Saturday, December 6th, 2008
Hey guys, miss us? Another week, and another episode. With a lot of the recapping out of the way, we attempt to work our way back to more up-to-date news items. However, ultimately, we still find ourselves talking about some news that we missed last week. However, we do eventually have a full slate to discuss. Keep Reading for the full show notes.
- George R R Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire is getting it’s pilot television episode made by HBO. The result of that will determine whether or not the first season gets the greenlight. We discuss the “If We Ran HBO” article from the website.
- Tron 2, Originally titled Tr2n was renamed TRZ and the confusion begins
- Bruce Wayne killed off in the comics by Simon Hurt, claiming to be Bruce’s not so dead father. Will we see similarities with the next Batman movie?
- Bolt has fantastic Pixar-like quality. Wayne thinks it may share too much in common with Pixar movies.
- Xbox 360 Jasper Motherboard includes 256mb onboard storage, less heat, less power consumption.

Scott mentioned something to me the other day about the volume levels being low on the show. Anyone else experiencing this? Is it any better this week? I boosted the overall volume, but I don’t really have any way of determining if it’s loud enough yet or not.
Also, I’m kind of happy to be doing the show in such a format that show notes can be posted again. I always enjoy going back to the first episodes and reading through those to see what panned out, what didn’t, etc. Lots of fun.
I noticed that on some of your older show’s, not all of them, and not as much lately.
I save my podcasts for work, and the the louder the better to drown out the noise, so i’ll save this till after work tomorrow before I put my 2 cents in.
The thing is, my headset is really high quality (Versus the mic on the headset, which doesn’t seem to be that great, since I have to crank the output volume and the mic gain almost all of the way up on the mixer in order to make the volume levels halfway decent). So everything sounds loud in my headset. Also, the levels are almost always nearing clipping level when recording. So it seems to be an issue with the actual volume levels that Garageband is giving everything. I keep tweaking everything, because I don’t want to just blow everyone out that listens to the show.
So if I know the volume levels are still kind of low, then I can continue crawling up the volume scale, and see what works. I generally never get a lot of feedback on this issue, so I’m never quite sure what sounds good, and what doesn’t.
Thanks for answering, though. Let me know what you find out.
Hi, yer the volume was really low on last weeks show. I always listen in my car on the way to work and i had to have it up really loud to be able to hear you guys. Wayne seemed to be harder to hear than you but that was probably because he was on his phone. Not listened to this weeks yet but i’ll let you know.
So what happened with the intros? No more?
I liked the intros…
I agree with titanncc, Wayne is still lower. just got back from work and the sound is still about 70-75% lower than most of the other podcasts I listen too, it was still very listenable, but it was there.
Other than that it was a great show and after listening to it on the last few episodes I desided to go pick up the first book in gthe song of ice and fire series, it is on the bottom of a long list of books to get done so im hoping im feeling like afew good reads over the holidays.
@Sunshineyness: Shhhhhhh. :P
Seriously though. We kind of phased them out during the GeekiNput episodes. Why? Because while I enjoyed them, they generally took about an hour to come up with, usually right at the point we were wanting to actually start, and during the birthday episode, virtually nobody could remember any of them. :)
It’s an idea to revisit, but I’d at least like to be able to get past the whole “talk to Wayne on the Cell phone” phase before I try thinking about it again. :)
I have to say that I also loved Bolt. I’d probably put it on par with early Pixar stuff, storywise, and I definitely see the story similarities you guys talked about. Visually, it is just as good as any current animated stuff. It is especially impressive in 3D.
I absolutely loved all the small touches throughout the movie as well. For example, the action sequence early on in the movie could have been just a plain old action sequence. However, they put in a bunch of little things that made it fun to watch, and pretty funny as well.
LOTR: Conquest is a game made by the studio that made Star Wars Battlefront. The game lets you play every major battle in the LOTR movies, some battles from the books, and a few made up battles (including conquering the Shire as the bad guys). Most of the time, you play as different classes of soldiers that have different strengths and weaknesses revolving around certain types of attack (melee, archery, magic). You will also be able to unlock the use of “hero” characters, AKA major characters instead of generic soldiers. That means you get to play as Legolas, Gimli, Aragorn, Gandalf, etc, but it also means you can play as the Balrog and other bad guys, including Sauron.
The game will have a single-player campaign for the good guys and another one for the bad guys. It will also have co-op play for both online and splitscreen. It will also have several online competitive modes (for up to 16 players) including stuff like capture the flag, hero deathmatch, and a mode called Ring Bearer in which one player is Frodo, and the rest are evil characters trying to get the One Ring.
I am a huge LOTR fan, and I really enjoyed the action games based on the movies that came out several years ago. This is the first LOTR game to come out in quite a while, and it is the first to come out on current-gen consoles. The trailers look very pretty, and the hands-on reports I’ve read seem to indicate that this game could be quite a bit of fun.
I didn’t want to get into big details about Bolt. But I did have to say that my only problem with the movie was that sometimes they weren’t exactly high on plot details. Like how a hamster in a ball can catch up with a truck driving on the road. :P But, those detail flaws were few and far between.
LoTR games have generally come out pretty good. I find it surprising that they have been so sparse lately.
I am *very* interested to see how Delgo turns out. It is a movie that a studio from Atlanta (Fathom Studios) has been working on for about ten years, I remember seeing a trailer for it at least 7 years ago. The latest trailer they put out after they got distribution earlier this fall looks almost exactly the same as the one I saw many years ago.
If you are not an animator, I wouldn’t blame you for not hearing about Delgo until now. The studio made the movie independently and then went to find distribution for it.
I think the story might be good (looks like a riff on Romeo & Juliet), but it’s hard to tell for sure. I hate the character design as everyone looks basically the same, and very generic. The animation also looks rather stiff and uninspired to me. Considering that you normally try to put some of the best stuff in your trailer, I’m not expecting to be blown away by the movie.
All of that said, I really want Delgo to succeed because I am kind of in the same boat. I know from personal experience how hard it is to sell an independent animated film to distributors. If Delgo is able to succeed, maybe that means there’s hope for the movie the small studio I work for has made.
I’m going to give it a boost again in this next episode to full volume. But that’s not a lot of extra ooomph. IF that doesn’t work, I’ll have to seek out 3rd party volume boosting programs.
