Monday, July 21st, 2008
Understandably, everyone had a lot to say for this episode. The good news is that you get over 3 hours of content out of the episode. The bad news? I guess you’ll be wearing out those pause buttons. This is a packed episode, including discussion on Marvel, DC, The Dark Knight, Hellboy, Vertigo, etc, etc, etc. We literally discuss just about everything. Next week is the Television Report Card episode where we plan to discuss the television industry and their recent efforts to make the networks geek-friendly.

I was seeing The Dark Knight, It was amazing. Well, Heath Ledger was amazing.
I’m listening now and can’t believe nobody has brought up “Rocketeer”, that was an awesome comic book movie
I totally forgot about that. I love The Rocketeer! :D
I wanted to give an example about what I was talking about in regards to Sky Captain in the episode. I mentioned how a lot of the shots in that movie are very artistic in the way they are laid out. I think the whole movie has a sort of graphic novel feel to it.
One early example of this “graphic” nature is a pair of shots in the sequence where the robots first attack the city. First, there is a shot where people are pointing at the sky. Three arms lift into the shot and point upwards at a 45 degree angle. The arms are also in silhouette, adding to the graphic novel feel. A little bit later in the sequence, there is a companion shot where three machine guns lift into the frame in the exact same configuration. These two shots are just a small touch (and they go by pretty quickly), but there are a whole bunch of shots throughout this movie that look like a page from a graphic novel. I always thought the shot of the zeppelin attached to the top of the Empire State would be a great cover for a Sky Captain comic.
So Randy, when do we get our two-person Song of Ice and Fire episode? ;)
@Polygon: I’ve definitely considered it. I’m sure I could find some people to listen. But it’d definitely be a much different audience. :)
BTW, I just wanted to mention that Aronofsky is another director that bothers me for not really wanting to try anything beyond “his style”. And since I’ve brought that up, I continue to disagree that all of Burton’s movies are the same. Definitely not in the way that Sin City and The Spirit are similar. Also, Tim Burton /DID/ direct Corpse Bride. Though Scott was right that he didn’t direct Nightmare before Christmas. I feel that the only reason most of his movies feel so similar is because he uses a lot of the same actors in addition to Danny Elfman in a large portion of his movies. And there are areas where some of his movies feel similar. But he isn’t restrained to just that style. Edward Scissorhands may seem similar to a Bettlejuice, but it’s a different feel than a Mars Attacks or a Corpse Bride, IMO.
Anyway, I’ve given The Spirit far too much attention for a movie I have zero interest in. :)
I dunno, there are definitely similar themes in all of Burtons movies… but I don’t really like Burton, just Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow, Corpse Bride, Sweeney Todd & Big Fish (true that’s quite a lot), he is a director whose work always interests me but always ends up in disapointment
Well, “similar themes” wouldn’t be enough to raise the issues that I have. :)
Yay!!! I finally got Watchmen in the mail today! Since I ordered it from instocktrades, I also got The Long Halloween, The Killing Joke, and The Dark Tower: Gunslinger Born in order to get free shipping. :)
Way to support our sponsor Polygon! (and fantastic choices as well!!) :)
That’s what you get for having a good sponsor. :)
I’ve been wanting to get the Dark Tower comic for a while since I am a big fan of the novels. Dark Knight put me into a mood for Batman, so I got a couple of the ones I’ve heard mentioned around here. I got Watchmen because the trailer looked really awesome, and I finally decided on reading it before the movie comes out.
