Will Smith Offered ‘Captain America’?
Monday, September 8th, 2008
MTV is reporting the rumor that Will Smith has been offered the role of Captain America in Marvel Studios’ The First Avenger: Captain America and the subsequent film, The Avengers.
First of all let me say what I know a lot of you are probably thinking… “WHAAAT?!”
Now here’s the part where you guys get a little freaked out:
I almost believe this.
But probably not the way you might think. I think Will Smith was in fact offered the role of Captain America, but I don’t think he’ll be playing Steve Rogers. There was a character by the name of Isaiah Bradley who is known in the Marvel Universe as the “Black Captain America”. He later becomes the grandfather of Patriot, a Young Avenger.
I wonder if this is all a lot of craziness over something as simple as a glorified cameo. A possible set-up for a Young Avengers film?
But of course, Marvel’s never been shy about changing up the race and/or gender of it’s characters. So Big Willie might in fact be playing Steve Rogers after all.
Or it could all be BS. Who really knows?

I really like the idea, if he’s playing Isaiah Bradley, I actually think it would be cool if it was even more than just a cameo.
The immediate reaction to this is: STUNT CASTING. But then you think about it…and it actully kind of fits. Will Smith’s one of the few American actors that almost everyone looks up to or at least admires. Whether Isaiah Bradley or Steve Rogers, I’d be fine with Will Smith as Captain America.
i don’t really care if they decided to chance steve roger’s skin color or if he plays Isaiah either way will smith is cool by me. great actor. And i love captain america
I said it in the casting pic thread and I’ll say it again here; out of left field, complete nobody, pretty much built for it- Matt Keeslar most famous for playing The Middle Man in the show of the same name- which is flipp’n sweet and kick-ass- and also Feyd-Rautha Harkonen from Sci-fi Channel’s 2000 Dune miniseries. Seriously, this guy is, like, GENETICALLY Steve Rogers.
As for Will Smith…. meh, love him and all, but it doesn’t work with the original Captain America unless they do Red, White, & Black and you know that’s not going to really work as a lead in to Avengers.
Too many of the more classic black comic book heroes are cheap exploitation of, well, black people: Luke Cage, Black Panther- seriously, Black Panther?!
Maybe have Will Smith lead an X-Factor movie as Forge or anchor an Age of Apocalypse trilogy as Bishop. The
This has already been debunked. Will Smith is not Capt America.

I’m not racist but… I mean some of my best friends are black (Asian counts right?)… and I mean… I’m very open minded and liberal…

@Chris- Wow, good call. I only watched like, three episodes of “Middleman” before kinda trailing off. Did the season end well?
Very well. No news has come out on whether or not it will be picked up for more, but no one’s really hodling out much hope- ABC Family shortened their original order as it is. It’s a real shame that show ended up on such a bad network, it might have found some traction over on SciFi Channel- not that the SciFi Channel ahs been known to make good decisions all the time-, at least there it may have found its audience; most people avoid the ABC Family value because, well, it’s the “family” channel, but most people that usually watch the “family” channel won’t watch Middle Man because it has no business being on the “family” channel.
I can only hope that some adventurous exec out there says “hey, you know that money we had earmarked for Mosquito Invasion 4 and Boa Vs. Anaconda Vs. One-Eyed Trouser Snake 4? Well, let’s just use that to pick up this Middle Man show, it’s pretty good!”
Not going to hold my breath though.
All that said, I’m just going to say again- because repetition is how people remember- Matt Keeslar is Captain America, so there.
