Terry Gilliam Thinks Johnny Depp’s New Movies Suck.
Thursday, August 6th, 2009
So this bit of news comes from New York Magazine, the link to the article can be found below.Apparently, famed film director Terry Gilliam (The Fisher King, Brazil, Time Bandits) was interviewed by Drew McWeeny over at Hitflix and during their chat, Gilliam expressed frsutration with the state of colleague and one-time collaberator Jonnhy Depp’s career.
“He’d better start making some good films … I’m not a great fan of Public Enemies, because I think [Michael Mann's] a fucking extraordinary filmmaker, but personally I didn’t think Johnny had enough room to act … He’s making so much money….It’s like, ‘Come on. You’ve got the power to make some really good films happen. Why are you doing this shit?’”
This is very strange. Yeah, Public Enemies was a dissapointment considering all the huge talent involved with the project, but Sweeney Todd? Awesome movie. Pherhaps he was referring to Depp’s somewhat curious choice of upcoming projects, inlucing A fourth Pirates movie, Alice in Wonderland, The Lone Ranger and a Dark Shadows Movie.

Gilliam is like Spike Lee in a way; whenever he has a new movie coming out. His marketing stratergy is shitting on other filmmakers. When The Brothers Grimm was coming out in 2005, I remember reading an Entertainment Weekly article where Gilliam bemoaned the recent work of Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg; that is to say, The Island and War of the Worlds. Could this Depp hate just be Gilliam blowing steam to promote The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassasuss?
Wait, isn’t Johnny Depp in that movie?

Well Rusty James thinks Terry Gilliam’s movies suck.
Depp’s been pretty supportive of Gillaim over the years, including a notorious trek into the jungle to film a movie that was never finished because of Gilliam’s incompetence.
I love a director with a big ego. I love cheap shots against Michael Bay. But Gilliam’s been lost in the wilderness for a decade. And I don’t even like his classics. Brazil is a tedious mess, and it’s literally unfathomable to me that anyone likes Fischer King.
Well, I’m not a fan of bashing other people but I will agree the man has a point. Was a time before the first Pirates when Depp wasn’t exactly the commander he was and was making these secretly brilliant movies and no one in a million years thought he was bankable. In fact, for many years he was considered slightly poisonous. Now that he has all this power and command… what exactly has he been doing? More Pirates movies? The Secret Window? Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? Finding Neverland was… okay, but it wasn’t exactly the best thing ever. Just saying, he could be picking better projects.
Though, personally, I’m surprised (and glad actually) that they aren’t trying to use Heath Ledger’s memory to sell this movie. (At least that I’ve seen. I’m sure they will soon…)
Also, Rusty dude… two words: 12 Monkeys. You don’t go around hating on 12 Monkeys or the man who brought us that little slice of brilliance. I will defend that movie within an inch of my life.
Dude, lay off Gilliam, the mans a master, Brazil is an amazingpiece of work and The Holy Grail is one of the finest comedies ever made. I love the Fisher King, I love Gilliam and whilst not all his films are great (The brothers Grimm) there are always some nice touches from the man to make them watchable.
Sweeney Todd was horrid.
I enjoyed the Pirates, but I can see what Gilliam’s getting at; Depp’s turning into the defacto figure head of Hot Topics everywhere, and continuing to star in all of Tim Burton’s movies isn’t helping him do anything new and interesting.
Mostly I don’t like Depp’s latest stuff because I can’t stand Burton any more.
Public Enemies was just kind of ok.
Okay, I LOVE Fisher King, its one my favorite movies. I’m really curious as to why you hated Sweeney Todd. I think Gilliam is being kind of a dick. I mean, his last two movies haven’t been that great (Tideland, Brothers Grimm.) And everyone’s saying Depp should be picking better projects; okay, which ones? Should Depp have replaced Emile Hirsh on Into the Wild? Would he have been better suited to play Randy the Ram instead of Mickey Rourke in The Wrestler? Even when Depp’s in movies that aren’t that great, like Public Enemies, he’s almost always interesting to watch.
I can’t fault Depp for being loyal to Burton because Burton’s given him his two best roles; Ed Wood and Edward Scissorhands.
Depp coulda been a GREAT Tony Stark. I would also love to see him play Winston Niles Rumfoord in an adaptation of Sirens of Titan.
And I for one wouldn’t mind more Pirates movies cause I think they’re all great.
You think the Pirates movies are great, I’ll give youthe first one but the 2nd two are some of the worst excuses for blockbusters I’ve ever seen, just films for the sake of films. I do agree though, he would have been a great Stark. Ed Wood and Sweeney Todd are his best performances to my mind, I also really liked Cry Baby.
I am baffled by the hatred of Pirates 3. The film is very inventive filled with many brilliant touches and very memorable use of visual effects. Depp continues to be awesome. Jack Sparrow really is the modern Indiana Jones.
I like that it’s a fantasy that’s not like all that Harry Potter and The Magic Ring movies. Those films are like later Star Trek. They’re so burdened by their own precious mythology that there’s no room for fun. The Fellowship of the Magic Ring movies are like visiting your grandparents. You know you have to go… but god, it’s such a choir.
Pirates feels like anything can happen.
I would actually say part 3 is my favorite.
And another thing. I can’t remember titles to movies anymore. Harry Potter’s magic Whatever. Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Two Kings. No Old Man Country. Transformables: Roflmao. Whatever. When I buy tickets for these movies I just go up to the window say words randomly until they give me a ticket: “Falling Salvationator Transformed Girlfriend Experience Trek”. That’s how I got a ticket for Hurt Locker.
But Pirates 3 is just called Worlds End. Nice and easy.
I too am a fan of the Pirates sequels. I thought they goofy and visually gonzo and I loved how the world had no rules. Its funny, I always said Parts 2 and 3 seemd like what would happend if you gave Terry Gilliam 200 million and asked him to make a summer blockbuster
Depp should man up and finally do Rum Diary before he’s too old.
He just got done filmming it actually. Guess he’s a man now.
