Academy Awards Expand Number of Best Picture Nominess to 10
Sunday, June 28th, 2009
The Academy of Motion Pciture Arts and Sciences have expanded the number of films that can be nominated for Best Picture to 10.
I’m really excited about this. A LOT pf people were dissapointed with last year’s Oscars for leaving out films like The Wrestler, Revolutionary Road and particulary The Dark Knight. Now that the number of films that can be nominated have doubled, what does this mean? Will critcally lauded popcorn fair like Star Trek have a chance to wedge itself alongside arthouse picks? What about movies like July’s Public Enemies and August’s Julie and Julia? Very interesting stuff, folks

I don’t know, I think this is less about giving pictures their due and more about advertising dollars check this out to see what I mean: http://www.newsy.com/videos/oscars_and_then_there_were_ten
I think this could hurt the award if spare movies start to get nominated. But then again every year I find myself saying ” I think x movie should have been nominated…”
Expanding it to ten nominees will probably do nothing to change the quality of what gets nominated…there will just be more of them. There will always be movies left out that most people think should have been included. It happens every year, and it will continue to happen, despite having more nomination slots.
True, but by the end of the year people’s Top 10 Lists tend to look the same. Theoritcally, a critc’s entire Best of the Year list could be nominated for Best Picture. Again, its still summer and most award-season movies don’t open until the Fall, so I guess it won’t be until then that anyone can start predicting Oscar noms.
hooray, perhaps In The Loop could get nominated!
