S. Darko Trailer up!
Saturday, February 21st, 2009
The trailer for the straight-to-DVD Donnie Darko sequel has arrived.
The trailer is currently only available at www.sdarko.com and not able to be embedded ( but you can find a whole bunch of fan-made trailers on Youtube).
If I can say one thing for it; the movie definitely looks to be a cut above most straight-to-DVD sequels, at least in terms of production value. But on the negative side, nothing I saw looked like anything other than “Donnie Darko, but bigger!” I’m worried that the film will use all of the tricks of the first film, it just won’t have any of the resonance.
But the trailer did make the film look better than I had thought it to be, so I may end up renting it after all.

Book of the Month
Y The Last Man Vol. 5In this final Deluxe Edition hardcover collecting Y #49-60, Yorick and Agent 355 prepare for their ultimate quest to reunite the last man with his lost love, while the person, people or thing behind the disaster that wiped out half of humanity is revealed. Then, Yorick Brown's long journey through an Earth populated only by women comes to its dramatic, unexpected conclusion.
I’ll start off with the one and only good thing I have to say about this film. Here it goes…for a straight to dvd movie it looks OK, not a bad trailer.
Now for the bad:
Why are they even bothering with this? Donnie Darko is a one time only amazing film which does not need a sequel. Everyone knows that it will be no comparission to Donnie Darko. I am in no rush to buy it (if at all) but I’ll pick it up in a few months when they need to drop the price to £3 just so they can shift the copies of it off the shelves.
Done.
Hmmmm….I really like Donnie Darko, and this trailer looked fairly interesting, so I’ll probably rent it or something. It certainly looks much better than what I was expecting it to be.
I like the fact that it doesn’t look like it’s trying to be Donnie Darko with a different character.
I completely disagree, it looks like the exact same movie with a different character.
It kind of looks like they wanted to make Donnie, but with “more things happening”. Ill see it, and probly enjoy it.
If for nothing else than to see Chuck Bass in something other than GG
Yeah…it defintely looks like its trying to be exactly like Donnie Darko.
I thought the trailer looked good. No matter what it does I doubt this movie will manage to be more of an insult to the original than the bloated and boring director’s cut.
S. Darko is Samantha Darko, it’s Donnie’s little sister from the first movie, they even went so far as to get the same actor.
This explains why she sees a lot of similar things, i.e. Frank the Bunny. She’s going through what Donnie did, she may even find out what happened to him. So before anyone else says it’s Donnie Darko with a different character consider the fact that is could just be a family curse to save the world that now rests on Samantha’s shoulders. Now that would be awesome….
I WILL buy this.
And I will borrow it from you
Wow, Donnie Darko is one movie that absolutely doesn’t need a sequel. It felt so unique and a world writer/director Richard Kelly created. I probably will see this, but my expectations are very, very low after seeing this trailer.
And I ask, why? Donnie Darko does NOT need a sequel. Period. Not gonna see it on principal.
I have a feeling that girl’s sole purpose in the film is to look adorable in a tank top and short jean skirt. I know it’s the same actress- but still.
I’ll rent it out of curiosity but that’s about it.
I believe the company that put this out is the same one who did the recent adaptation of Choke and the Dead Like Me movie. (Or at least they were all on display at the same booth at the con the other week) If it IS (too lazy to google around right now) I wonder if they are trying to make a name for themselves as a company that does direct-to-dvd movies with good quality, which is an intriguing endeavor that at the very least has me curious.
At the very least it doesn’t have the same cheap feel to it that most direct to dvd’s have.
Okay nevermind what I said- those three films have evidently nothing to do with each other. I really should start imdb-ing before I open my big mouth.
Also Choke wasn’t direct to DVD
Yeah, I realized that too *snort* it just had a very limited release that I thought it was. Like I said, I need to start looking things up before I say them. LOL
But now I’m convinced someone SHOULD start a company that makes quality direct-to-dvd stuff. Anyone with me?
I wouldnt mind being on the board of the Australian branch of this company. Lets take this thing international.
you gotta wonder, if this company is making such good films, why aren’t they going to the big screen
actually it’s increasingly difficult for independent films to get distribution. Independent theaters are on the wane. And audiences are reluctant to take chances on movies anymore. As Ebert once pointed out, people would rather see a movie that they know is going to be bad than take a chance on a film that could be good.
A company that scouted good movies (or maybe even produced their own) and circumvented the theater system could be great.
Whatever you think of Choke (I read the book, the movie seemed to hit all the major points. Sam Rockwell was well cast. Sort of a tacked on happy ending that I didn’t appreciate) it definitely would’ve gotten a theatrical release just a few years ago.
Oh yeah, I also meant to add that to really be successful they’d have to skip DtDVD and go straight to online streaming like Netflix does.
This film’s really good.
