UPDATE: Joss Whedon To Direct The Avengers!
Tuesday, April 13th, 2010
The creator of Firefly and Buffy the Vampire Slayer is bringing Marvel’s super team to the big screen.
UPDATE: It was just reported that Marvel Studios is in final negotiations with Joss Whedon to helm The Avengers. Which means he’s essentially seconds from signing on.
Wow. I honestly didn’t think this was going to happen. I’m much more excited than I thought I’d be. What do you guys think?
Original Post:
Originally reported by IESB and then later confirmed by LA Times, Joss Whedon is Marvel Studios’ favorite pick for the director of The Avengers. Is this a geek dream come true? The only thing better (for me) would be a Whedon directed X-Men First Class, or if he got the reins of Marvel’s Runaways adaptation (which I guess he could even still do after The Avengers wrapped).
But it is important to note that the film will not be WRITTEN by Whedon, he would strictly be calling the shots behind the camera and nothing more. He’s only done this three times before to my recollection (two episodes of The Office and his upcoming episode of Glee), and never for a film. This would be an interesting experiment at the very least.
What do you think of the possibility of The Avengers being helmed by Joss Whedon? Let us know in the comments section below!

Book of the Month
Y The Last Man Vol. 5In this final Deluxe Edition hardcover collecting Y #49-60, Yorick and Agent 355 prepare for their ultimate quest to reunite the last man with his lost love, while the person, people or thing behind the disaster that wiped out half of humanity is revealed. Then, Yorick Brown's long journey through an Earth populated only by women comes to its dramatic, unexpected conclusion.
Whedon is good with ensemble casts, I’ll give him that. I’m a Marvel fanatic myself, so I like the idea.
However, I am assuming that this movie is going to require a good deal of highly kinetic, explosives heavy action scenes. I can’t recall examples of Whedon excelling in this particular aspect. Some Firefly/Serenity moments might be the exception. But I’m expecting an Avengers movie that is big time action on the scale of Iron Man or the Incredible Hulk.
Did Whedon not direct Serenity?
No, no, he did. And the space chase scene obviously stands out as the exception to the rule. I LOVE Whedon….I just hope Avengers is a good movie, but action heavy.
He did. But he also wrote that. He’s only directing something that he hasn’t written three times. That’s what I was saying.
I have complete faith in the man directing this movie, if he gtes it. He’s not let us down so far anyway to my recolection, this will only take the status as a “whedon fan” to a hire level. The Avengers is a big film after all and hopefully will do a lot for his career and take his name and fans to other projects. . . :)
Better him than Michael Bay
I think he’d do a good job, Avenger’s is an ensemble movie and ensemble stories are where he excels.
The official word is out and not only will Whedon be directing, but he will also be reworking Zak Penn’s script. This is going to be interesting to say the least…
Agreed. This should easily be the highest profile project Whedon has ever done. It will get a lot of attention from his fanbase and the mainstream as well. Hopefully Whedon knocks it out of the park.
*SQUEEE*
Does this mean Felicia Day or Summer Glau as the Scarlet Witch happens? Alan Tudyk as Vision?
Best tweet I’ve seen on this: If Whedon gets the Avengers, does that mean the movie is pulled after opening night?
I loved him with X-Men. I feel he’ll make the team work, but I am still a little cautious. I was hoping for JJ Abrams but that was a dreamshot.
WOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!
This will be really good for his career. Best of luck to him, hope he shows the film for what it can be. Have absolute faith that he will. This is going to be very interesting to see this develop, would not have guessed his name to be even involved, this is going to be a big film for many Avenger and Whedon Fans! :)
