Hellboy: The TV Series?
Saturday, September 6th, 2008
This is a very interesting rumor that came about due to a throwaway comment made by Universal production prexy Donna Langley.
Hellboy II director Guillermo del Toro is apparently booked with projects through 2017 with projects such as his current adaptation of The Hobbit, remakes of both Frankenstein and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, as well as several others.
But del Toro is currently awaiting word on whether Universal will allow him to finish off his Hellboy trilogy. Hellboy II: The Golden Army fell just short of blockbuster status in the US , but performed very well overseas.
“I think they’ll decide when the last euro hits the piggybank,” said del Toro. “We laid the groundwork to have a magnificent third act. I’d like to return to an action franchise with 60-year-old actor Ron Perlman, because he’ll be scratching at that age when I get to it.”
What does this have to do with a possible television series you ask?
According to Langley, the studio is interested and may work with del Toro to add a TV series and online segments to broaden the following before making the film series finale.
Like I said… it’s not much at all. But very interesting nevertheless.

If its an animated series in the style of those Tad Stone DVDs, I’d be estatic. If it’s live action…I dunno how I’d feel about that
An animated show would make it much easier for the original cast to be involved. Doing a couple voiceover sessions is a lot easier (time wise) than committing to a live-action series.
But an animated series wouldn’t help with Universal’s goal broaden the fanbase before the third film. Nobody watches cartoon (other than Family guy or Simpsons-like shows) except people like you and I. So I’m about 95% sure that they must be meaning a live action series.
That is absolutely true. I really doubt that they would do a cartoon for this. I just wonder how good a show would be if they couldn’t keep the original cast, especially the main three: Ron Perlman, Doug Jones, and Selma Blair. I just think it would be hard to “broaden the fanbase” with a show that shares nothing with its movie counterparts. I would love to see a Hellboy TV show, but it would have to be done right.
