Billy Bob Krueger?
Monday, August 11th, 2008
JoeBlo is reporting an interesting rumor:
As we all know, Micheal Bay’s Platinum Dunes production company (responsible for 2003’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre, 2005’s Amityville Horror, and 2009’s upcoming Friday the Thirteenth) is planning on remaking Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street. With the remake, the franchise would not only get a bigger budget but also a new cast. This includes a replacing the original (and at this point ONLY) Freddy Krueger, Robert Englund.
Well, according to Englund, while promoting his new film Jack Brooks, Monster Slayer on the radioshow Loveline, Billy Bob Thornton may be slipping into that famous striped sweater for the Nightmare reboot.
This may seem unbelieveable to some, but Billy Bob has a history of not being above this grade of film (Mr. Woodcock or Bad News Bears remake anyone?). Plus, he’s worked with Michael Bay in the past (Armageddon).
I’ll be taking this with a grain of salt for now, but it doesn’t seem out of the question…

Well, I love BBT (and Bad News Bears was great), but I don’t like this idea, it’s a film that I think will lose its charm in this day and age and can we get a better Krueger than England? At the moment I don’t think we can, so far what I have seen from platinum dunes has not impressed me, I’m not looking forward to this at all.
There was a rumor that Ben-my pick for Joker 2.0- Foster was the running as well. But if BBT was cast as Krueger it would defintely peek my interest for this remake.
I don’t know if he can pull off the creepiness.. Plus I am sure since its a remake they will show way too much of Freddy. The reason why Nightmare and the first Child’s Play worked was because until near the end they were always on the edge of the screen, shadows, and etc. No one can pull that kind of horror off anymore. We are gonna end up with a Saw rip-off based around a child molester. I have no hopes for this or any other re-makes.
I think it would be a lot better if they cast an unknown as Freddy. I’m sure there is a lot of unseen talent out there who could pull it off.
There is no need at all to replace Englund. If they replace him, I’m goinng to be pissed!!!
I like the Nightmare movies, and I think that nobody can play Freddy as well as Robert Englund. However, if there is absolutely no chance of Englund reprising his role, I think they could do a whole lot worse than Billy Bob. I actually think he could do a pretty good job as Freddy, but it just wouldn’t be the same.
My two favorite classic “slasher” franchises were Halloween and Nightmare on Elm St. ANd I honestly liked the Halloween remake (the director’s cut, not the theatrical) but… I dunno man, Nightmare is amazing as it is. *Shrug* At this point anything that breathes new life into the franchise is all right with me. But in my mind the New Nightmare is/was/and always shall be Elm Street’s swan song. Such an awesome little movie.
@Sunshineyness: Totally agreed on New Nightmare.
I have heard that Englund has no interest in reprising the role, or even doing a cameo. As much as I think BBT might be able to pull it off, it will never have the creepiness/campiness of the original. You just can’t pull that off these days.
I’d like to see something out of Hollywood we haven’t seen in a while: originality. Are we really out of fresh ideas?
It seems that all of the original horror ideas nowadays are all torture porn. We’ll get better stuff eventually I’m sure, nut right now remakes and torture porn is all there is. And I don’t know about you, but give me a remake over that garbage any day of the week. At least a remake has a CHANCE of being good.
I’m just going to go ahead and say it: I DO NOT want Robert England back as Freddy. He has picked up too many bad habits playing the role for so long and he isn’t remotely scary. I think you guys are all remembering Robert in the original Nightmare. Where, you’re damn right he was creepy as hell. But every movie after that, he’s like a cartoon character. Not scary.
Now, that’s not to say that I want BBT either. I don’t. He absolutely refuses to get rid of his stupid hick accent, regardless of how out of place it is in the role he playing. That stupid accent has no place in the role of Freddy Krueger. I wouldn’t be able to take him seriously at all.
I really like Ben Foster for the role. I think he’s a very underrated actor who could absolutely go to town with this role. I also think getting someone like Doug Jones wouldn’t be a bad idea. The guy has played EVERYTHING, and obviously isn’t against a metric ton of makeup and prosthetics (plus he played the lead Gentleman from Hush. You can’t tell me that’s not creepy).
@ “t seems that all of the original horror ideas nowadays are all torture porn.”
Korea and France. I’m tellin’ you.
Oooh, Doug Jones! Nice.
BBT is pretty creepy when not acting, totally fits the “creepy uncle” stereotype. With all the horror remakes we’ve seen in the last few years, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in this role. I can’t say, however, that it will be any good. Hopefully they will have learned from their mistakes and make this one actually unique and good. I don’t want to see elements from The Ring in this movie though. Every horror movie has it’s own way of being scary and yes, The Ring was scary, but please stop making little girls with black hair pop up in every freaking movie! All of the remakes so far have just been the kind of thing you bring a date to just so she’ll jump in your arms. Nothing has had any kind of lasting appeal. I have no hope for this movie, if it’s actually being made.
I LOVE THIS IDEA BBT IS GREAT TOTALLY LOVE HIM. I WOULD SEE ANYTHING HE IS IN.I REALLY HOPE HE DOES THIS ROLE REALLY INTERSTING.. LOVE U BILLY
i think bbt would make an excellent freddy kruger, robert england is the best but old, maybe a cameo in the film would be better fit for him. bbt would bring in crowds and he fits the kruger profile, skinny tall, and i bet that you wont find a better actor, lets face it horror movies are not known for there actors. maybe if they get a few more actors that are popular the movie would be an instant success
