Harry Potter and the Dastardly Delay
Wednesday, August 13th, 2008
Yahoo! Movies is reporting:
Warner Bros. has decided to delay the release date of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince from November 2008 to July 17th, 2009. Why? Apparently, they want to take advantage of the lucrative summer season. More than likely, they also want to take advantage of an overall weak year of movies thanks to the writers’ strike last year. The first part of The Deathly Hallows is scheduled tentatively for November 2010. An interesting turn for a move for a movie that has to be dangerously close to being complete. This is a similar move to Paramount bumping Star Trek to next summer, even though it is reportedly still going to be finished this holiday season.

This makes sense buisness wise, and it’ll give me something to look foward to next summer, but daaaaaamnn.
I know. I had the date booked to see the midnight release at IMax. Guess I will have to wait along with everybody else.
Ultimately, it isn’t a big deal. We are going to have to wait a while for the final two movies to complete. So it is either wait extra time now, and hope the next movie can do a little better, or wait later and have the movie under perform a bit.
You know its funny, but I wasn’t exactly anticipating this film anyway… not to say that I wasn’t looking forward to it AT ALL… but I don’t know I just wasn’t for whatever reason. Maybe my excitement will grow more by next summer
While it sucks that we have to wait to see it, I understand why WB is pushing it back. This will give them a big film in the summer when they might not have had anything otherwise. Maybe this will give the filmmakers extra time to really tweak the movie and make it special.
Oh, I also wanted to say that I think this sucks a little bit because the HP movies are much more “winter” movies than they are summer movies. They just seem to fit better into November or December than they do in the summer months.
To TheDoctor:
It could just be that they really haven’t hyped up this movie yet. I mean its goddamn Harry Potter, do they really need to hype it at all. I don’t care what happens its going to make a billion dollars anyway. I too hadn’t really been anticipating this movie, but then again I am still kind of in summer movie mode, I hadn’t switched to holiday movies yet.
I hate it and like it at the same time. It seems, compared to this year, that next year will be a bit lame, so at least this will add to next year’s movies.
But yeah, damn, I was really looking forward to this movie later this year.
I am actually really pissed off about this. If they decided it would be better for the studio to release it next year instead of this year, they should have made that decision before any promotion was done. I see a trailer that says November, I want to see that movie in November. We won’t have any good movies next summer because of the writer’s strike, and so they delay the biggest franchise they have just so they can have a fall back movie to generate income? As a fan I can’t believe they would do that to me, my wife, and all the other people out there who are waiting on this movie. Whatever their actual reasons for delaying it, I’m still angry that they would at all, unless it was something to do with it not being finished yet, which is not the case.
