Thursday, January 29th, 2009
The Chronicles of Narnia film series, recently given the axe by Walt Disney Pictures, has found a new home at 20th Century Fox.The next chapter of the Narnia series, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader will now be financed by Fox 2000 (with some help from Walden Media) with a budget of $140 Million, much less than the first two Narnia films.
Fox Studios isn’t exactly known for being great cultivator of quality film franchises, but there’s no word on whether or not the franchise will go through any major stylistic, cast, or crew changes now that’s being made by a new studio. Although, according the same article in Variety, it has been confirmed that Son of Rambow’s Michael Apted will be playing Eustice, the nephew of Lucy and Edmond who accompany them on their third journey to Narnia.

Y The Last Man Vol. 5In this final Deluxe Edition hardcover collecting Y #49-60, Yorick and Agent 355 prepare for their ultimate quest to reunite the last man with his lost love, while the person, people or thing behind the disaster that wiped out half of humanity is revealed. Then, Yorick Brown's long journey through an Earth populated only by women comes to its dramatic, unexpected conclusion.
You’re a bit mixed up there. Will Poulter will be playing Eustace. Not Michael Apted. Michael Apted is the director of the Dawn Treader.
oh and WOOHOO I love me some Narnia!
I enjoyed the first Narnia movie, and I thought that Prince Caspian was a step up in quality. I’m glad that the third film is still being made.
Just watched Prince Caspian and enjoyed it. i was sad to hear that Dawn Treader wasn’t being made. It’s my favorite of the books.
Good news
This happened very shortly after Disney ditched the movie. Very good news in my opinion, Prince Caspian was a solid movie.
Great! Now, I wish Fox was making The Subtle Knife. I loved the mythology of The Golden Compass.
I wish they were as well. The first one sucked. I need a new reason to finish the third book. The first movie killed off the progress I was making through the novels. :(
Now that I’ve finished all of them, I’m not really as interested in the movie, its weird but now that I know the whole story, I’m just not as into it anymore.
I never read the book, but I watched the movie. It definitely wasn’t great, but like I said, the universe was interesting. Was it the typical case where the book was really good, but the movie trashed the book?
We are talking about His Dark Materials now, right? I know Palaemon switched to The Subtle Knife, but I wasn’t aware Ben read that series. So just didn’t want to be discussing two different things.
To me, the book was really good, but the movie really, really, REALLY fast forwarded through the material. Imagine what Harry Potter would have been, if they refused to take out any material at all, but still had to fit the entire book into the same time frame.
There were probably a few things left out of the film version of The Golden Compass. But overall, it felt that they still crammed too much in for the time they were willing to give everything. They just didn’t seem to care about the soul of the material. It was almost like they were hoping to benefit from the buzz the movie would cause due to its contents, but didn’t actually want to take the time to examine any of that.
It’s a shame, I adored the actress they got for Lyra. The creatures were done fantastically. The actors were pretty top of the line. But the movie just felt wrong.
The books are a little hard to get through if you weren’t a child the first time you read them. The symbolism feels really heavy handed, there isn’t a ton of story and I know in my case, when you get to a certain age animals talking just doesn’t do it for you anymore.
Not to trash the books or anything (the only one I don’t like is the last one- but that has to do with my grown up issues) because I do love them I just think they’re a little hard to get into as an adult..
Oops. I was talking about Narnia- I didn’t realize the topic was His Dark Materials. Ignore me.
Actually, the talking animals didn’t really matter much to me. What annoyed me was more of the writing style. I had been spoiled by J.K. Rowling and George R.R. Martin’s style of writing where they explained everything. And I thought that this style of writing needlessly dumbed things down and glossed things over at times. Instead of telling you what someone said to the main character, the book may instead say, “Bob leaned over and whispered something to Lyra”. And that bothered me quite a bit. Either I’m seeing the book from that perspective, or I’m not.
However, once I got past what I saw as a writing style I didn’t enjoy (And that is totally something that probably wouldn’t bother too many people), I thought the story itself was fantastic. That’s why I was looking forward to the movies so much. The visual tool should have done the story more justice, IMO, than the novels did.
Ah, I wasn’t sure which you were talking about, Sunshineyness. They both have talking Animals. They are a lot less childish in His Dark Materials. :)
I like the books but I can see why it wont sale as good as the two 2 did
Since we’re on the topic, I happen to adore His Dark Materials. They’re second only to Harry Potter in my opnion.
I love Harry Potter too , so if it anything like that in the way it dark I think i will like it too
You see that button called “Reply”? Just curious. :P
Seriously though, I really loved the books when I was reading them. The writing annoyed me a bit, but other than that, they were fantastic. I wouldn’t put them in my top 3, probably, but likely in my top 5 or so. I really need to finish the third book.
PLEASE FOX – DO NOT SCREW UP THIS MOVIE. I have really high hopes i just dont want them to be squashed
My hopes that is !
