Wow, you both just totally bashed my favorite character on Torchwood.
I absolutely love the character of Gwen Cooper. In fact, as much as I love John Barrowman as Captain Jack, not having Gwen on the new Torchwood series, is almost a complete deal breaker for me.
My argument for her may not be much, but here it is. Gwen Cooper is arguably the most developed character on the show. I mean, the pilot was about her finding and becoming part of Torchwood. I believe we see her life more than the rest of the cast. Also, back when Torchwood had members left (R.I.P. Owen, Toshiko, and Ianto), Gwen was the only person with a strong connection to the world outside of Torchwood, through Rhys. This gave her compassion, and a perspective that the group seldom had before. She is a brilliant character played by a very talented actress. Gwen is totally kick-ass when it comes to carrying out duties for Torchwood, but she has an empathetic and vulnerable side as well, which is explored in several episodes. She would be just another Mary Sue character, if not for her flaws (her mishaps with aliens, her attraction to Jack, her inability to leave things alone, among other things), which I think makes her all the more amazing. And although I, too, sometimes find her incessant desire for Jack a bit grating at times, I understand it. They both have feelings for each other, but they understand that it couldn’t go anywhere (as shown in multiple episodes that reveal Jacks past relationships, not to mention the fact that he can barely maintain a relationship with his daughter due to his “condition”). Gwen loves both Jack and Rhys, but she even said Rhys is the only one that will have her; that’s why she married him. Of course she still loves Jack. I mean, come on, it’s Jack. If anything, the dynamic between the two, strengthens Gwen’s depth and makes her easy to identify with because she, like most people, yearns for what she cannot have.
As for her being ugly, I personally, find Eve Myles (although enhanced by her portrayal of Gwen) strikingly beautiful, from her beautiful, big, bright eyes, right down to the gap in her teeth. I also have never seen a show set in Wales, so I find her accent refreshing and beautifully exotic. So yeah, Gwen Cooper: awesome character that my argument doesn’t even do complete justice for. But that’s just me; She’s kind of my hero…
Like her or not, the argument stands that American television viewers on average wouldn’t get her. She’s got way too thick of an accent. But I don’t think it matters in any case. According to the interview that io9 posted with Russell T Davies, I got the impression that both Jack and Gwen would not really be the main stars. We’ll see.
I haven’t listened to the podcast yet (so I don’t know what Randy & Scott said on the topic yet), but I have to agree with geekbyday here. Gwen is easily my favorite character on Torchwood for many of the same reasons.
I will admit, Gwen does have a pretty heavy accent. It’s part of what I really like about the character. I guess they could tone it down a bit in keeping with the new “international” (read: “let’s get more Americans to watch”) direction of the show.
The “let’s get more Americans to watch” description of toning down an accent is actually rather insulting. When a show or movie is remade in America, they often do many things to dumb it down that I don’t agree with. Thinning out accents is not one of those things.
People have an ear for the accents in the area that they live. There is absolutely nothing wrong with acknowledging that, and ensuring that people can understand what is being said. If an American show is given a British version, I wouldn’t have a problem with them doing away with, for instance, heavy southern accents. Or Northeastern accents.
In any case, her accent is the biggest problem I have with the character making the jump. But it’s not the only one. She quickly became one of my least favorite characters on the show. Mind you, that’s without completing the first season. But I honestly don’t see that opinion changing in a positive way.
I liked her in the first episode, though. That should count for something.
Personally, I hate it when accents are dumbed down. I think sometimes show makers dumb things down too much (accents, plots, characters, whatever) all in the name of accommodating the general audience. I would rather have an accent so thick that I can’t understand it all the time than for everyone to have boring, vanilla accents. However, I also realize that I am not in the majority in this opinion.
They should just go all out and place it 200 years in the future when the earth is under one rule. Then they can place the new Torchwood Hub anywhere they want.
If the torchwood US works out I am going to be buying the whole season .
They also just announced that I think it is nickalodeon will be making a new Voltron animated series.
Here’s what the new series of Torchwood needs: James Marsters as a regular cast member. The couple of Torchwood episodes he was on are probably my favorites of the entire show. However, I’m not sure that I can think of a great way to include him plotwise into an entire new season.
A good Time agent run would be nice. I enjoyed his episode as well. Maybe get some pre Doctor, Captain Jack stories.
I almost want to see an edgy, Bret Ratner version of Snow White just because it would be a disaster of epic proportions. It’s such a bizarre idea that I keep thinking that it might be worth seeing the train wreck.
Then I come to my senses.
However, I can come up with something worse. Replace Bret Ratner with Uwe Boll. *shudder*
I’m telling you. That’s the best idea possible. I always like to lump things I have no interest in together. That way it’s easier to ignore. Now, just have the movie star Sarah Jessica Parker as Snow White, and Will Ferrell as Prince Charming, and I’m good to go (away).
I actually think Will Ferrell as Prince Charming would be quite funny.
Here’s what all the rumors about the Nintendo 3DS would have you believe:
The Nintendo 3DS has the processing power of fifteen PS3s and 15 XBox 360s combined! It is the smallest handheld ever, but it will also render HD graphics that look better than your 100 inch 1080p television! And it also those cool 3D graphics the kids like!
I’m just expecting another iteration of the DS that will happen to have a 3D gimmick added into the mix. Who knows how many games will actually come in 3D anyway. I predict I will think the 3DS looks kind of cool, but I won’t buy it.
If I hadn’t already gotten a 3GS at the beginning of the year, I would probably be getting an iPhone 4. I think it’s awesome that they added an LED flash for the camera. However, I’ll probably have to wait until iPhone 5 or 6 before I get a new phone.
I am excited to get the new iPhone OS. The folders will help to unclutter my screen.
I think I should record some random ramblings (oooh, title!) to take up the fifth day in the Geekshow schedule come August. We wouldn’t want Fridays to feel left out! :D
Get everyone who comments on the sight to send in a a voive message on a given topic and put them together. What about Saturday and Sunday. They must have a voice too!!!
Just wanted to add that I can’t wait for E3 next week!
As far as the Captain America costume, that you all that is holy for not putting the wings on the side of his mask/helmet

Yay! New people! Welcome! :D
Hey Randy what about a role for Nicholas Cage in Snow White. Wouldn’t that just really complete it for you?
Whoa now! We don’t want Randy to explode with pure joy. ;)
Also you guys mentioning Juggernaut make me think about did you guys hear about Vinnie Jones being cast in a role for the new tv series The Cape?
I just read that myself. I generally like Vinnie Jones, although not so much in Xmen 3. Bullet-Tooth Tony from Snatch is probably my favorite Vinnie Jones role. I think he’ll be good as a villain on that show.
