John Barrowman Cast As Captain America?!
Thursday, July 24th, 2008
According to Superherohype, John Barrowman, Torchwood’s Capain Jack Harkness, was just asked moments ago at the San Diego Comic-Con panel if there was any possibility that he would be playing Captain America in the upcoming Marvel Studios feature film.
He smiled and said that he’d love to play the character and that Captain America has always been his favorite comic book superhero. But, notion did not seem to take him by surprise and he ended up admitting there had been discussions with his agents and meetings on that very issue.
The First Avenger: Captain America is currently scheduled for a May 6, 2011 release.

Y The Last Man Vol. 5In this final Deluxe Edition hardcover collecting Y #49-60, Yorick and Agent 355 prepare for their ultimate quest to reunite the last man with his lost love, while the person, people or thing behind the disaster that wiped out half of humanity is revealed. Then, Yorick Brown's long journey through an Earth populated only by women comes to its dramatic, unexpected conclusion.

Could this be any better? I think not.
The only other actor I had ever had in mind for Captain America was Marc Blucas (Riley Finn), but this is vastly superior casting. Just awesome AWESOME news.
Holy Hell. This would make me so happy.
While it sounds like a good idea to me…..I’ll wait for an official casting announcement to get excited. Rumors like this don’t always pan out.
@Brad: In fact, rumors like this USUALLY don’t pan out. However, they sure are a lot of fun to discuss. So in that regard, this is a good direction if they go that way.
I love me some Capn Jack… I hope this happens.. (I believe Marc Blucas could’ve done it well as well.. but John seems like he will have a better range).. I also think if he hadn’t of played Cyclops James Marsden would’ve been a good choice.. Anyways.. I can’t wait for this movie..
Oh holy hell yes! If only this were true…
I’d be getting a Cap’ who could sing and dance! I honestly love John Barrowman in anything he does. I had never considered him before (mostly because I’d never think he’d do it. He seems pretty content doing BBC stuff and musicals on the side) but now thinking of it? He’d probably make a really good Cap’. He also has the look of someone from the 40’s you know? That’s the problem with most actors nowadays. A lot of them have a very modern look- it’s hard to find someone who’s face and persona seem like they’d fit in in the 40’s. I’d LOVE for this to be true.
Speaking of, I just ordered a copy of John Barrowman’s book just out of curiosity for it. Has anyone read it? Is it any good?
Gotta say though. A Scottish Captain America is pretty ironic. :)
I have never watched Dr. Who, so I don’t know anything about Joihn Barrowman, but it could work. He may be a little too pretty to play Cap, but as long as he’s a good actor and looks the part (he’ll have to put on some serious muscle mass) I wouldn’t be opposed to it. My choice as soon as I heard they were making a Captain America movie was Peter Krause from Six Feet Under. He’s rugged, intense, has an all-American face with a great superhero chin, has a bit of a dark side, and he could pull off the 40s WWII veteran thing with no problem. We’ll see.
sorry about the typo
Hal: Watch an episode of Torchwood, because he does come off as “pretty” in a lot of his publicity shots but in that show (and Dr. Who) he isn’t nearly as much. He’s usually not lit that way, and his hair doesn’t have that “perfectly mussed up” look to it. Plus, he wears a WW2 coat and he really looks comfortable in that period. If you just want to see one episode watch his first one (a two parter) “The Empty Child” and “The Doctor Dances.” In that he comes off more just classicaly handsome in the ‘tall/dark/handsome” sense and very heroic.
I caveat this with: I am a huge friggin Captain America fan. He is my favorite superhero. I mentioned it on the comics to film podcast: if life were fair I’d be making this movie. (I know exactly how I’d make it too.)
He’s Scottish!? Wow. That clinches it, this guy’s a great actor. On Dr. Who/Torchwood he’s just radiates “American.”
To be fair, he has lived in America for a large portion of his life and generally speaks with an American accent in interviews and TV appearances.
I hadn’t thought of him for the role. He’d probably be alright.
Marc Blucas would never happen.
Of the Hollywood set, the only two I like for the role are Matt Damon and Aaron Eckhart.
Yeahhh…He was making a JOKE. Dude. I was there.
@Genjashade: I imagine that the people that originally reported the story were there too. It’s likely one of those things that could be taken differently. Still, it makes for a good discussion, either way.
I was there too in the audience.
I think he was taking it lightly but he wasn’t making a joke. He knows it’s too far in the future to take anything seriously, but I wouldn’t be surprised at ‘talks’ and I am absolutely certain that he wants it bad. As he noted in the same panel, he’s a giant geek and a huge comic book fan.
He’s done things other than Torchwood and Doctor Who (though, really, get over the first season of Torchwood and watch him in “The Doctor Dances” episode of DW). He does/has done a lot of stage work.
@Genjadeshade
Yeahhh… I was reporting the NEWS. Dude. I’m not the source.
I just saw this bit of news and decided to post it here because I know we have a lot of DW and TW fans on this site. I just thought you’d all appreciate hearing about it. Just like everything else on the site. Sheesh.
@Chris
I’m well aware Marc Blucas would never happen, he’s a nobody. He was just in “Meet Dave”. I think that pretty much sums up his career at the moment.
Matt Damon is way too short for Captain America and Aaron Eckhart JUST played Two Face so I don’t think he’d get it.
Honestly, I really hope they give it to Barrowman. It would be yet another perfect casting by Marvel Studios.
So what if it was a joke? Everyone I’ve passed this rumor onto has done a headcock and than was all “OMG… that would work!” So I think it’s a good supposition for the role if nothing else.
just love the idea of john barrowman being the all american superhero,even although hes scottish.wish all the guys in scotland (or america )looked as good as he does.
