‘Nightmare’ Redux Gets a Greenlight
Friday, December 12th, 2008
Producers Brad Fuller and Andrew Form announced today that Platinum Dunes’ remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street has been greenlit for production.
Originally announced over the summer, it was unsure if Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) and Amityville Horror (2005)’s trio of producers (Fuller, Form, and Michael Bay) would be involved, but apparently the Ts have been crossed. “It’s our next movie,” confirmed Form, “hopefully shooting this spring.”
Writer Wesley Strick (Cape Fear) is attached to pen the script which is intended to re-imagine the the serial killing dream master for a new audience. “It’s like what we’re doing to Friday the 13th,” says Fuller. “It’s not Freddy cracking jokes. We want to make a horrifying movie. The concept is so scary, don’t fall asleep or you’ll die. This guy gets you when you’re most vulnerable, in your sleep. We love that. That’s the basis of the movie. It’ll be most similar to the first one but in terms of kills and dreams we’ll borrow from the entire series.”
Shooting is expected to take place in the Chicago suburbs.
Fuller and Form also confirmed that they are looking for someone new to don the red and green sweater (or whatever the new Freddy will end up wearing…), but they hope for Robert Englund to appear in the film in another role.
I say Ben Foster as Freddy and Englund as his violently drunk father. What do you guys think?

I think Ben Foster could do a great job.
I can’t wait to see how this turns out. I am a much bigger Nightmare fan than I am a Friday 13th fan. I enjoy some of the Jason movies, but I’ve always liked Freddy more. That said, the trailers for the new Friday 13th remake look awesome. Hopefully the movie turns out to be surprisingly good, and they can do the same for Nightmare.
Ben Foster is my number one choice as well.
This has the potential to be great. I always loved the concept of Freddy
I really like Ben Foster but is he old enough? He’s 28; I guess that’s old enough to be a child molester (assuming they go in that direction).
The good news, for me, is that the remake of Cape Fear was excellent imho and the writer of that is writing this.
I love freddy films as much as the next guy…. but there is already like 15,000 of them. I think it’s high time we stop remaking horror films and spend all that time and energy on something fresh and new.
Why? Its a great story, let’s tell it again with some fresh eyes
well that’s easy…. go out and rent it.
the originals are great. It was a product of its own time. I just think Hollywood needs something new and fresh in the sci-fi horror genre… we’ve been redoing and messing up too many classics lately.
I always think that if you have a good idea for continuing a story thats great, I’ll be in line to see it probably. But now when they hit a wall they just go for a remake (usually soulless ones).
But take a movie like Black Christmas. It is a classic, the pioneer of the slasher genre (before they relied on gore instead of tension and story). in 2006 they took it made it more graphic, took out the character development, replaced it with hollow characters that dress skimpier and are less likable as though people wouldn’t watch a movie where you cared about the characters. also gave it a back story that misses the point of the original (the orignal ending depended on there not being back story). It was like they had no respect for it and just decided to trade off of its cult status. I’ve yet to see a horror remake that was equal to the original, I feel as though its because they don’t care about the material its just easier to make money off of something people know. after the last chainsaw movie I swore off remakes. but I will still go for some sequels.
I believe there are exceptions though ie: I would love to see an accurate Dracula some day.
I’ll be there with bell’s on, I think its been long overdue to breath some new life into this series and as good as Robert Englund as freddy I would love to see somebody new give a fresh take on the character.
