Captain America casting down to six!
Wednesday, February 24th, 2010
Been waiting patiently to find out who would be cast as Steve Rogers in Marvel’s The First Avenger: Captain America? Well, you’ll have to keep waiting… but the list is narrowed down to six actors. The list and pictures after the break.
There have been a lot of rumored casting going around lately, which can always be assumed to happen as a comic book film’s production begins to approach, but in the case of Captain America, most of those rumors didn’t seem entirely out of question (not counting the Will Smith rumor from a couple years ago…). From Chris Pine (Star Trek) to Jensen Ackles (Supernatural) to Ryan “Captain Awesome” McPartlin (Chuck), every rumor seemed to fit the role rather well. Now, its been revealed that Marvel Studios has their list of shield-wielding hopefulls:
John Krasinski (The Office, Leatherheads)
I love John Krasinski, I really do. I love Jim Halpert. I’m even pretty fond of Leatherheads, and can see the connection that the Marvel Studio execs are obviously making. But seriously, Captain America?! I’ve always said that if they ever wanted to make a 30-something Spider-Man flick, with Peter Parker as a high school teacher, Krasinski is their guy. But he’s just not right for Cap.
Chace Crawford (Gossip Girl)
Consistently the least interesting part of Gossip Girl (I know, I know “There’s interesting parts of Gossip Girl?!” If that’s your reaction, it should really put into perspective how yawn-inducing Crawford’s character Nate Archibald must be), I see it physically, but I don’t buy him as a leader. I’ve never seen him display the acting chops I would deem necessary for the role. Besides, the guy’s next movie is a remake of Footloose… a guy’s gotta eat but I really don’t want to see Cap teaching a town to dance.
Michael Cassidy (Smallville, The OC)
On The OC, Michael Cassidy played Zach Stevens, one of the “new kids” introduced onto the show in season two (and then subsequently written off by the end of the season). His character was kind of a dumb but likable, “aw shucks” kind of a guy, but again, I just don’t get it. Sure, if he bulked up and squared that jaw, I could see him in the role physically, but his voice isn’t demanding and leader-y enough for me. He went on to play the new editor of the Daily Planet on Smallville’s seventh season, but I never bought him as the boss. Every time he gave orders to Chloe or Lois, it felt weird, unnatural, and totally took me out of it. If he can’t convince me he can run a newspaper, how the hell would he be able to carry the presence necessary for Captain America?
Mike Vogel (Cloverfield, 2003’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre)
Better. Closer. Warmer. He’s definitely got a look close enough to Steve Rogers (Only complaint would be that he’s just a bit too… “pretty”). The problem however is that while I’ve seen him in both movies listed above, I can barely remember him in either. Does that mean that I just didn’t find his performances that memorable? That’s not good when he’s supposed to be playing one of the most recognizable characters in comic history. Of course this curse could also be a blessing, it would definitely give him an “unknown” air to him, which would allow him to really dive headfirst into the role. Besides, once he plays Cap, people will definitely remember him. Consider Vogel my tentative number 2.
Patrick Flueger (The 4400)
I’ve never watched The 4400, and looking over his IMDB, I don’t think I’m familiar with anything he’s done at all. He’s got the look however, but I can’t give my approval unless I see something he’s done. But I guarantee you this: If Patrick Flueger gets the job, The 4400 will instantly be added to my netflix que.
Scott Porter (Friday Night Lights, Caprica)
My number 1 choice by a mile, Scott Porter would be an awesome Captain America. I haven’t had a chance to catch Caprica yet, but from the little bit of Friday Night Lights I’ve seen so far, I think he’d be great. He’s got troop-rallying leadership down. He’s absolutely got the all-american midwest vibe going for him. He should be a shoe-in for the role. Of course, this almost guarantees he won’t get it, but lets hope for the best.
Well, that’s what I think. What about you guys? Let us know in the comments section!

Eh. Maybe they know something I don’t about some of these guys. But what’s up with all the uninspired casting choices? First we hear about Chad Michael Murray? Then these guys? Who’s teenage daughter is hanging out in the casting offices? Chace Crawford? Seriously?
I hated Scott Porter’s run on FNL. He’s a great actor, but I’m not sold on him as Cap. I have liked what I’ve seen of him on Caprica so far though. I’m sure they could work with him, I just don’t necessarily like the idea.
If I had to pick someone from this list, it would be Mike Vogel. At least he looks the role. Still, I’m not really sold on the idea of any of these guys. But I’ll be the first to admit I’m wrong if one of them happens to pull it out and win the role and turns out to be really good.
But I won’t be holding my breath, considering that “they were down to two people” a couple weeks ago and neither of those two are on this list.
I dont like this casting rumors but I hopeing It still be great
The only things this list of actors inspires in me is first a great, big yawn followed by a “What are they thinking?”. There are a million actors out there that are better for this role, even if we restrict it to lesser-known ones. I hope that this entire list is wrong, but I doubt we’ll get that lucky.
I don’t mind Krasinski, but I agree, Porter is the best choice.
My cousin is in the 4400, that should be reason enough to watch it, but I just haven’t.
I vote for using a time machine and forcing Joel McCrea circa 1935 to do it. Seriously, google image.
In all seriousness, honestly, do we HAVE American actors left anymore who are all-American imposing square jawed guys? I can’t even think of a dude in the age bracket who I think even has the look let alone the acting ability.
Seriously, at this point I’d be all right if they got an Australian or something to play the part. The lack of this physical type of American actor is amazing to me.
Originally the word was that Ryan McPartlin was one of the last two standing in the casting decision (Him and Chad Michael Murray….*shudder*). At first I thought that choice seemed a little bit uninspired. But to me, that’s because of the Captain Awesome vs Captain America connection. Seemed like a fan’s dream or something. But at least it seemed like a good match.
He’s definitely got the square jaw thing down.
All these comments about the casting choices remind me about when Heath Ledger was picked as the Joker.
Ledger was an odd choice for the Joker, given his body of work. But he had been in quite a few excellent films. Most of the spite over his casting came because of Brokeback Mountain. Even then, it was a critically praised role. His previous roles didn’t SEEM completely detached from those before it.
These guys just feel like uninspired choices. They don’t have the controversial feel of Ledger. Other than Scott Porter’s FNL run, I’m not even sure how many critically acclaimed works they have between them. It feels like they picked a few “hot actors” solely based on the popularity they have with the teenage crowd. At least for the most part.
Two me, the uproar seems similar to Ledger, sure, but for completely different reasons. Ledger’s casting was just bizarre to most people. These actors just seem….wrong. But like I said, I’ll be the first to admit I’m wrong if one of them turns out to get the job and does a great job with it.
I wouldn’t really have a problem with any one of these guys being on the list. The problem comes in if this is their entire list. Like I said, it looks like the casting director let his 14 year old daughter draw up the list.
BTW, WTF? This is like the first time you’ve commented in 2 years or so. Random. :P
The only thing I’ve seen Scott Porter in was Bandslam, it had mild critical acclaim that was overshadowed by the film starring Vanessa Hudgens.
