GeekiN Episode #70: 04/10/08
Thursday, April 10th, 2008
Randy is recovering from having some teeth removed, so this week is a little shorter than most. Wayne picked up "Better Days", the Serenity comic and fills us in on the Whedon joke concerning the covers. Dimension Films is going to make a new Short Circuit movie, I wonder if they will use a white guy to play an Indian again. Heroes will return Sep 15th with a 1 hour recap episode and a 2 hour season premiere. NBC has picked up Knight Rider as part of their 52 week schedule, making year-round TV ours finally! Some shows get moved around to different networks and times, while many more come back to their normal schedules. Wayne gives his take on Southland Tales after watching it over the weekend. The GeekiNbox was not nearly as full has it has been lately, but we don’t complain.

Y The Last Man Vol. 5In this final Deluxe Edition hardcover collecting Y #49-60, Yorick and Agent 355 prepare for their ultimate quest to reunite the last man with his lost love, while the person, people or thing behind the disaster that wiped out half of humanity is revealed. Then, Yorick Brown's long journey through an Earth populated only by women comes to its dramatic, unexpected conclusion.
Instead of killing one of you off I say we go the other route.. add the annoying yet cute child actor to the studio…
I knew going in how short this episode was going to be, but it actually surprised me at how quickly it went by. Wayne, you got a fact wrong with the Serenity covers thing. ‘Those Left Behind’ had three covers for each issue, each with a different character from the series. ‘Better Days’ has one cover per issue, each with three different characters on it. That’s the “joke”, if you want to call it that. Really it’s just Joss trying to do his part to get rid of all of these ridiculous variants that are flooding the comic book market. People complained like crazy with all the covers on that first series because collectors felt as if they just HAD to get all of them. So Joss did this to stop people from complaining. But it is absolutely a different cover for each issue, the difference is that there will only be one cover to choose from with each issue, rather than three.

I also have to mention that if you guys are having problems with sitcoms then you’re just obviously not watching the right ones. If you’re looking for more of the stereotypical laugh track, studio-type sitcom, then look no further than ‘How I Met Your Mother’. MIMYM will go down as one of my favorite TV series of all time and it continues to be a show with an unlimited re-watch-ability to it. Plus, if you end up liking ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’, the main character in that film plays a character (ironically named Marshall) on HIMYM who is in a relationship with none other than Alyson Hannigan (the guy hooks up with Willow AND Veronica Mars?? Lucky guy…). The show is about a father telling his kids the story of how he met their mother, but the funny part is that after 3 years, we have yet to meet her. It’s just about this group of friends and their daily trials and tribulations. Also, there’s Barney. Nothing can really be said other than NPH is Legen… wait for it…. (IHOPEYOURENOTLACTOSEINTOLERANT) dary… If you want more geek-related humor, ‘Big Bang Theory’ is pretty good, although it does fall into stereotypical sitcom pitfalls from time to time. It’s about a bunch of geeky friends and the hot chick that moves in across the hall. It can be really funny when it wants to. There are also TONS of sitcoms that aren’t studio shot like ‘Scrubs’, ‘The Office’ (which I know you mentioned not liking, and I honestly believe that you must be CRAZY because it wonderful!), or ‘Aliens in America’ on The CW. AIA is about family who receives a foreign exchange student from the middle east, and you’d think it would only be about that, but it quickly got away from that angle and moved on to just being a really funny high school comedy. I’m surprised at how much I like it. Great show. So like I said, if you have nothing good to say about sitcoms, you’re just not watching the good ones. :)
I agree with the Doctor on How I Met Your Mother. It’s always funny. The show on before it, Big Bang Theory is funny as well and gets some geek cred. It’s always got a few jokes that only geeks will get.
As for Dr Who, it is returning to SciFi this Friday. We’ll be about three weeks behind the UK on airings.
Well, that is if you aren’t using your special antenna to get the new episodes…
Sitcoms are actually what I was going to comment about too.
I personally think that some of the very few sitcoms we have left are among the best ones ever. Shows that use the single camera format like Scrubs, The Office and 30 Rock take away the studio audience and static sets from the whole process. It allows a level of creativity that we haven’t seen in the past. I find the character development on show like The Office and especially my all time favorite show Arrested development rivals primetime dramas. I know a lot of people have a hard time getting into them because a major part of what makes them good depends on a previous knowledge of characters and show/story history.
Of course if someone doesn’t have any interest in watching sitcoms me saying some are good is pointless, but honestly for an amazing experience I suggest getting hands on a copy of Arrested Development and watching it from the first episode. At the very least you would loose 22 minutes.
I second the idea of watching Arrested Development, it’s amazing, can’t wait for the movie they are working on. I love sitcoms, The Office and Peep Show are the two I really recomend, especially Peep Show, it’s amazingly funny, if you haven’t seen it go out now and buy the 2nd series (where it really takes off) I promise that you will laugh your arse off. If I had to get rid of one type of show it would be sketch shows like Little Britain and The Catherine Tate Show, they aren’t funny in any way shape or form, they just suck.
Hey Jack not all sketch shows are as bad as Little Britain and Catherine Tate. That Mitchell and Webb look is fantastic and if we’re recommending sitcoms I just want to say the IT Crowd is one of the best out there
I hate The Mitchell and Webb Look too, after Peep Show it just isn’t funny. The IT Crowd is pretty good.
Hey guys. I also love How I Met Your Mother and the Big Bang Theory. They are both really good and funny.
How can you not love the Office? Anyway, I hope you’re feeling better Randy.
I’m not sure why I’ve not gotten to enjoy The Office. I’m just not a fan of the humor and style. But yes, I am feeling better. Thanks for asking :)
HAHA! Yes! Mention of the Twilight series. Even if you guys don’t know a thing about the book series besides it’s about vampires. I’d encourage you guys to read the book series,Randy & Wayne.
Southland Tales was a terrible movie. I have never laughed so much but been so bored at a film in my life. Justine Timberlake’s random music videos, sean william scott kept getting killed and I think thrown in that giant toilet. That weird woman who pointed her gun at The Rock because she wanted to have sex with him and he just stood there and done that weird nervous hand thing. Sarah Michelle Gellar was a porn star on a chat show…or something like that. The film was very weird and went on forever, an hour and a half into the film I’m thinking…what is this film about??? :)
