“Horton” Director to Tackle Jonah Hex
Tuesday, January 6th, 2009
Jimmy Hayward a former Pixar animater and director of the animated feature Horton Hears a Who, has been brought in to director the DC comic adaptation of Jonah Hex.
Josh Brolin is already attached to star in the movie, and the script was written by former directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, who left the project over creative differences. The studio, which hopes to put the movie into production in March or April, picked Hayward from a short list of directors to get the project back on track. Hayward made his directorial debut with 2008’s “Horton,” which grossed $154.5 million at the domestic boxoffice.
The character of Hex, known for having the right side of his face disfigured and wearing a Confederate army uniform, was a rough-and-tumble gunslinger and part-time bounty hunter whose adventures always ended in blood. One incarnation of his comic book series saw the Western genre combined with supernatural elements, and it’s this aspect that was featured in Neveldine and Taylor’s script. The studio will likely keep the script, though it’s expected that Hayward will put his stamp on it.

That seems like an odd choice to me. I wonder if he has any experience outside of animation. Don’t get me wrong, a lot of the skills necessary for directing an animated movie should translate just fine into live-action, but I wonder what kind of technical skills he has. It makes me wonder who else was on the “short list”…
Andy Fickman and McG
According to his IMDB, he’s never worked on anything live action. So… I’ll be surprised if this film ends up being anything more than decent.
I don’t know. If he has a good team around him, and he is good with communicating the look he wants to get, I think it could turn out pretty good. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
Random but true. The other director for Horton, is the father of my brother’s friend.
