Raimi And Maguire’s Spidey Senses Tingle Again!
Friday, September 5th, 2008
News dropped today that Spider-Man vets Tobey Maguire and Sam Raimi have been locked in by Sony to return for back to back productions of Spidey 4 & 5.
No word yet on Kirstin Dunst, but it is understood that Mary Jane Watson will be featured in the film and Sony isn’t looking to recast the character.
The film’s villain has yet to be announced, but Sony has hinted that “once you find out who the villain is, you’ll know who’s playing it”. Most people are assuming The Lizard due to Dylan Baker’s portrayal of the character’s alter ego, Dr. Curt Conners, in the second and third films, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Bruce Campbell playing ol’ Fishbowl-head himself, Mysterio.
Principal Photography will begin in Fall of 2009 for a release in May 2011. The fourth and fifth film will be shot simultaneously to both cut down costs and make certain that everyone involved stays together.
Could all of this lead to an obvious Sinister Six appearence in Spider-Man 6? Only time will tell.
A long… long time.

Then, Yorick Brown's long journey through an Earth populated only by women comes to its dramatic, unexpected conclusion.
I’ve been waiting for the Lizard. I think Dylan Baker’s a great actor. Can’t wait to see some more Bruce Campbell as well.
Damn, I was kind of hoping for some new blood. But this hardly qualifies as bad news
I hope they learned their lesson about trying to pack too many storylines into one movie.. If they did I hope its Mysterio as I love Bruce..but I’d be happy with The Lizard as well.
BBBOOOOOOO i want a new spidey
I agree with TNN, not bad news but I was hoping for a new start with a new Spidey.
And Gwen Stacey (not Howard) without Mary Jane or a new Mary Jane.
I’m not sure the Lizard would be able to carry a whole movie
I hate to be mean to Dylan Baker, but I think they should recast The Lizard. I just don’t know if he can pull off a major baddie. I could see David Tennant in the role. Actually, I like Scott and Ben’s idea of having Kraven( Dwayne Johnson) and Spidey both chasing the Lizard. It’d be a diffrent kind of story than the films usually have. Maybe Mysterio could be a one scene brawl at the very beginning.
Also, I think having The Lizard as a villain gives Rami the oppurtunity to back to his horror roots. I can just imagine a whole scene where we’re seeing things from the Lizard’s perspective as he’s prowling through the city. If Spiderman 4 could be a whole movie in that same tone as the hospital scene is Spiderman 2, I’d be a happy fella. Honestly, I think it should be a smaller story than 3 was. No more Saviour Spidey that everyone loves and adores.
I also like the idea of having Scorpion involved in some way. That way you get this sort of animal focus. With Kraven being the hunter (and Dwayne Johnson would be a terrible idea, I don’t think he could pass as a Russian very well at all. I personally like Gerard Butler for the role.)
The Black Cat would be a good one, too, especially considering there hasn’t been a female villain of any kind yet (and I know she’s not “technically” a villain, but you know what I mean). I know this sounds like a lot of content for one movie, but I’m not suggesting they all be in one film. Plus, I’m assuming that Spidey 4 and 5 will have somewhat of a connected plot.
They definitely should not recast Dylan Baker. That would be an absolute slap in the face. Besides, he just has to play Curt Conners, and he’s already been doing that for two films. The Lizard would almost definitely be CGI. He wouldn’t have to play that role at all.
But I’m with Jack in thinking that regardless of who plays the role, The Lizard is NOT a villain that can carry an entire film. He can barely carry a 20min cartoon episode. There needs to be more to the film than that, and I think having Kraven as the main antagonist would be great.
I actually like having a villain who isn’t connected to the Lizard as well, like Mysterio, Spidey is trying to track him down but the Lizard is something that keeps getting in his way so the finale for movie 4 deals with a Lizard showdown sort of thing with Connors family (as they always are involved), Mysterio’s plot could be carried onto number 5.
Hey, If Baker can pull it off, by all means let him do it. It’s just that he’s only been in like, two scenes for every movie and I just don’t know personally how we’ll pull of the tortured scientist. But if Rami has faith in him, then so do I. I was picturing Johnson’s Kraven as kind of a publicity-hungry, American asshole who makes a big show out of promising New York that he’ll catch the Lizard. Imagine David Blaine if he was a hunter instead of a “magicican.” Maybe he gets frustrated with Spiderman getting in his way and like, gets video footage of Spidey protecting the Lizard from Kraven to get the people of NYC agaisnt him. Then maybe eventually Kraven starts gunning for Spiderman.
Gerard Butler would be a great choice for a serious Kraven, but in my mind he was more over-the-top. Kinda like Gaston from Beauty and the Beast
Or Captain Hammer (jk)
@TNN
Aaahhh…. I totally see that now. In that instance Johnson’s a great choice. BUT, if that was the Kraven they went with, then Mysterio wouldn’t have much of a place in the franchise considering that’s sort of what his thing is. But I’d be totally fine with that version of Kraven. Makes sense to me.
Hmm…I think Mysterio could still fit in. Both he and Kraven are over-the-top charecters, but Mysterio actually chooses to be a super villain, while (in my version at least) Kraven is just an antagonist, at least until the last half of the movie where he tries to kill Spiderman. And to me, part of the fun in the comics is Spiderman making fun of these ridiculous bad guys, so if they’re a bit goofier than Doc Ock or Sandman, I’d be fine with it.
Booooo-ring. Raimi’s next project should be Anything But Spider-man. Is he even shooting Drag Me To Hell?
And I would love to see Joseph Gordon Levitt as PP. Or Patrick Fuggit. Or just anyone but Toby McGuire.
Dylan Baker is great though. I don’t know how anyone could think he can’t play a villain. He can’t play anything but villains. I think he once stared as a dad in a sitcom, who ever cast him was out of their mind.
You guys cast David Tennent for everything.
Drag Me to Hell should only take like, six weeks at the most to film. I think JGL is too cool to play Peter Parker, I like Tobey I just wish he was snarkier.
I seriosuly have not seen anything Dylan Baker is in other than Spiderman.
Also, I think that in some weird way, Raimi IS the new blood this series needs. I’m sure he realizes how sloppy part 3 was and now I guess he feels he has to make up for it. You know what’s more exciting than a visually inventive filmmaker? A visually inventive filmmaker with something to prove.
I actually like Spider-man III but I’m tired of Raimi’s take on the material. It’s stale. Half the fun of this stuff is to get to see a new vision for an old character. That’s why it’s exciting when they swap out creative teams on comics.
Check out Dylan Baker in Happiness.
They do have a new screenwriter. This will be the first Spiderman since the first one where niether the story nor the script will be done by Sam Raimi.
I like the idea of a reboot, but this series doesn’t need one yet, I hate the idea of just if you make one bad movie we suddenly have to go right back from scratch, it’s just a cop out.
it did work incredibly well for Batman but Batman and Robin had gone beyond the point of no return, Spiderman hasn’t really done that for me. Hell I don’t even really think we need to reboot Superman, it was one movie, one in my oppinion isn’t as terrible as most people make it out to be, I’d like to just hear what Singer had planned for a follow up because Singer is still a great film maker, I’m sure he’d be able to salvage what most people call a wreck, or hell just get another director on it because honestly it doesn’t have to be a reboot.
@ Jack
Superman Returns wasn’t one movie, though. It was the fifth in the old Superman movie franchise (or third since I guess they weren’t counting 3 and 4). We’ve never had a Superman reboot (in film) and I think it’s about time. The old Christopher Reeve movies are severely outdated and I think that was the biggest problem with SR, it was just a love letter to those movies instead of a complete film of its own. It turned out more like a big budget fan-film.
They were never talking about completely rebooting Spider-Man, just putting a new team on what already existed. I don’t have a problem with that at all, but I’m also fine with the old team returning with a new screenwriter. That was my biggest problem with the films, it was never Raimi or Maguire per say. It all starts with the script, the foundation, and with a new writer attached, I’m fine with everyone returning.
Though, I’d be very happy if they recast Dunst or removed her character entirely. As it was, the Parker/Watson relationship was getting pretty stale.
Singer is an over praised mediocre film maker. His only good film is Xmen 2.
And X Men…and The Usual Suspects…And Valkyrie from what the early reviews have said. Honestly I think Superman was his biggest misstep. And I agree that X2 is best film as well.
I kind of agree with Rusty… Singer isn’t the amazing filmmaker is made out to be. I watch Usual Suspects for the first time a few months ago and I really wasn’t that impressed. X-Men is only “good”. Valkyrie looks pretty good as well, but the jury’s still out. X2 was fantastic. Superman Returns, technically, was gorgeous IMHO. It was the script that was garbage.
The problem with X-Men is that Singer is clearly uncomfortable making a super hero film (”what’s a magneto?”).
The problem with Usual Suspects (possibly one of the most over praised films ever) is that it’s the most generic crime that tries to save itself with a twist at the end. The twist doesn’t even follow from the film.
Valkyrie? Seriously? Is that movie even completed. All I know about it is that its been endlessly post poned. I’m sure it will be very safe and “competent” (read: boring). In other words, it’ll be a Bryan Singer film.
Frankly, I prefer Ratner.
Jesus guys, Usual Suspects is a great film, definitely Singer’s best, but I’d say that was more the screenplay than the directing.
I like the idea of Black Cat being in the next movie.
“Jesus guys, Usual Suspects is a great film, definitely Singer’s best, but I’d say that was more the screenplay than the directing.”
I completely agree with that statement. The story is definitely a big part of what makes The Usual Suspects a classic. Another part is the all around good to great performances from the entire cast. The directing is okay, but it’s nothing special.
I also remember liking Apt Pupil, but it has been years since I’ve seen that film and I don’t remember much from it.
As for Spider-Man, I’ll wait to see what the film is before I judge it too much. I kind of wish Sam Raimi would move on to other things and not turn into George Lucas, doing the same movies forever… I was also kind of hoping they would get somebody different to play Spidey as I wanted to see a different take on the character from what Tobey Maguire has done.
To me, generic is someone like Ratner, or Tim Story, or the guys that make those late summer scary movies. They shoot every scene the exact way you would expect them to be shot and tell every story the eaxct way you would expect it to be told? Was Superman Returns the movie we thought it would be? Hell no. Does that make it bad? Possibly. Does it make it generic? Defintely not. The same goes for Brian Singer. You can say he makes weird decsions, but you defintely can’t say he’s “generic.” Btw, Valkarie comes out December 26th.
