Buffy movie moving forward?
Tuesday, May 26th, 2009
Don’t get too excited. It looks like “the powers that be” have decided that Buffy needs a new re-launch. So plans are moving forward to do a potentially Joss-less Buffy movie that has no connection to either of the two previous Buffy projects. Keep reading.
From IGN:
A new film version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer could be set to hit the big screen, in a reboot of the franchise for a new generation.
However, chances are that character creator Joss Whedon won’t be involved, with the new film having no connection to the 1992 film or 1997 TV show of the same name aside from the fact that it revolves around a young vampire slayer.

hahahahahahaha
Okay, I want to judt say some things right off the bat, before the Whedon Cult tears this apart.
First, this is such a weird, ballsy move that I actually have to support it. The idea of just telling a story about the next generation’s Slayer, could be very, very badass in the right hands. And doing a relaunch, without the baggage of seven seasons and God-knows how many comic books, is I think the best idea. The only people who would be happy with the continung saga of the Scoobies are the Whedonites, but the potential to tell an all-new horror comedy tale has almost limitless potiential.
Get a badass writer, an imagnitive director and a leadling lady we can all believe in, and I will gladly buy my ticket, even if I have to fight through legions of grumpy “Whedon is My Master Now” t-shirt wearing fanboys to do it.
Actually, I couldn’t care less if Joss is involved. I doubt the success of it without him, but I don’t blame them for trying. And in principle, I don’t dislike the idea of doing a new movie. And it’s virtually impossible to tie it in to continuity and do the film they would want. It’s just the fact that “relaunch” sounds like they want to do more than just a movie. And since it’s only been 6 years since it went off the air, I think it’s a little early to re-invent it for a third time.
I’ll be interested in seeing where this all goes. However, I’ve got to say from the start that I don’t like the basic idea of Buffy. The whole “High school girl turned vampire slayer” is not an appealing storyline for me, and I think 9 times out of 10 we will get a movie more like 1992 Buffy, and less like 1997 Buffy. It’s so easy to fall into high school student cliches, and miss a lot of the great potential that Joss brought out.
However, the fact that they say that they want to make a darker Buffy has me thinking that they might be heading in the right direction with the story. So basically, with all the positive and negative attachments that I have with the story in all it’s history, a re-launch would sit right at square one for me. I would pay attention to it, but it would still have to prove to be an interesting take on it before I would go watch it.
So… they want to make a movie about a girl who slays vampires?
I really don’t know why they need to bring Buffy into this. I’ve read many books since Buffy that use the same concept that are completely unrelated to that world.
They basically want to use the premise and call it a “re-launch” so people don’t go all “that’s a rip-off!” Am I right?
Whatevsies. I’m so tired of vampires right now, (I should be totally excited about L. Smith’s “Vampire Diaries” getting made but I can’t muster up the interest even for THAT. Nor can I bring myself to try the Sookie Stackhouse books, or watch the show) that even cool ones where they actually KILL THEM are starting to wear thin on me…
I think we need about a few years without vampires for the sake of the genre…
“They basically want to use the premise and call it a “re-launch” so people don’t go all “that’s a rip-off!” Am I right?”
I think you’re totally right.
Oddly enough, I’m not burnt out on Vampires. Though I am a bit burnt out on everyone having a different take. I think that if this project moves forward, then they should at least inherit Joss’ rules for Vampires. You don’t have to keep anything else, but I really hope they keep that.
With all that said, I don’t think anyone would scream “rip-off” if they used an obvious name structure like “Anna the Vampire Slayer” or something similar. Those of us that would care would recognize that it’s a departure, and not a rip-off. Meanwhile the other 95% of the population wouldn’t get the connection anyway. :P
But…but… No Joss?
Personally Id’ be disappointed if JW returned to this well. Go do something new.
Technically he has returned to Buffy – Buffy Season 8 comics.
well he should quit that then.
He is doing something new…. Dollhouse ;)
Yes, Dollhouse is something new. He should do more of that less Buffy Remakes.
Fran Rubel Kuzui is making it. I would say rip-off is the wrong term because this is going to be made by the same people who made the original. Fran Rubel Kuzui still owns the rights to the story (which is why her name is on every buffy episode) she was more or less letting the show use the characters. I would say the remake is because she already owns the story now wants to cash in a second time and hopefully make some money this time since the show did so well.
I would like to see this done and have them stick to the original script this time, at least in tone. they know now that Joss was right so maybe they can do a good job.
I think it would be funny if it was huge if only to piss off SMG. after years of turning her back on the franchise it would be ironic if it was the hit movie she missed out on.
I’m all for reboots… and so are quite a bit of the Whedon fandom.
The problem for me is not the reboot. The problem is WHO is doing the reboot. This isn’t like JJ coming into Star Trek. This is like hiring the team that created that one crappy movie that wasn’t a success, and that guy who does half-way decent Japanese horror remakes to make a film that’ not like the series at all.
Hopefully Kuzui will hire a crack team of filmmakers and let them do their job.
amen to that! thats what they didn’t do last time.
Maybe they will take it serious having learned a lesson last time.
…but probably not. History isn’t in their favor. We’ll see though.
You don’t want to be the person that follows a legend. You want to be the person that follows the person that followed a legend. Perception is everything.
Alright, so who do you guys think would do a good job at handeling a Buffy reboot? Personally, I think someone like Sam Raimi or Edgar Wright could do a good job, someone that knows the horror genre front and back and would be able to play with conventions.
George Lucas! Sorry, I just had a lobotomy.
I like the Edgar Wright idea alot
As long as pee wee herman reprises his role I have no problem. Otherwise there will be hell to pay.
…..my god………thats BRILLIANT!!!!!!
I’m kinda neutral on this. There is nothing wrong with a Buffy “reboot” but there isn’t anything that screams “Great!” to me that makes me jump on the bandwagon for this. I’m going to take the old wait and see approach.
I could care less about this, as much as i really liked the show, its not like its going away.
Remember, the show itself is technically a remake of the first movie, and that worked out pretty well.
Yeah, that’s kind of the point. The original movie was a very hands on project by the Kazui’s. The TV show was almost entirely taken out of their hands, and placed in Joss’. So the question becomes, how much control are they willing to give up for this project to become legitimate? Because I really have no interest in watching a Buffy movie like the 1992 one.
Hmmmm….I’ll have to wait and see what they actually do with it, but I’m certainly skeptical at this point.
Joss Whedon’s take on a Buffy reboot: “I hope it’s cool.”
I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand it would be great if the makers could recapture the essence of the old program. However, that would be so difficult to achieve that it is almost doomed to fail. At the same time the original cast is either into other things (i.e. Boreanz, Hannigan) or too old to pul it off.
I think the original cast being associated is even less likely than Joss.
I agree. Too much time has passed.
Don’t worry, I’m sure Luke Perry will find time in his scheduel.
I’ve begun work on my BUFFY REBOOT SCRIPT. I decided to write it for fun after hearing the news. I’ll post it on the site soon
And Scott should post his superman script.
WOW. Flashback…
Maybe one of the story lines could be whatever happened to Scott Hope. I long for closure.
In Season 7’s “Conversations with Dead People”, Holden told Buffy that after she broke up with Scott, he went around telling everyone at school it was because she was gay. The irony of it was that Scott Hope ended up becoming gay a few years later.
Overall I’m okay with this…for now… But my biggest problem would be the “Twilight” thing. If someone made it an actual Buffy-verse and style I think there’s some interesting potential there (no pun intended), but if someone tries to make it fit the Twilight style mode it would be a catastrophe.
Oh, James Gunn. I think he could do a good job with this as well. Or maybe Matt Reeves…
Hey guys, I finished the first draft of the script today! It clocks in at about 129 pages! I’ll see how quickly I can let you guys read it
That’s pretty impressive dude. I’d like to read it. How long did it take?
I guess from May 31st to June 14th. That’s…15 days
I find your speed to be depressing. When are you gonna post it? Feel free to just email it too me.
Sure man, just gmail me your address or something
I assumed you had access to it via wp.

well as long as it not like the 80’s movie , I think this could be a good thing , it will be sad to see as beloved 90’s slayer RIP but having a new slayer is better then having nothing and who know we could grow to love it more then the 90’s TV show
honestly i have to say that i rather not see a joss-less buffy, the show holds so much more power compared to the movie. Its a damn shame that they are pushing for this, especially with the outbreak of several vampire movies and television shows now, it will just fall into the another vampire movie category.
Although, since they are going on with this, i will not object to seeing it, i am semi interested in their take on this. It will be just sad to not see our scoobies anymore
