Wes Craven Signs to Direct Scream 4
Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010
Wes Craven is back in the director’s chair for the Kevin Williamson scripted sequel.
Variety confirms that director Wes Craven has signed on to direct Scream 4, from a script by original series scribe Kevin Williamson. The film will go into production this spring with original cast members Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox and David Arquette. It is set for release on April 12th 2011.
The sequel will take place in the original film’s setting of Woodsboro, ten years after the events of 2000’s Scream 3. Williams describes it as an “ensemble” which will introduce several new characters. Scream 4 will reference modern horror films, covering topics such as Asian remakes, PG-13 horror, vampires, Shyamalan-ian twists, and even torture porn. It is said to be the first film of a new trilogy masterminded by Williamson.
The fact that Wes Craven signed on gives me a ton of hope for this film. I love the original and enjoy the sequels to varying degrees, so if they can make a film even half as fun without retreading on the same story and themes, I’m 100% on board. Scream 4 is officially one of my most anticipated films of 2011.
If I had to guess? Sidney is now either a psychiatrist or a teacher (for easy connection to the new teenaged “ensemble”), Deputy Dewey is now SHERIFF Dewey, and Gale Weathers is a mystery novelist or true crime author of moderate fame. I do hope that the serial killer in this one drops the ghostface motiff and does something a littleĀ different. I think that mask should be retired with the previous trilogy. Let this one stand on its own merit.

Then, Yorick Brown's long journey through an Earth populated only by women comes to its dramatic, unexpected conclusion.
Mixed emotions on this one.
On the one hand, Scream is my favourite horror movie and I love the sequels so more stories in this world is theoretically appealing. The are just enjoyable horror films that you can have a lot of fun with if you are a fan of the genre.
On the other hand, I’m a bit hesitant about another sequel because it works so well as a trilogy and the third one just capped the story off nicely. Do we really need more? But the fact that those three core cast have signed on, as well as it being penned by creator Williamson and director Craven, I have hope that they will make sure the project is worthwhile.
I was particularly surprised and pleased that you report Neve Campbell is on board because I had this strange notion that she wasn’t keen on it and had refused, but I have no clue where I go this idea from. Besides, you just can’t do Scream without Sidney.
In any case, I will be super keen to see this when it finally hits the cinema screen. I like your idea about a new take on the mask Scott. That could be really cool.
High anticipation!!!
Be sure to give the latest GeekiN (#102) a listen, as we discuss the very issues you are talking about here.
Cool. Will do. I am currently a little behind in my GeekiN listening. I’m only part way thru ep 100 but I’m loving it! Will let you know more thoughts when I get to ep 102.
I love the original Scream, and the sequels are a lot of fun if not quite “classic” like the first one. I am cautiously optimistic for a fourth movie, but only because a lot of the original people are still involved, especially Williamson.
