kept me from being bored for afew hours.
Oh, and I have to agree with everybody, the fly was awesome.
I liked the fly when I was a kid, but later in life I watched it again and didn’t like it at all. My taste changes constantly though.
Prettz: Thanks for the update on the sound quality. I thought it should have been at least loud, but I didn’t know about clear. Because often Garageband was showing the sound as peaking quite a bit, which can cause distortion at times. Anyone else have an opinion on the matter?
The audio levels and clarity sounded fine to me. I was able to understand everything perfectly at my normal volume level.
What about before? Had you noticed any issues before? On my computer speakers, I’ve always been able to make everything out just fine. But apparently car speakers and possibly people listening on their MP3 players has been a different case. I’ve heard at least a couple people say that the volume was previously really low.
I always listen to podcasts on my work computer, so I can’t really tell you what it’s like on an mp3 player.
I am really looking forward to Brothers Bloom. Unfortunately it isn’t coming out this week like you said on the show. They have moved the release date into May 2009. Normally that doesn’t bode very well for the quality of a film, but I have read a few reports around the net from people who have seen it at film festivals. All those reports seemed to really like the movie.
Regardless, there is one reason that I am really looking forward to this movie: I loved Rian Johnson’s first movie, Brick. I really want to see what he does with his second film.
BTW, you can watch a trailer for Brothers Bloom here: http://www.apple.com/trailers/independent/thebrothersbloom/
@ SaberJ
I listen on an mp3 player in work, and it sounded up to par with every other podcast on my playlist.
@Polygon Wizard- I love Brick! I was wondering why Brothers Bloom hadn’t come out yet, but I think they pushed it back because the Fall season was becoming too crowded. Regardless, I can’t to see how Rian Johnson has grown as a filmmaker sense Brick.
I don’t think it was necessarily a strong fall so much as a weak 2009. After all, 2009 was supposed to be the year effected by the writer’s strike the most. I don’t think that will be the case anymore, given the fact that there were a lot of movies shuffled around to fill those holes (Star Trek, Harry Potter, and now likely this movie), but still.
Brick is indeed a phenomenal film and I was really curious when his next film would come out. Judging by that trailer, Brothers Bloom looks fantastic! I can’t wait to see that!
Just started listening to this week’s ep and had to throw in my two cents. I completely agree, Randy, that not every story has to be a message about female empowerment. Twilight is pure escapist romance geared for teens, that can be enjoyable to adults as well. If you try to read anymore into it, you certainly will be disappointed. Anyway, I’m sure a lot of this has been covered, but I’ve been away for a while and am just making it back.
Welcome back, WonderJenn. I’ll refrain from commenting on that, because the Twilight review already got heated enough over that issue. But I’m glad to see there are a few people around that agree.
Glad to have you back around, BTW.
*Waves at WonderJenn*
Great episode guys, yeah audio levels were fine though I wish Wayne weren’t on that phone, hehe.
@Jack, Christmas Story is a great Xmas movie but it is VERY American so I don’t know how it would translate.
Wonders Years was also great, how dare you. :)
So do we send our thoughts on True Blood to questions@geekshow.us?
I think Brothers Bloom was pushed back because Mark Ruffalo didn’t feel like doing press for the movie. His brother recently died from a gunshot.

answers@geekshow.us … Guess I should expect that a Wonder Years and Christmas Story fan wouldn’t be able to understand simple instructions. ;)
How dare you sir!
:)
Just didn’t hear the address I guess.
Good day!
Winnie Cooper FTW
I thought that I would just add that as for vampire movies that came out this year I saw one recently that I thought was amazing.
Its a Swedish film called ‘LET THE RIGHT ONE IN’. And I think it was freakin’ brilliant. Its more vampire drama/child’s coming of age story rather then a horror movie (though its still violent and bloody). I would not be surprised if it was in line for a few awards, and I’m pretty sure it will at least get a best foreign film nomination at the oscars.
I have only heard good things about Let the Right One In. I really want to see it, but I doubt I’ll have the opportunity to do so until it comes out on DVD.
DVDs? Oh, I remember those. We got a PS3 assuming that we’d be on the forefront of the next digital (HD) format. Got it in March and have yet to watch a Bluray disc, and I got 4 with the PS3. We stream content from our computers to the PS3 to the HDTV. Or we just Tivo the HD “airings” of TV shows. I want my movies like I want my music: digital file. Physical media is so 2003.
